Patriots trading Richard Seymour to the Raiders!!!

I guess I'd feel better if Lawyer was half the player that Seymour is. I think Milloy was a team leader (sometimes positive, sometimes negative), and that his being cut did affect the team emotionally. But the guy didn't do squat in 2002 and after the shock wore off I don't think there was much impact on the field, especially with Rodney stepping in.

Seymour, on the other hand, is a HOF'er who had an awesome season last year and should have several more in front of him, AND there is no heir-apparent DE to step in for this season.

I was pissed at the WR situation in 2006 because we have only a finite number of years with Brady. I feel the same now, except 3 more of those years have passed so actually I feel alot worse.

Sorry for the negativity. This is certainly the most negative thing I've ever posted, but I just feel like crap today.

It's all good. My guess is that BB really liked what he saw in Pryor and Brace and felt confident that he could dump Seymour's salary without losing too much at the D-Line position. We're going to feel the impact of his loss throughout the season, no doubt. But if anybody can minimize it, it's Belichick. My guess is that we're going to see A LOT of 4-3. When we go to the 3-4, Brace is in on running downs and either Pryor or Green (probably Green for the most part) will be in on passing downs. That's just my guess based on what I've seen from both Brace and Pryor in the preseason.

The situations are not really similar. We had Harrison to replace Milloy. And just BTW, cutting Milloy in the week before the beginning of the season was probably the riskiest thing that Belichick has done. He could ahve cut him weeks earlier. We lost the first game 41-0. Key players were vocal and furious (including Bruschi). The T-E-A-M was never the same. The relationship between the players and the staff has never been the same. The franchise, the business, was successful and won the Super Bowl. I submit that this was one of the worst days in the history of the franchise. However, the franchise did recover and never looked back.

This time, there seems to be no real plan, just a cold calculated judgement that the equivalent of a 2009 3rd round draft choice is worth less than the services of Seymour. This is similar to the choice to start the preseason that we'd rather have someone like Ninkovich on the team than Vrabel.

31-0. And our coach is Bill Belichick. I highly doubt that he's going into this without a plan. If he felt there wasn't a plan in place already, he probably would have pulled a trigger on this trade weeks or even months ago.

Here's a scenario that would probly never happen but it's just a thought. What if Seymour goes a plays for the Raiders for a year & then signs back with us for a more reasonable contract, & we end up with the Raiders Pick and we get Seymour back.

While I don't think he'll resign with the Faiders, I don't think he'll be coming back to us either. I haven't heard anything yet, but I can all but guarantee you that there will be some sour grapes over this.

Preach it brother! I'm right there with you man. That first rounder may turn into an impact player. It also could very well turn into another Watson or Maroney. In the meantime the team loses arguably their best player on what is an already suspect defense. Risky business by Mr. Belichick. Risky business indeed.

The only way he wont sign with the raiders is if he stinks it up and the raiders let him walk.

In a way I'd feel better if this happened at any other position (except QB). My reasoning is that while we have definite unknowns and holes in the defense, it's often rationalized that our DL is one of, if not the, best in the league, and they can overcome and cover up some deficiencies in other areas. Well, we just traded our best guy off that line and I'll be two years fatter, grayer, and drunker before the guy we've traded for even plays (if nothing else develops from this).

OK, I have to quit it.

I don't expect to franchise Mankins. After all, he'll be an RFA.

But you are correct, the loss in 2010 is very specualtive. However, the alternative is to believe that if Seymour stayed, the team would not have franchised him or trnasitioned him, and would have little or no chance of getting value for him.

I would also note that the "great value" in 2011 is the equivalent of a 2010 #2 less the value of a 2010 #4. This is just moving back the 2011 values to 2010.

I believe that BB asked for the 11 rather than the 10.
There is a very good chance that there will be a much more reasonable rookie cap in 2011. If a top 5-10 pick can be had in 2011 and it comes with an affordable price tag, it was genius to take it in 2011.

Bill can't win for winning with some of you. The team was never the same...LOL Damn straight. It became a dynasty thereafter.

Do you have a source for that statement?

Everyone loves the dynasty and all that Bill has built.

Are you really saying that the firing of one of the most respected players in the history of the patriots one week before the season was a positive? Did making it clear that Belichick didn't care what anyone thought was a positive? Do you remember Bruschi's comments?

Belichick could have done what he has done many times since. He could have cut Milloy a month or more before the season started.

Please believe that the Milloy firing is remembered by every patriot at the time and every patriot since. It is part of the character of Bill Belichick. There is the good, the bad and the ugly in the best coach in the history of the NFL.

Gotta love those raiders, they basicly drafted a 29 year old proven run stopping DE with their 2011 pick.

The patriots would never trade a 1st round pick for a proven 29 year old passing rushing sack leader.

Raiders, they will never learn.

Dude you feel like crap because you're right! We just shipped out arguably our best defensive player five days before the season starts. How some here don't anticipate a drop off on that side of the ball is beyond me. Our secondary is suspect. I think alot of us were counting on the front seven (of which the DL is the strength) to take the pressure off that unit while it comes together. Now they got to do it sans one of the few truly impact players we had on D.

Luckily we have an offense that is capable of outscoring our opponents. If you want to feel better, just trust that BB isn't the type of coach to execute this type of move without a plan in place. He could have done this months ago. There's a reason why he waited until after the preseason to do it. My guess is that he liked what he saw in someone. We will find out a week from tomorrow who that was.

Raiders have no chance to win this season but they're renting a great player for one year.

Pats have a great chance to win but they've traded away their best player on their weakest unit.

This trade makes no sense for either side to me.

Maybe he likes AD and mayo to help stop the run when seymour is gone. Seymour was no sack monster, run stoping DE yes, but no sack monster.

Lawyer was that player in 2001. Fans had no clue he wasn't that player in 2002. Hell, coaches didn't even see it until Bill forced them to. And while we had Rodney stepping in we had a rookie corner turned safety playing along side him as a result.

Seymour had 8.5 sacks last season. The defense was ineffective so I can't say he had an awesome season. I wonder what the coaches tape said. He's not a lock HOF'er yet and given where he was traded to he may not turn out to be. And he doesn't have several seasons left, maybe 3-4 decreasingly awesome seasons. He turns 30 next month and had more work done on those knees this off season that already have 8 seasons of miles on them. With Green, Brace and Prior added to the roster, as well as Burgess who may now see more time with his hand on the ground, no better time to do this than the present when a 2011 presumably top 10 pick in a potentially rookie capped draft is available.

Richard has been telling his teamates for months he might be gone. It was inevitable, Bill just decided to do it on terms that benefitted the team long term.

OK, that makes me feel a little less bad.
