Re: Chris Mortensen Filed to ESPN Vincent Jackson and Logan Mankins will report to

Yes they can unless a lockout occurs prior to the end of the league year (which it likely would). Then it won't matter as there won't be any UFAgency - all players not under contract for 2011 will just be in limbo until a new CBA is hammered out. At the moment the issue would be the tag amount, although that didn't stop them with Cassel... OL is not broken down into Guard, Center, Tackle, so the tag for any OLman is basically at the LT rate. Thing is there won't be any CBA rules in effect and owners may change that if the union decertifies (and basically the owners last best offer becomes the CBA in the interim) or they may change that as part of a new CBA...

They could also use the Transition Tag on Mankins, which would give them the right of first refusal on any new deal. However, this would negate any draft pick compensation that they would receive in 2012,if Mankins signed with a new team.

Re: Chris Mortensen Filed to ESPN Vincent Jackson and Logan Mankins will report to

Mankins HAS to report THIS season to get his accrued year and become a true FA next season. I'm not sure if its before the 10th game or after it. I just know that there IS a ten involved .

The question is, do we want him back. I'm not sure. Sure he's an elite LG, but that's what you'd expect after a full off season of conditioning, a full training camp, 4 exhibition games, and 10 games in the season to get in the best football shape possible.

Just WHO is going to show up in mid November? What use will he be beyond experienced depth? Is it reasonable to expect that he is in the proper mind set, after all this kind of hold out, to perform at a pro level, let alone an elite level

And what does his sudden appearance do to the locker room chemistry?

Under the best of conditions. If he came back in great condition, mentally ready to give this team his best effort; he still wouldn't be able to play more than 2 or 3 games at a high level.......And what do you do with Dan Connolly who by most accounts is doing a very good job. Is he just tossed to the side of the road?

Sorry, but I don't see the upside to him coming back...period. I say trade him for whatever you can get. Right now I'd take a 4th for him and say "don't let the door hit you on the way out". He isn't going to be much use this season, and won't be here next season.

The report I heard was after week 10, because of the bye early this year, we would have 7 games remaining.

Ken,

With all due respect, Logan Mankins is not an "elite" left guard. A very good one, a good one, whatever, but he is not, and has never been "elite".

Well Ken.....What do you suggest?....We can't trade him because he won't sign his tender prior to the trade deadline.

Immediately cut him?.....That would make him a FA(Cutting off your nose to spite your face).

Sign the tender, than send him home?.....This has been proved previously to have SERIOUS legal ramifications(with the NFLPA).This isn't indentured servitude, these are businessmen...on both sides of the table.

Everyone needs to take the emotion out of the equation, here. You can bet Belichick will.

I'll bet that when Mankins reports by the 10th week BB and Kraft will say:"Welcome back, let's play some football and see what happens"

.....any takers?

Re: Chris Mortensen Filed to ESPN Vincent Jackson and Logan Mankins will report to

Can the Pats Franchise Mankins after this season..??? I am not saying they want him at that salary - but would that not be a way of retaining him to get best possible value for a trade? I am thinking a franchise and trade like they did with Matt Cassel
Assuming he reports, then yes they can franchise him. I doubt they would but yes they can.

And if he doesn't report, then they maintain the status quo for another year.

Of course, everything I have written above is subject to the terms of any new CBA that gets negotiated. Basically I am assuming those parts of the old CBA remain intact.

Well, I don't think they are going to trade him but it does remain in the realm of possibility (until Tuesday). It would involve Mankins and another team working out an agreement whereby Mankins agrees to sign with the Pats, gets traded, then lets his new deal take over.

When has this shown to have "SERIOUS" legal ramifications? I remember the Eagles did it to T.O. He took them to an arbitrator and lost. You can't force a team to activate a guy, so if the Patriots want, they can take the option where they pay him his signed tender (pro-rated for all the missed time) and never play him. I also seem to remember Keyshawn was deactivated with the Bucs. They had to pay him, but they didn't have to play him.

My prediction is he will be inactive for the balance of the season.

1.They would have to sign and trade by the Oct 19 trade deadline.......not gonna happen.

2.I'm saying you can't just tell him to "go home, don't bother".....The keyshawn situation did have problems with the NFLPA....you can make him inactive, but you can't just tell him to get lost.

I agree. I was just responding to the comment that it "can't" happen.

I seem to remember the Bucs telling him to do exactly that and him and T.O. losing their appeals. But hey, if Mankins wants to show up and put in a full day's work and practice if he knows he ain't playing, more power to him. Of course, I doubt the Patriots could be forced to let him run drills with the team.

If Belichick takes the emotion out, which we know he will, and as reported, Mankins gets along well with everyone in the locker room, I would say if no trade is worked out he will play.

BB values versatility and since Brace looks real good at end, we could use a vet backup Nose Tackle.

Re: Chris Mortensen Filed to ESPN Vincent Jackson and Logan Mankins will report to

I hope Mankins breaks his leg when finally shows up, he's POS.

Re: Chris Mortensen Filed to ESPN Vincent Jackson and Logan Mankins will report to

Any possible way to prevent him from getting his accrued season?

hmmm now you are thinking like AJ Smith

Re: Chris Mortensen Filed to ESPN Vincent Jackson and Logan Mankins will report to

We get Mankins for 6 games. For a cheap price. Doesn't matter to us. But, helps the bottom line. We get compensation when he leaves. We'll get a 3rd rounder in the 2012 draft. Works out good actually. Don't need extra picks this year 2011. I'd be willing to bet we trade one of our 3rd rounders this year for a 2nd in 2012. So, tha draft is shaping up too. I'd bring him in tomorrow. He knows he has to report. Let's get on with it.

nice comment. I guess it takes one to know one

Re: Chris Mortensen Filed to ESPN Vincent Jackson and Logan Mankins will report to

The trade needs to happen, Mankins needs to be removed from the team.

They can't trade him. And, as long as he shows up in shape and plays like he can, I don't see the problem.

It's a business. Mankins is exercising his rights under his contract and the CBA. why does that bother you so much that you would wish physical harm on his person?

BTW, I can see you don't believe in Karma...

Way, way too rational. You have to go to "patsfans flame school" for a refresher course. :singing:

Re: Chris Mortensen Filed to ESPN Vincent Jackson and Logan Mankins will report to

It's pretty evident that teams are scared to take on Mankins. Not sure if it is the economics or just how Mankins and his agent may overvalue themselves?

i missed that chapter...how is that evident? (sincere question)

absolutely. there's no sign that he's a locker room problem. his teammates all understand the "business" side of this. as long as he's in shape and can help the team, i don't see where there'd be a problem. I think that people on this board are more worked up about his returning than the guys he plays with.
