Reiss concerned about Cunningham

MIke Reiss is probably one of the most knowledgable and savy pats reporters out there.. i give him alot of credit...

Mike is the best Pats reporter out there, but I don't trust his personnel judgments. Now, what he sometimes does, I believe, is take what he perceives to be the judgments of the staff and transform them into his "own" judgments. Whether he's doing that here, we don't know.

I am Crowell33 internet message board poster, and I know more than all of them !

:rocker:

this statement is 100% correct..if the "reporters" are John "Twomasses" or Tony "Gasbaggarotti"....

It would be so nice to click on a thread and see additional discussion or updates to the thread topic instead of 2-10 page pissing matches all of the time.

That is something the mods can very easily keep in check, yet choose not to, for some reason. Perhaps Ian can shed some light on this subject.

Hmmm....

Gentlemen, I SHARE your Rolly-Eyed annoyance with the astonishing endurance of some of the Flame Wars, hereabouts ~ Bruins Versus Johnson LVI was a recent installment.

Even so, I have to give Props...

Even in THAT instance, there was a little bit of FOOTBALL at the bottom of the pan...if you shook it long enough.

All in all, this is a fairly digestible Forum...

Some of my Wheat gets tossed out with the Chaff...to my great annoyance.

And a lot of CHAFF...clogs my view of the WHEAT...

***

But when I compare it with other places, I think this Crew does a pretty good job of Letting The Players Play...without letting us get TOO carried away...for the most part.

Is this a case of one reporter copying another? The media wants to forget this but when Mike Lowell first came to Boston some idiot watching him in Spring training said he had a slow bat speed. Then the other lemmings in the media copied this crap and everyone was talking about Lowell's slow bat speed. Total bunk; Lowell came out and hit 47 of doubles.

Steve De Ossie said tonight ( CNEST ) that in his opinion Cunningham would
not be cut from the team.

Way to go out on a limb, Steve.

No sh!t?? Cunningham is going to get a 2nd yr here, after 5 big starts as a rookie??? I'm completely shocked, I tell ya..

Way to go out on a limb, Steve.

Really...that's a pretty bold statement right there, in regards to Cunningham's future.

That takes a load off my mind. I really was worried for a minute there, Steve.

No need to drag baseball analogies onto the football forum. We have our own. Cassel hanging by a thread and passed on the depth chart by the backup team sources loved was the classic example of media lemmings flocking to parrott a storyline of their own making. FWIW Gutierrez just got cut again by yet another team...as of course did KOC last week...

I just had to point out this mixed up little gem, in case someone missed it.

More seriously, I rewatched all of Cunningham's snaps as a rookie, and he did some excellent work defending the run, improved dramatically in coverage, and still applied some serious pressure when called upon. He's a steady, consistent performer who does exactly what he needs to do in this defense. Good player, should improve with time. Patience, everyone.

What most people seem to forget is that Cunningham is the strongside linebacker which means he lines up in front of- wait for it- Vollmer.

Cunningham was a mid 2th round pick that most people had him graded as a 3rd rounder so he cant be a bust he's not a top 5 pick, will he every become the 10 sack pass rushing beast that we all want him to be i Dont know but if he can at lest bring something to the table and help this team win im ok with that

It was also mentioned that Cunningham has struggled on one-on-one drills which means he's struggled with all the OL lined up in front of him. Unless there's some weird coincidence that everytime Cunningham takes a turn on those drills also happen to be Vollmer's turn as his opposite.

What exactly is the definition of "struggled"?

Well I think Cunningham is more of a run-stuffing OLB than a pass-rushing OLB. We did see him get pretty close to the quarterback a number of times last year so obviously he CAN pass rush to some extent, at least when the circumstances are right. But to expect him to develop into a double-digit sack guy is unrealistic.

He is a solid run defender and I expect that he will eventually be a solid pass rusher, but he's not going to be elite in that area.

Below is the exact definition of 'struggle'. I'm assuming the reports that Cunningham has 'struggled' in camp means that he hasn't been performing well against competition.

strug·gle? ?[struhg-uhl] Show IPA verb, -gled, -gling, noun
verb (used without object)

1.to contend with an adversary or opposing force.
2.to contend resolutely with a task, problem, etc.; strive: to struggle for existence.
3.to advance with violent effort: to struggle through the snow.
4.(of athletes and competitors) to be coping with inability to perform well or to win; contend with difficulty: After struggling for the whole month of June, he suddenly caught fire and raised his batting average 30 points.
verb (used with object)
5.to bring, put, etc., by struggling: She struggled the heavy box into a corner.
6.to make (one's way) with violent effort.

Who are you to say that it's unrealistic? How do you know that at this early stage? I'm not defending Cunningham so much as I'm asking a legitimate question. Nobody knows what this kid will develop into yet. If you're that good at evaluating talent, then you should really consider being paid to do it for a living . . . I'm only half kidding about that.

I learned a new word today: recusant.

Thanks.
