AFC Championship Game: Jets at Steelers

Mendenhall is a more gifted athlete than BJGE. Statistics be damned.
In any case I don't want to bother with the RB debate.
All I care is that the Jets LOST!!! END of their season!

The biggest difference I think for the Steelers was their defense. They could get off the field on 3rd downs. They made stops on defense in the red zone and they forced a few turnovers (on downs and by fumble). That's something our own defense couldn't do. The Steelers offense wasn't a whole lot better than the Pats. Scoring only 21 points. But their final drive was excellent, as they converted the 1st downs needed to ice the game.

So Pittsburgh getting first downs with Mendenhall makes BJGE as good an athlete as Him? This is getting better.

Mendenhall had a 35 yd run in the first half. He has at least a 50 yard and 60 yard run in each of the last two seasons.

How many 35 or more yard runs does BJ have? (it's a trick question).

BJGE has zero, the same as the number of fumbles he has.

How many fumbles does Mendenhall have? (your turn for a trick question).

You know what? Nobody in football is judged by averages. Mendenhall was solely responsible for four first downs, one a run of 35.

That's how they measure things in football, first downs and touchdowns.

BJGE had 3 first downs in just 9 attempts (although one of them was made possible by a facemask penalty, and even then, that was a 7 yard gain).

We were in, I think 2 goal line situations, so the potential for a TD was there, but not taken.

Did I say Mendenhall was more reliable than BJ? NO.

Are we talking about reliability here? No.

I like BJ. He gets more out of his natural athletic ability than any running back in the league. He should be commended for his work ethic and consistency.

Parcells said you are what you are. He is a reliable complimentary back for a good passing offense. People can pretend he'd take over games if given the chance, that's fine. Doesn't make him faster, more powerful or elusive by wishing it.

How is 9 rush attempt a "benefit"?

I'm sorry, do teams play 8 in the box to stop BJ, taking a chance that Brady can't beat them? I must be living in an alternate universe.

Perhaps you could take a look at the first drives of the Patriots?

First drive was 3 runs and 5 passes.

Second drive was begun with a run that was called back by penalty. After that, it was 3 runs, 4 passes and the sack on third down after Crumpler dropped the TD pass.

In other words, they started out about mixing the pass and run, and moved the ball the length of the field both times, with both drives starting from inside the Patriots own 20. The end result was a 7-3 deficit.

Pretending that some mythical "balance" was the problem is a nice story to tell your kids 30 years from now, but it just doesn't hold water in the face of what was actually happening on the field.

I don't quite follow this logic. The Patriots best drives were the first two that featured a nice mixture of run/pass. But then to suggest that these drives produced an end result of a 3-7 deficit conveniently leaves out the fact that the Patriots defense gave up the 7 points. If the Patriots take care of the football (e.g. no Brady pick and/or Crumpler drop) on those drives, the end result is a 10-0 or 14-0 lead. The deficit was not caused by an early commitment to the running game. THAT notion is "mythical". A few really bad situational football plays contributed to the deficit.

And how is balance "mythical", BTW? Is it mythical in the sense that it is akin to the "fountain of youth" or the "yeti"? The Jets defensive personnel/scheme signified that they were ostensibly ceding the run in order to stop Brady and the Patriots passing game. A prolonged commitment to the running game could have forced them out of these schemes.

Mendenhall: 324 attempts, 13 TDs, 3.9 YPC, 61 first downs (18.8%)
Green-Ellis: 229 attempts, 13 TDs, 4.4 YPC, 62 first downs (27.1%)

Care to try that again? :)

I don't think Mendenhall had 324 attempts in that game. Again, if you want to accumulate statistics for different games and come to the conclusion that BJ is equal to Corey Dillon in a certain year, be my guest.

Football is not an excel spreadshet, it is a game that varies depending on defensive and offensive adjustments.

Pretend defenses key on BJ every game and he's as good as Corey Dillon. If that's what you need to believe to make you happy, I'm not going to stop you.

Except they continued to be balanced in the 3rd and 4th quarter. I suppose we should give back the 8 point drive that brought us to within 3 points, because it was the least balanced, mostly out of the shotgun?

steelers O only really scored what, 17 points?

the steelers O, what they did so well was make alot of clutch plays and draw out alot of drives, killing ALOT of clock

When you're up 24-0, what do you want them to do?

They played smart. Ben had thrown 2 INTs en route to that 24-0, so they played smart, conservatively.

When the offense needed to make a play, it was there. They did.

I give the Steelers' Oline a ton of credit.

I'd just like to thank the Jets for rescuing what looked like a pretty dismal winter of Jetsing and Rexing. Now I can go back to thinking about the Patriots' draft bonanza.

I did not say anything about giving back 8 points. And you are using one drive late in the 3rd quarter as the crux of your argument?

I also think that BJGE did not get enough carries after the first two drives (only 9 total). The Patriots had 45 pass attempts to 28 rushing attempts. So I do not understand why you feel the Patriots offensive attack was balanced.

Obviously you can't identify when defenses stack the box if you have to ask that question, so yes, you are living in an alternate universe.

I really dislike Hochuli...

I used to like him when he first started out, years ago. But he has become a self-centered ego-maniac out there in recent years. What a theatrical douche-bag. I expect him to do an Ahnuld and flex his biceps any minute.
