re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)
I've long been an advocate of the view that cap money is fungible. But the Patriots don't have infinite maneuvering room. Several of our moves (The Randy Moss restructuring in particular) were sub optimal in terms of moving cap space into future years.
As far as Haynesworth goes, the biggest component of his compensation is an option bonus which will be paid out of 2010 dollars. This technique will work well for reducing the size of new contracts, but it won't manufacture additional cap space.
Throw the cap out the window. Teams find a way to sign anybody they want. How come nobody is questioning how the Redskins were able to afford the ridiculous contracts they threw at Haynsworth and Hall? They didn't have that much more cap space than the Pats at the start of free agency.
