Re: Schefter: Butler released

BB's cuts have been brutal this season.

Re: Schefter: Butler released

Right!

That Maroney is a dancer. Can't stand him!
Oh, right, they did, Denver.

Fred Taylor is always injured.
Really? A one-day contract?

Moss is totally dogging it.
Of course, right, Minny.

Brandon Tate totally cannot run a route. And what's he doing coming out seven yards deep with the defenders already at the five?
Already? Cincinnati?

Ty Warren just let that contract go to his head -- and his stomach.
Denver too. Huh.

Have you ever seen a more sorry bunch of high draft choices than Wheatley, Butler, and Wilhite? They each give a ten-yard cushion! I could go out there and give a ten-yard cushion. Two seconds and a fourth? Total waste!
All three of them? So, wait, who is left to complain about?

Ah, Cunningham!
We better see more than one sack, young man.

The fellowship of the miserable really lost their binkies this season.

Isn't that why they have Offensive Coordinators? If you can't call a better game from your couch you're not part of the fellowship.

No way........ Brace is next up on the "hate train". Book it now.
Brace probably won't even play another game. Probably will be IR'd then cut next year.

I submit that the Patriots remain a perennial contender BECAUSE they are willing to cut high draft picks – not in spite of it.

Other coachers or GMs are prone to clog the roster with someone like Vernon Gholston to save face.

Belichick knows the NFL draft is a total crapshoot. Sometimes you have a bumper crop – sometimes they’re all busts – usually its a combination – for all teams.

But not every team has Belichick’s inclination to put pride and ego aside and give a roster spot to an undrafted rookie who earned the spot rather than a former 1st or 2nd round pick

The tribe has spoken Darius, and the fat lady is warming up....Can't say as tho I am surprised.....it was like Tate....why was the guy still here?! Wish him well in his future endeavors.

Good ole Twitter.

I watched DB from day 1 at UConn and I'll tell you that the problems he had here, he had there. He struggled to make a play on the ball when he had to turn and run with the wr.

I was, and still will be, a fan of his because of who he is as a person, not just a football player. I'm sorry it did not work out for him in NE and wish him well.

Re: Schefter: Butler released

Pioli and BB both seem to have had excellent drafts last year, and both have drafts with potential from this year.

For some reasons, 2006-2009 don't measure up to the bookend seasons. Some of it's explainable (2007), but the fans still deserve an explanation that they won't get short of a book being written.

When people talk about drafts they expect every pick to hit. You need to compare the drafts to other teams in their position did. Not pick out one player they missed on or comparing them to a team with a top ten pick.
Look at the elite AFC teams in 2009.

Patriots 2 starters (Chung, Volmer)

Ravens 1 starter (Oher)

Steelers 3 starters (Hood, Wallace, Summers)

Chargers 2 starters (English, Vasquez)

Colts 2 starters (Powers, Collie)

2009 was not a bad draft.

I was excited when he first came here and he did show burst of promise. But time showed he couldn't string it all together and play consistently at a high enough level. Still kinda sad that he didn't develop enough because he seems like nice person, the kind I root for to make it big.

I wish him luck wherever he goes.

Several ways of approaching this draft problem.

Historical parallel: Chuck Noll early 80s. Noll had been such a drafting genius throughout his tenure when he started to stumble it took onlookers about 5 years to realize the Steeler dynasty talent was not being replenished. He made blunder after blunder. He never regained his magic, with a few exceptions like Louis Lipps.

BB analysis: BB is recognizing his errors, not denying them like Noll did. That is a positive development, and indicates the potential for a drafting renaissance, supported by limited evidence from draftee performances in 2010.

As for the root reason for these draft errors, the problem may not be entirely related to the talent drafted, but the quality of coaching draftees are receiving. I do not mean they are deprived of information, I am speaking about the leadership ability of the extended coaching staff.

The principle decline for the Pats these past 5 years has been the coaching talent drain. Coaches such as Romeo, Charlie et al are invaluable leaders, and cannot be easily replaced. They are mentors, motivators, and tacticians, and influence every player with whom they come in contact. On a day to day basis they helped mold young men into mature, game ready warriors.

There is no shame in stating that their successors have not measured up from a talent development standpoint.

If we open our eyes and look closely at the debacle that occurred last playoffs, we will observe that our team was outcoached. If we match up the Jets current coaching staff with our coaching staff, man for man, an argument can be made the only position we dominate is Head coach. The Jets have Bill Callahan, Tom Moore, and Mike Westhoff on staff, 3 superior coaches. Ryan has to do is bluster to the media and motivate his defense, which is what he should be doing, that is his talent.

The principle area where we need improvement is in the coaching staff and player development. Hopefully the sting of last season was educational not just for our players but for the young bucks on the staff as well, who have matured as coaches. If so, the sky is the limit for this club this season, and championship predictions are justified.

Best of luck to Darius. Seems like a good guy and great athlete.

I didn't say it was a bad draft (it's too early to tell and Pryor/Edelman/Brace are also players with some level of promise and still on the team), but it's losing its luster. What many looked at as a stocked draft haul for the Patriots is now looking far less impressive, some of the misses involved passing over players that, IMO, pretty clearly should have been chosen over the miss (Butler over Smith comes immediately to mind), and the trade of the Matthews pick looms large.

Probably shoulda taken Freeman but not a bad draft. What's up with Kyle Wilson is he looking like a bust?

I don't know if I'd toot my horn about Slauson.

=====================================

I am not a good judge of talent, but I trust a few posters and some say he is showing good improvement, the majority that screams the loudest say bust.

He is expected to start as the nickle back, and it is just year 2, so...

yea....Sanchez is a "starter" on Justin Beiber's dance card

Not so much about tooting my horn over Slausen, rather I was responding to a post about Elite teams and there 2009 draft in regards to starters.

This one saddens me as I was so excited when the Pats got him. Major disappointment. We waited for Butler to "make a f*cking play, Darius" like Brady shouted to him from the sideline last season, but it never happened. Officially a bust for us.

Lol. Brady actually said that?
