I hate Brett Favre.

I always had, and then 2007 came around and I loved Greg Jennings (as some might know in here as I have talked the Jackson over Jennings thing to death) and kind of liked the packers, and started to appreciate what Favre had done throughout his career.
Then 2008 came around and I hated him again.

If Favre had stayed retired the jets never would have gotten rid of Pennington. The fish would have been very mediocre and won maybe 7-8 games, the jets would have been mediocre and won 8 games. We would have won the division and been in the playoffs. And, as we all saw they really were as wide open as we thought.

BUT, if it weren't for Favre, Cassel would not have had his coming out party. For me, it was a lot earlier in the season that I knew Cassel had what it took be a starting NFL QB. It was week five (game 4) vs the 9ers. But, the braintrust still kept the shackles on my man Matt Cassel (for those that have heard it's either the national or st louis radio call of sb36 you know where I'm getting that phrase from ). That comeback agains the jets was things legends are made of. That throw to Randy was amazing, still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. I mean, really, was there one play that you were more excited about in 2007?!? Maybe Gaffney's td against the ravens, but I still think that play was the most exciting play in a non-Super Bowl season. After that jets game the offense was Cassel's. Take a look at something Reiss posted the other day:

Patriots blog - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com
SHOTGUN SPARKED CASSEL'S RISE: Greg Cosell of NFL Films, writing for the Sporting News, details how the shotgun formation sparked Matt Cassel's success in 2008. Writes Cosell: "What the Patriots learned as the season progressed was that Cassel was far more comfortable and relaxed playing in the shotgun. Their overtime loss to the Jets in mid-November solidified that belief. The Patriots fell behind 24-6 in the second quarter, and from that point on, Cassel was exclusively in the shotgun. That defeat was the first of six consecutive games in which 88 percent of Cassel's pass attempts came out of the shotgun."

So, if we get a first round pick+ for Cassel, maybe we should be thanking Favre for doing his part.

you make a GREAT point about the excitement of that Randy Moss td. I was thinking about that play too. Even though we didn't get to linger in the excitement (due to the events in OT), that was a such a great moment.

As far as great plays in non-Super Bowl winning seasons, another nomination would have to be the bomb that Moss caught against the Giants in week 17 last year to put the Pats on top for good. If you remember, Moss dropped a long, underthrown ball on the play before.

But the original poster was right, that play against the Jets brought such a geniune excitement that brings me back to the OT victory at Miami (83 yard TD bomb to Troy Brown).

Unfortunately the change I made to your post is another reason but I would rather thank Favre than Brady in this situation

So the D plays horrible besides Mayo and it is all Brett Farve that gets the credit for Cassel playing great. I think Pats were trying to win the game and they went to a formation that gave them the best chance to win.

Down 24-6 I don't think your lining up in an I formation.

ya, I agreed with the feel good Cassel moment, but I honestly still don't understand what it has to do with Brett Favre.
