The Saints are unbeaten and should be given credit for it. Not an easy thing to do against anyone. They're co-#1 with the Colts until they lose.
With that as a given, their schedule has not been the most butal in the NFL. Their 10 opponents so far have a combined record of 37-63 (.370). Not terrible impressive. Take away the 10 losses to the Saints and they are still 37-53 (.411) - still not terribly impressive.
The Bucs, Rams, and Lions just aren't very good teams. The Bills and Panthers aren't particularly impressive either. No real way around that.
But you still have to win the games, as Pittsburgh and Cincinnati failed to do. You still have to overcome injuries, mistakes, turnovers, and everyone gunning for you. Divisional rivals play you tough, no matter what their record. And the so far no one has been able to come out on the winning side. That's very impressive, no matter how you look at it.
I said last week that the Pats were better than the Colts if they brought their A game, but that the Colts were more consistent than the Pats. I stand by that. The Saints haven't been as consistent as the Colts, but they are more explosive on both sides of the ball, and more balanced. And they've shown tremendous resiliency to come from behind, which to my mind is the scariest thing about them. We, on the other hand, have twice given away games that were essentially in the bag, against Denver and Indy. We haven't come from behind against anyone other than the Bills week 1.
I'll still take the Pats over anyone when playing aggressively, physically, and with balance for 60 minutes. But so far this season we haven't played aggressively, physically, and with balance for a full 60 minutes in any single game, much less over a string of games, so it's kind of a hypothetical argument.
Maybe we can change that on Monday night. I certainly hope so. Till that happens, weak schedule or not, the Saints are better than we are.
