QB is the exception to every rule. An absolute MUST have regardless of cost or circumstance.

If you look at the Patriots roster from 1976 through 1979, you see tons of playmakers at every position, except 1, QB. If New England had Pastorini instead of Grogan, we would have a SB or 2 during that window, even against the mighty Steelers.

No - but if there's one they like then they must take him. You have to trust your scouts and doctors and then your coaches to develop him. If you're told his shoulder is fine and that he's that good they, yes, they MUST take him.

I guess I fundamentally agree with you both, but the principle runs into trouble in draft years when that franchise QB just may not be in the offing (2005 is the classic example). This year, I think it all comes down to Bradford's shoulder.

And if his shoulder is a long term problem I would likely pass. But, as Belichick says, "I'm not a doctor". He's been evaluated by the best, unless you think they have an agenda then I'd go with what they tell me.

The only teams that I think will draft him in the first are Seattle, Buffalo, and Minnesota. Seattle has pick 6 and 14 and I'm sure Pete Carrol recruited him in HS. I also think Chilly is willing to trade up to the teens. Holmgren likes reclamation projects at QB which can be drafted later. The Jags management wants Tebow apparently. I think San Franny is content with Alex Smith and they signed David Carr. I'd be mildly surprised if Clausen doesn't go to one of them. Prediction: Jimmy Clausen 14th overall to the Seattle Seahawks.

If you think about it, Oakland is situated perfectly to screw up a lot of mock drafts by going off the tracks and doing something bizarre.

Bizarre in the real world, or bizarre by Oakland standards?

Personally I rate Clausen ahead of Bradford. I still think though that you have to move up ahead of the Browns to be certain of getting him.
I wouldn't rule out the Chiefs either even though they have been saying good things about Matt Cassel. I would be quite sure that any input from Charlie Weis will be all about taking Clausen.

Personally I think Clausen will be a star in this league, Bradford can be too but I'm too concerned with his ability to stay injury-free.
