This donation thing from the Second Mile would change my opinion dramatically, but up until now, I see it as totally possible that Paterno was that far out of the loop. Joe was not on the front line, and it is entirely possible huge chunks of info bypassed him. Larry Johnson was talking about his time at PSU, and he said that he almost never saw Paterno beside on gamedays where he would yell random sounds and the position coach would translate if it was directed at him (it should be noted that the point of the story was to do an impression of JoePa, but the message remains). The guy is/ has been ancient, and I've thought for a long time that he was a talking head who was used to recruit and march out there on gamedays while all of his underlings did the football work. I don't think he reports what McQueary tells him to anyone if he's trying to cover up for Sandusky.

My understanding was also that Paterno reported the rape when he was told. The campus police opened an investigation, but it closed shortly thereafter (more than likely with influence from someone higher up) with no results. Sandusky was a bit of a big name himself, it's entirely possible a police chief doesn't want to incriminate an old ball coach. JoePa probably should have followed up, but Sandusky and his 'charity' were exiled (lamely to another state u campus). Frankly, I would have tried to block out the weeks of my life where I processed the fact that my right hand man banged innocent 10-year olds for fear of never sleeping again.

I haven't seen any of the transcripts some reference though. I've just been hearing reports and reading articles about it. If Paterno did maintain contact with Sandusky, knew about all of this, and, god forbid, took donations from the Second Mile, he should absolutely be met by a mob equipped with pitchforks and torches. However, I'm fairly confident that Paterno hasn't been coherent for 15 years. At one point, I thought he was dead and being wheeled around on a dolley by execs at PSU who don't want to lose their only taste of relevance.

This scandal will come down to two words: Who knew?

He's made a lot of clever maneouvers lately to retain his legacy for someone who hasn't been coherent in 15 years.

I was reading some of the coverage this AM and came across this poignant piece, written by a writer who grew up in the insular world that was State College, that deals less with the gory details of the scandal than the fallout in the face of proof that sooner or later absolute power absolutely corrupts. I don't have much empathy for McQueary in all of this. I guess you could say he half ass did the right thing, although I can't imagine a 28 year old graduate assistant studying for his Masters in Education witnessing what he did and failing to do the truly right thing for any reason other than fear of what that might cost him...a shot a being Joe one day... Self preservation is a pretty powerful emotion too, whether what you are trying to preserve is your innocence or your core belief in the goodness of others or your surroundings or just your damn career prospects... Hindsight is always 20-20.

Michael Weinreb on Joe Paterno, Jerry Sandusky, and dealing with the controversy at Penn State - Grantland

I grew up in a small bedroom community where the parish church and schools it spawned while not on the same level as PSU weilded tremendous power and influence and set the tone and ruled the town roost for decades. It remainded essentially that above the fray enclave for decades because that power deemed that was in it's and our best interest. Although few of us next generationers could afford to continue to live there into our adulthood as a result and it has more recently become a happening suburban upscale yuppie newcomers destination location with some of the most stable upscale RE prices and best walking distance ethnic dining in metro west (although never a Mickey D's or the like and dry as a bone until recently...). Did have it's pedophile priest debaucle 25 years ago, but it was of course hushed up because the generation that had bought all in couldn't deal with that kind of upsetting discussion. I know when I was growing up if a kid had an issue with a nun or a priest or most any authority figure, you ended up on the short end of the stick. I've always believed - and at one time opined - that a couple of my young male cousins who had issues in their early teens that seemed to derail them for at least a time might have had first hand experience in their alter boy phase under his watch... But their parents never considered even going there because I guess it was easier to just think of yourself as a potential parental failure or just blame their behavior and issues on the times...

So I guess maybe this is middle America's welcome to the real world moment, just a couple of decades past the rest of us coastal dwellers. No more clinging to that naive belief that somehow you were insular and immune to it. In my mother's day nearly a century ago and close to Joe's generation, it was never openly discussed or acknowledged, although certain bastards did tend to disappear from a neighborhood rather unceremoneously. Self preservation at work there, too though. Because anything more would have meant you had to you know...acknowledge and talk about it.

Jo Pa has defintaley been a puppet for years. if he did know he should be punished. Sandusky should either promptly kill himself or let the state kill him sick effin bastard.

You don't know if you would ??? WTF ???

A legal activity that Roger didn't like vs. the second worst crime (second to murder) that can be committed.

Mike McQueary should be going to jail, he SAW anal i(you finish it off) and did nothing other than tell Daddy the next day a decade ago. And he will be on the sidelines on Saturday.

Penn State should burn in hell.

All McQueary had to do is break it up, call the police and call the kids parents. Ideally you'd beat Sandusky to a bloody pulp then call the police.

McQueary is scum of the earth, it'd be worth getting thrown off the team and out of school to knock that cowards teeth in.

Everyone that knew is guilty of aiding and abetting, scum.

It's all speculation, so I can't discredit 'he said, she said' at the moment. so...Per a poster on another board who claims to be a PSU booster:

In 1998 the University Park PD investigated allegations that he had fondled a young boy, turned everything they had over to the DA, and the DA did not prosecute. The investigation was sealed, and Joe Paterno and other administrators had no idea what happened, other than that he was investigated for some issue. Even with that little information, Joe Paterno told Sandusky that he would not become the coach at Penn State, and there are rumors he stopped him from getting the job at UVa. What transpired is that Sanduskey negotiated a retirement with Penn State brass that included Coach Emeritus status, that gave him free reign of Campus.

In 1998, Mike McQuery walked into the locker room, heard noises in the locker room, and saw Sanduskey behind a boy in the shower, both naked - for an instant and then ran. Next morning he talked Joe Paterno and relayed to him he thought he saw something strange, possibly of a sexual nature, happen in the locker room between Sandusky and a boy. Paterno immediately told Curley, and Curley and Schultz - who administers the Campus Police Department - came and interviewed Paterno to ask what happened. Joe relayed what he was told "fondling or something of a sexual nature" to them. From Joe Paterno's point of view, he not only told his superior, he also told the head of a police department. He had reasonable expectations the police would invesitgate the matter fully.

A week later Curley and Schultz interviewed Mcquery on what he saw. He told them he saw what he believed to be anal rape. They said they'd investigate. Again, from McQuery's point of view, he has reasonable belief that by telling Schultz, he's telling the police. A while later they call him (McQuery) back, telling him they reported to the Second mile and took away Sandusky's locker room keys. That's where the GJ stops." END QUOTE

I read the report, it specifically stated McQueary witnessed a sexual act. he's a low life coward, end of story.

link below has an article including grand jury report.

Joe wasn't ever out of the loop at Penn State. Joe was the loop.

I'm a huge Patriots fan, but also a PSU alum, staff member and season ticket holder. Two major scandals involving the two programs I love the most in 5 years. This is just depressing. Please pray first and foremost for the victims of these crimes. My mind keeps going back and forth between anger, disgust to betrayal. I want to believe that JoePa did the right thing, but I don't know if I can do so until all of the facts come out. And even then I think I will have a hard time doing so. Remeber that it was not to long ago that BB was vilified by the media for the whole SpyGate mess.

I think what the students did last night was stupid. They had every right to protest, but it should have never turned destructive. That paints all students and others in the PSU community in a negative light.

It's going to take a long time to heal from this, and I hope that PSU can at some point recover from this tragedy.

Read the 23 page Grand Jury testimony and you will have no doubt that he did not. And not only did he not do the right thing, he allowed that sick bastard to remain a part of the program and to continue taking young boys on road trips paid for by the team and stay in his hotel room both on the road and the night before home games.

And McQueery needs to be hung that weak POS! How the hell does he still have a job? unreal!

I could go on a rant, but lots of people looked the other way and did nothing while they helped to facilitate his rapes....**** Penn State! That football program needs the death penalty. Allow the players to transfer to other schools without the waiting period and disolve the football team and start over a few years from now with a whole new coaching staff!

Disgusting!

Hey, somebody help me out with this one: when does child molestation start getting fun?

F*** JoePa and F*** Penn State.

This needs to be moved from the main forum.

I strongly agree. Anyone that has doubt should read the grand jury report.

Many should be fired. Many should go to jail. Many, include Penn State should be sued for many millions. And yes, the Penn State athletic program should get the maximum penalty allowed with NCAA rules.

This will change the modus operandi for all NCAA teams, how they recruit and how they treat all visitors..

It is much bigger than Penn State, it will shake the foundation of that which is very familiar to us...

Cannot for the life of me understand why 10 year olds were allowed to be in this situation without a parent?? It is a diddler's paradise.

Cannot for the life of me understand why Sandusky is now home with his 6 adopted children??

Cannot for the life of me understand why Penn State was so slow to react?? Their lack of action has made this so much worse than it really is.. they will be paying our millions for the next 20 years, it makes Geoghan look like an altar boy.

The only people making a big enough deal about this story are two guys I typically can't stand - and that's Felger & Callahan. But they are the only ones truly hammering home the scope of the atrocities here.

I'm so sick of hearing about Paterno's legacy, or Penn State football - that's just the backdrop of this story, and too many people are focusing on that backdrop and losing sight of the horror of what occurred.

There isn't a worse crime than rape or sexual assault. You are destroying that person's life going forward. The victim will never truly be whole again, and they have to live with that event for the rest of their life. There is no escaping it - the life of the abused victim is forever changed and irreparably damaged.

And all these people at Penn State stood around and let this rapist do this? Heck, they enabled him! It's mind-boggling. They should all be in prison, including Joe P. Keep in mind: whatever number comes forward revealing Sandusky abused them, there's likely several times more that isn't going to come forward, but were abused nonetheless.

If the negligence he - and everyone else involved - showed in allowing a serial rapist ruin the lives of child after child isn't illegal, then the laws should be changed so it is.

NO WAY

This is the most Interesting, disturbing and phucked up thing that has happened in Football in years

This is Joe Pa and it deserves its place here.

If Tom Brady hair threads and polls are allowed here... and Giselle's income/worth vs. Brady's $$$ worth [and is Tom Brady Balding?]

then this is most certainly suitable material for the BIG Board:rocker:

And how many more have been raped by Sandusky since 2002 when the situation wasn't dealt with in 2002?

Feel no remorse for Paterno at all ... the kids deserved better and who gives a crap how Joe was informed - he should have been informed by a person who should have handed him the note and then knocked him the frig out. Paterno hid for years behind the veil of someone who always did the right thing - that persona enabled evil. Like I said screw JoePa ... could care less if he chokes on his dentures tonight.
