Once again this week I watched Charlie Casserly's segment on the CBS pregame show, and again I'm griping about it here on the board.

Apparently this week the league sent a letter to the teams warning that teams can be penalized and/or players fined for running into officials, even if it's an accident. Last week there were like three instances of players running into the zebras... but what irked me was Casserly alleging that our own Wes Welker used an umpire to block a defender in last week's game. Did anyone else see this?

Maybe I'm being a little too sensitive, it just seems kinda silly.

It happens a lot - why Casserly picked a Patriot to show something which is within the rules but that he thinks shouldn't be is . . . well that's for everyone to decide.

He did use the ref as a pick. That was an intentional play drawn up to do just that.

yea, thats considered a smart play....and an excellent route by wes

Clearly the zebras have poor vision and sometimes they don't get out of the way. What do they want the players to do? Walk down the field in a neat and orderly fashion? Maybe the refs need to lose some weight and get out the way faster. I've seen them hinder more plays then they have ever helped in any way.

They showed a letter sent from the NFL today, it's now a ref's judgment call to throw a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct if they decide a player hits an official without trying hard enough to avoid the hit.

Yeah, Wes used the ref to set a pick, but it wasn't Wes who collided with him- it was the Buc that was trying to cover him. So wouldn't the penalty be on the Bucs?

If anything, I would think that this new ruckus would be in response to this:

Casserly doesn't have a firm grasp of logic or reasoning.

There were other instances of refs getting hit, and to bring up Welker really has nothing to do with that point.

Their argument would probably be that the play is set up so that neither the Bucs or the ref has time to react.

The ref shouldn't have been standing there. That's what happens when officials are on the field, they get hit on occasion. Dumb argument by Casserly.

If I were a ref, that might be my favorite rule.

I can't remember what college game I was watching this weekend but it happened and the commentators discussed how that was something teams coached players to do i.e. use refs as picks. So nothing new here.

Well, now the refs have a convenient flag to throw when the Pats visit Indy later this month.

What BS, if Welker runs a tight route by the ref, it's up to the Bucs player to adjust accordingly.

The NFL is getting ridiculous with this crap.

This is the same Casserley who always gets the draft sooooooooooooo right each year

If i made that many mistakes in my job i'd be fired

It happens in the NBA too. Players are concentrating on the game and watching the players. This is the dumbest rule. No one is intentionally hitting a ref. This will definitely end up being a game changer somewhere and I see this rule be changed.

That's the point of running a pick, you leave the player no time to adjust. If he adjusts, then it's not a pick.

Bill Belichick said:
There’s a point to everything and how much is too much and what's not enough. Hey, I tell you right now when they meet again this year there will be another one in this year too. They’ll talk about it, I don’t know whether they’ll pass it or not, but there will be some other rule. Like I said, I think you should talk to the guys who make the rules. There are plenty of people on that committee and they love to talk about the rules that they've made and how great they are and all that, honestly. The Charley Casserly’s of the world, that have all the answers to everything. Talk to them. They’ve spent a lot of time studying it, a lot more than I have and I’m sure they have all the answers.

Bill Belichick, on the rules committee in 2007

Once I am able to focus past that dead rat Casserly has on top of his head, I usually enjoy his commentary. I didn't see him today, so I am disappointed to hear that he singled Welker out.

Here's a ref tripping over himself in the meantime , today's game NYG- Philadelphia:
