ESPN's Len Pasquarelli suggests that Antonio Cromartie could be traded "to an AFC East club in return for a tailback."
AFC East backs that may be on the block include Marshawn Lynch, Thomas Jones, and Laurence Maroney. Cromartie, though, probably doesn't appeal strongly to any of the aforementioned teams because he can't (or won't) tackle. A power runner with versatility, Lynch would be San Diego's most desirable pickup. It will likely take more than just Cromartie to get him.

There are a lot of myths (some truths) going on out there about Cromartie. Yes he blew an obvious well televised tackle (see Sanders for two of those, in the 06 Colts Championship game. One with less than two minutes to play on Adai's score....very bad! Oh yeah, .........we all forgot about that CS play, didn't we?). Merriweather has hit just air a few times this year.

In 2008 AC played the whole year with a broken hip and had 64 tackles. Assante Samuel in his first year after a spectacular FA pick up by the Eagles had......35 tackles!!!!! This year oIe' Assante had 40 tackles to Cromarties' 33 and they say AC was pretty decent in 2009 (horror play non withstanding). This was one year after a broken hip!!!.

Tackling????Deon Sanders was not a tackling machine but became almost better as a playmaker as he got more experience. What if that is Cromartie? He proved he can be a playmaker. Can he get back there?


NEWS BULLETIN OF AN IDEA!!!-Yes AC can't keep little "Scruffy" in his pants. We could Draft Tebow and make him room with Cromartie for the year...something would have to give! We could do a reality show.

My point is Cromartie plays with a broken hip and Maroney has a hang nail and is out for 20 games (I am still waiting for him to reveal to the world what he said was his non-playing reasons he would explain) but LM is an untouchable on this forum by some and should be kept at all costs to perhaps stay in the BB dog house yet one more year before reaching FA status... I am sorry nobody can convince me that this is not a fair trade, in fact more favorable our way. Please try to convey to me what the h*** you guys are thinking on this one? All anyone should need to know about Cromartie is that he can't read. What more needs to be said? We all remember how well Tebucky Jones worked out. Supposedly his IQ was considered leagally disabled. Players in a BB defense need something between their ears, even by "ath-a-lete" standards.

First thing you do...well, second thing. First you stop comparing Cromartie to Sanders. Second thing you do is learn to evaluate talent based on production, not original draft position. If Maroney was an UDFA we would all be signing his praises. So disabuse yourself of the need to justify draft slot, and look at production. Look at 4 ypc and admit that if Sammy Morris could somehow elevate himself to 4 ypc he'd be awesome. He can't. He isn't that good, but from there it's a small step to saying a guy making the minimum who can gain 4 ypc is okay to have on the team.

Sheesh. Draft slot means nothing after the first training camp.

Who are you Florio? I never said Cromartie was Sanders. The spin of the day? I really don't understand your comments. Are you agreeing or disagreeing with what I said? There are CBs that make their business making plays, not playing linebacker, like Deon Sanders and Assante. I think Cromartie is a playmaker and not a run stopper.

Thank you for bringing his out on Maroney. He was a first rounder. Show me where I said anything about his Draft status on this targeted discussion other than they have both been underachievers?

O.K. we can play the stats game. Look up Maroney's YPC the last three years. Cousin it is going south. I think you agreed with me.

Look I am not trying to put Cromartie on a pedestal but fact is fact, he is more valuable to work with than Maroney at this point in their careers for the Pats. Maroney could blow up the league in SD. That would be great for the kid. If we get a few more playmakers on defense it is a good thing for us.

That was my point. Giving up Maroney for him if this is at all possible, isn't a gut wrenching decision and good for each side. I think there is more to the Cromartie story though we do not know.

? Morris and Taylor both had higher YPC than Maroney last year.

This is not even close for me. If we could have Cromartie for Maroney, I would do it in an instant. Laurence is a talented back but he just hasn't produced that much in NE. As seen with the success of Taylor and Morris, it is much easier to find a RB who can replace Maroney's production than it is to find a CB who has the skill set of Cromartie.

When Maroney went down in 08, Morris filled in perfectly fine. He averaged nearly 5 YPC. When Asante left, we replaced him Delthea O'Neal in the secondary. Draft picks were used on Wheatley and Wilhite who haven't proven to be anything special, yet I do see promise with Wilhite.

If we lose Bodden to someone who is willing to pay him top dollar, I don't see why trading for Cromartie is a bad idea. He'd be an adequate replacement at a cheap price with one year left on his deal. He's shown the ability to be a ball hawk and is very good in man coverage. He's only 25 years old and had a pretty solid bounce back season this year. RB's are a dime a dozen. They are much easier to replace. Good CB's are a lot harder to replace. Trading for Cromartie would be a prime opportunity to get a good replacement for Bodden if he leaves. If Bodden left, would you rather have a secondary of Springs, Butler, Wilhite, Wheatley, Arrington, possible JAG FA/late round CB and Maroney at RB OR a secondary of Cromartie, Butler, Springs, Wilhite, Wheatley, Arrington and Taylor/Morris/FA/Draftee at RB? It's not even close in my eyes.

With Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie on the trading block for now -- and possibly on the chopping block if the Chargers can't find someone to take off their hands a guy who avoids contact like a germophobe at Grand Central Station -- the Chargers need to have a backup plan at the position.

As our friends at Rotoworld recently pointed out, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune firmly believes it will be Antoine Cason.

Cason, a first-round pick in 2008, was yanked from the team's nickel role in October. But Acee says the team still believes in him over the long haul.

The Chargers are making plans for Antoine Cason to be one of their starting corners in 2010, according to beat writer Kevin Acee.
The Chargers are high enough on Cason to be shopping Antonio Cromartie. Cason, a 2008 first-round pick, struggled a little bit as the nickel back in 2009 and was replaced at one point by Steve Gregory. However, San Diego is confident Cason will be better at his natural corner spot opposite Quentin Jammer.

So it looks like there's a very good chance Cromartie will be traded. If Maroney is available, I think he could possibly be a target for them. Not many young RB's who still have good upside are available. If Chargers fans think they are going to be able to get DeAngelo Williams-caliber player they are kidding themselves. I would say Cromartie is moved for a RB like Maroney or White who kind of need a change of scenery but have a good amount of years left on them, or possibly a draft pick.

I'm all for a Maroney-Cromartie swap if Bodden isn't retained.

my daughter's in san diego so i'm glad he's leaving, though, i do have female relatives in ma. that i would feel nervous for. never mind going out to a bar and getting a champagne bottle thrown at your head.

The thought was that if Bodden is retained, Butler has shown enough promise to slot in as the #2 and Wilhite could be a good #3. You also still have Springs and Wheatley, and potentially Arrington if he can bring anything to the table.

I really don't see a situation where we would have both. I'm fairly confident Butler will be a good starter in 2010, and if not, I'm fairly confident Wilhite will take a step forward and be a solid #2 CB. Either way Bodden or Cromartie as the "#1" with Butler 2 and Wilhite 3 is a very solid secondary IMO. Springs and Wheatley for depth.

I'd actually prefer to let Bodden walk and trade for Cromartie. Bodden at 29 at 6-7 million per year vs Cromartie at 26 at 1.225 million in 2010? I'll take my chances on Cromartie and find a replacement for Maroney (who might be gone after 2010 anyway).
