Re: Credible Twitter source: Pats to shop Welker

This guy looks awesome - he would fit like a freaking glove - do what it takes Bill - seriously

Jones is actually one of the WR's available that played in a pro style offense. He also played for Saban, whose demeanor is a lot like Belichick's. He plays faster than his 40 time, is big, tall, physical, and has soft hands. His route running, from what I have seen, is ridiculously good. He has all the qualities of a Randy Moss without the impending mental breakdown. While AJ Green is the best receiver in the draft, Jones is the better fit for our system. He can go deep and is a threat over the middle of the field.

YouTube - Julio Jones Highlights 2009

Sorry for the music as I'm pretty sure you're not a 50 Cent guy but take a look at this highlight reel from 2009. Notice how many Patriot-type plays are in there and the kind of work he does over the middle. Notice how physical he is as a WR. I would love to somehow move back up into the first round and take him if we have DE, OLB, and maybe RG wrapped up (hopefully the CBA can get worked out so we can make a move on one of those positions in FA). I don't think it's going to happen, but a guy can hope.

Re: Credible Twitter source: Pats to shop Welker

Ummm . . . that's not BECAUSE OF Welker.

And I shudder to think what would have happened to the 2008 and 2009 Pats without him.

The 2008 and 2009 Pats won a combined 0 playoff games so lets not pretend Welker did them a whole bunch of favors.

Re: Credible Twitter source: Pats to shop Welker

The Jets have won more playoff games in 2 seasons than we have since gaining Welker 3 years ago. So my point is that we should work towards winning playoff football that the 03/04 Pats were perfect at. Mankins and Wilfork are awesome but they can't do everything when their partners are getting blocked or beat.

I agree we need a pass rush, but even without a pass rush we could still be in the hunt today if we had better blocking on the offensive line, those are two key areas where we have a leader and some guys that are imo soft, and that hasn't changed since 07, I think the idea of going 18-1 or 14-3 with an MVP blocks people from looking at the bigger picture, it won't suddenly work out unless we get lucky like the 06 Colts.

That's not enough of a sample to tell me much, honestly. The Jets record in those 2 years gave them early divisonal round games. if you're doing a comparison, you can't penalize the Patriots for grabbing byes in 2007 and 2010. That makes the playoff record mean less.

The point is, the Patriots won those Super Bowls by playing the same exact style they are playing now. The difference is that back then they had a few more players than we do now.

I look at our defense and see young players and guys like Banta-Cain, Ninkovich, Love, gerard Warren, who will not be starting the next time the Patriots make a big splash.

I also think you're giving the Jets too much credit. We got beat by a team that is suspect, suspect in the front DL and suspect on offense. And they did it because the Patriots made 3 or 4 bonehead mistakes they couldn't overcome.

Using your logic, neither did Brady.

Where are you going with this?

I'm saying that the 2008 and 2009 season doesn't make Welker untouchable. Especially since it didn't make Randy Moss untouchable.

For the amount of money they were paying him, I don't think you could replace him with a receiver who would have done more for the Pats. Without him, the 2008 Pats are maybe a .500 team, and the 2009 Pats quite likely miss the playoffs.

Re: Credible Twitter source: Pats to shop Welker

But it's not like Welker had anything to do with why they LOST that playoff game (unless you want to say it's somehow his fault that he tore his ACL the week before, or that he cost the Pats a playoff berth in 2008), so I don't see any point in turning on him, either.

I'm not necessarily turning on him I'm saying that him being a vital piece on two teams that didn't win a single playoff game doesn't make him untouchable. Randy Moss was just as if not more important than he was in 2008 and 2009 (particularly since he is what opened the field up for Welker) and it didn't stop the team from dumping him.

OTOH, the Patriots felt that securing Welker's services was their #1 priority in 2007.

No, he's not untouchable, but trading him, in the grand scheme of things, is not likely to make this team better in the long run.

I disagree. Look at the numbers Edelman put up in place of Welker. We've seen pedestrian receivers put up fluky numbers as the slot receiver in this system, Randy Moss taking a safety away from the middle of the field in 2008 and 2009 only inflated those numbers more. If you think it'll be hard to replace a 5'8" receiver with good (not great) quickness and athleticism then be my guest. My biggest concern with trading Welker is how much all of his teammates love him.

OTOH, the Patriots felt that securing Welker's services was their #1 priority in 2007.

They also felt securing Adalius Thomas was a high priority and worth a huge contract. Go figure.

Are you serious?

First off, Welker didn't even play in the 2009 playoffs.

Secondly, he helped Matt Cassel to an 11-5 record in 2008.

You can't be serious.

Lets not act like Welker woulda changed the outcome of that game.

I stand corrected though, if overachieving in the regular season and then laying an egg in the playoffs is your goal, an offense where Welker leads the team in receptions works wonders.

Quit while you're behind. You're embarrassing yourself.

That's telling me. What an awesome counter argument.

He's the reason why, if Jones falls out of the top ten, I would like to trade into the first round and give the Pats three picks there. I'm not sure Dareus is going to fall outside of the top ten and anybody else is going to have to put some serious bulk on their frame in the offseason in order to start from Week 1. That's why, the more I think of it, I think we go OLB at 17 (assuming we don't make a move for this outside of the draft). Pouncey should be available at 28. I would go with him there. If Jones falls out of the top ten, I would like to see Belichick package something together and move up in the first round to take him. He is a PERFECT fit for us at flanker.

Dude's a monster...Seems like he might fit into the Pats system.

I want him.

It's amazing this thread is still here.

It's also amazing that the guy spends his entire offseason working his a** off trying to get back on the field in time for the season, and there are many who have already turned on him. He was viewed fairly heroically by most on this board, and then some idiot comes out with a rumor (just days after the season ends), and there's a high percentage of people in this thread who are already talking about the fact Welker's a bum and they should move him. He's always been a hard working guy and has never given fans a reason to think otherwise. He had a few drops this year, but the fact he performed as good considering the significance of his injury is still amazing all things considered.

Man...it's sad...just sad. Although this has always been a pattern...but it still doesn't mean I'll ever understand it. We haven't had too many free agent receivers come here and perform well in this system. We've actually got a pretty good one in Welker, so I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss him just yet. :explative
