Martinez is a guy that seems like he knows what Brady is all about and when it comes to getting back to basics he expects Brady's performance in the early going in 2009 to look similar to Manning after his knee surgery and maybe start off a bit erratic and unbrady-like early but should be back to his old form later on.

My hope is that Brady is able to actually MAKE IT on the field in the early going,I really don't care if he sucks a bit early,I just want him back on that field, erratic and rusty or not its better than nothing

Nice little article by our own Chris Price

Nice read, thanks for the link.

I like the last paragraph:
“The surgery was to his knee. It was not on his heart or his brain. They didn’t operate on those. He’s a winner, one of the better winners of all time,” Martinez said. “I would say that the guy who got hurt in Game 1 last year is coming back with the same heart, determination, mind and attitude.”

And since unlike Manning, Brady missed games in the season before, he should also be a prime candidate for Comeback Player of the Year. Has anyone ever won both awards before?

NOOOOO. Remember the curse of the NFL MVP? Peyton can have all the MVPs. All we want is rings.

I like the last paragraph:

I don't. That sounds like a guy whose making the determination based on the wrong things.

Go ahead. Continue the hate.

Re: Tom Martinez "Brady will struggle early,But he'll succeed"

There is no reason to think his early play will be like Manning's as long as he is back at somepoint during camp. Remember Manning had his knee surgery at the end of July and then had it cleaned out again just a couple weeks before the opening game. He had no camp and minimal practice going into the season. Hell he just had his stitches removed days before he played, so he definitly didn't do any rehab.

Brady had/has 11 months to recover from a surgery that usually takes 4-6 months to recover from.

Not sure why people can't understand the difference between the two.

To take it one step further: Rivers had surgery in January and practiced at mini-camp in June. Palmer had knee surgery in January and played in a pre-season game in August. Palmer had a torn ACL/MCL and a dislocated knee cap.

Brady will play during camp unless he had the worst knee operation in history. Dr James Andrews believes that he will be fine and that his doctor is competent.

You just don't understand....

You see, players from OTHER teams are allowed to be injured and play less than 100% effectively, and they can also be expected to be better than ever when they return. Patriots players aren't given any quarter no matter how well verified an injury is and, once a Patriots player is injured, he might as well be tossed into the garbage.

I hope this helps you to better understand the situation.

I get it and I am forlorn.

Re: Tom Martinez "Brady will struggle early, but he'll succeed"

How in the world can Tom Martinez know how Brady will perfom 8 months from now? Does he have the winning lotto numbers too? Or is he just playing PR? </rhetoricalQuestion>

Yeah, but haven't you heard how devastating ACL injuries are to QBs. Palmer sucked the year he came back from his ACL surgery...and threw for 4000 yards. Rivers totally blew this year....by having by far his best season of his career. Just devastating stuff. These guys are never the same....

My bad.

Go ahead. Continue the hate.

Its got nothing to do with hate.

Its got everything to do with judging a player on projections, models, and actual information, instead of "he has heart"

How old was Rivers? How Old was Palmer?

How old is Brady?

How old is Brady?

Palmer was 27 and Rivers was 26. Brady is 31.

Not sure what your point is? Its not as though Palmer and Rivers were 18 or 20 and Brady is pushing 40.

"Having heart" is why we watch the game. The other stuff you mention is meaningless when the game is on. I love to watch great players overcome adversity and I love the NEP.

Rock on with the doomsday end-of-the-world thing but I think I'll struggle through rooting for the best team (and QB) in football for the last 15 years.

Projections: I project that Brady will throw for aproximately 3700 yards, 24-32 TD's, and either 12 or 14 Int's in 2009. Based on his career stats with a little inflation due to Moss and Welker.

Models: Well he does have one of the hottest models on the planet.

Information: Dr James Andrews believes that he will recover to full health. That is the last bit of substantiated information available. **Update: Brady says his recovery is going really well.**

So after using Projections, Models and actual Information - I would say that Brady is doing damn well!

I'm pretty sure that whatever model the Patriots coaches are using to assess Brady when he's been declared 100% healthy, will give him reasonable opportunity to show he is able to play the way he is capable of. And IIRC character, "showing heart" is an essential part of that model for the Patriots.
