Patriots can't draft out of the first round

I think your spot on. When Delta O'Neil can walk off the street and start, then that should tell u a little about the drafts the last few years. This is starting to become a topic on sports radio and I have read a few stories about the lack luster past drafts.

There are plenty of stupid people calling into radio shows. That's not a surprise.

There isn't a single team that drafts perfectly. Every team has busts, and not many late round picks stick around. You have to compare the Patriots drafting record with the rest of the league, and you'd find it stands out pretty well.

Plus, Tom Brady says hi.

Outside the first round 1 fluke pick in 7 years does not cut it.

The OP looks to be alcohol driven because a binky was cut........

All I KNOW, is the Pats are a damn good team year in and year out, and are consistently in the hunt......
IDGAS whether it is via trade/draft or surrogate mother, as long as tey are on the team to win GAMES!!

The team is assembled to win GAMES, not draft contests!!

Geeeeeeeeeeeezzzz, this is ******* pathetic!!

We are viewed by the consensus as the best team in the NFL.
Since beginning with that 2006 draft, we have turned over most of our roster.
Since the draft was the only asset we had to work with, I guess we did pretty well.

Time to face facts, your expectations are warped.
Wilhite, taken in the 4th, started at the end of last year, and looks like a permanent starter now, and you call that decent at best for a 4th rounder? You are wrong.
Wheatley was injured. Injured = sucks to you?
Crabel has been injured. So now you are requiring the drafter to predict the future of injuries?
Thomas was here 3 years and then we got something for him. Please tell me the average career span, with the drafting team of a 3rd round pick. If you actually looked and tried to base your opinion on fact, you'd be surprised.
Overall, the guy who just posted you are an idiot, nailed it.

You proud of that performance are you?

To (somewhat) quote the OP himself:

They would've drafted better if they had issued them some "tighter" numbers, they shoulda given those rookies "tight" numbers instead of those lame ones.

That would've solved the whole problem---gotta keep those jersey numbers TIIIGHT...

Well there are some people calling in and making good points. Even Zolak (who played in the NFL) said that there drafts have been not so great.

I dont see how the op is all that crazy. Recently their drafts have been mediocre at best. 2003 was great, 2005 was decent but since its been lackluster. Its the truth just go by production. Luckily the team still had talent to overcome it. But if you saw the picks and production and it was another team, you wouldnt say they were scouting geniuses. When you watch the draft the pats always make these picks early where these guys were projected late, people say they know something, but then thes guys turn out to be unproductive. And i agree no sense in drafting garret mills and david thomas back to back then never puting them on the field.

whatever.

I still like their chances this year.

HUH? Where the hell have you been???

Koppen, Cassel, Samuel, Wilson, Hobbs, Kaczur, Gostkowski, Thomas, Givens, Branch, LeKevin Smith, Willie Andrews, Matthew Slater, Greg Robinson-Randall, Patrick Pass, Jarvis Green, Tully Banta-Cain, Justin Rogers.

Those are all players taken outside the 1st round. ALL of them have contributed for more than ONE year to the Patriots.

The fact that anyone is even given Hey Bro's rant ANY sort of validity is pathetic.

NFL teams aren't solely built on the draft. But yes, I'll love to see some homegrown guys become stars.

Whatever dude.

I agree with the man. The drafts haven't been great. I hate to see so many people bash someone when we all know its true. Just think about how much better we could be if just ONE of those picks on defense could have turned out to be a superstar(Excluding 1st round, hence MAYO). DEFENSE has cost us 2 championships. I'd like to see more ASANTE'S and less wheatley's.

Asante was no super stud when he was drafted, so what makes ya think Wheatley is gonna be some kind of bum?

With respect to the front office, it's somewhat harder to make a team who's been pretty stacked already over the years.

Some drafts work out, some drafts don't.

A couple yrs ago, we hardly had anyone who made it, this yr we hardly had anyone who didn't make it. It all averages out according to team plans, etc.

After our 3rd SB our scouting dept began getting raided by opposing teams. We've lost quite a few talented people there and the quality of our drafts has suffered accordingly. The biggest hit may have been when Dimitrioff (sp?) left to become the GM of the Falcons although that may be more speculation than fact. The truth is I don't know which personnel was the biggest lost but I do know that the accumulation of all the losses together has certainly hurt. We can only hope that the current scouting department has improved and that our 2009 draft will be much better than what we've seen the past few years.

It just goes to show you how many parts go into being a successful franchise. Not only on the field but obviously behind the scenes as well.

Out of interest who, instead of the guys we took in those years the OP mentioned, could we have taken who's gone on to be a good, NFL calibre player?

06: Jennings, Jones Drew in the second? Ok better options than Jackson in hindsight but since we took Maroney in the first we were hardly going to select another back. After those guys and going into the third was there better value instead of Thomas at that pick and after? You have to study this to truly say we can't draft in the 2nd to mid rounds. Anyone who cares to add feel free...

07: Moss and Welker trades....Why are those two even brought up? Aren't you happy we traded for them? Two of the best recievers in the NFL right now.

08: Again you look at value. Who provided better value late in the second round? Same with the O'Connell pick, who's gone onto solidify his place in a starting NFL unit after his selection?. Then your moaning about a "decent" 4th round selection? Just what the hell are your expectations?
