What's the deal with the Philly game postponement? (merged)

I'm 48 years old, have lived in New York a majority of my life (41 years), this is the worst blizzard I've ever seen. My company has asked a bunch of us to come to Jersey City to stay at a hotel, because they didnt think anyone can get to work tmorrow morning. it's not just the speed of the accumulation of the snow, it's the blinding 55 mph winds. I've never seen anything like it here in NY or NJ. Having to just walk through this stuff, bundled up, wAs incredibly difficult, I can't imagine trying to play through this. I'm upset too, I wanted to watch football tonight, but I completely understand.

All kidding aside, football is just a game, an entertainment venue. Big Eastern cities don't need road maintenance and public safety stressed even more by a game night crowd. People WILL make stupid and possibly fatal decisions. Good decision.

Due to weather conditions:mad: Brady never gets that luxury...

They are shutting down roads. Fans would die if they held it. Too bad as I wanted to see a snow game but they couldnt.

Re: Philly-Viking game postponed......

AAANNNDDDD ... they want to go to an 18 game season which will push the end of the regular season two weeks farther into winter.

It will not move the end of the season, the season will start two weeks sooner. I don't get how people don't understand that. They already play those two extra games, they are just preseason now.

I think people are grossly underestimating the size of this storm. By the time the snowfall stops this storm will drop at least 2 feet of snow where I am and that will be in a time span of about 18 hours. Winds will gust up to 65 MPH. Power will be lost in many areas (probably mine, *again*).

It takes quite a lot more than 2 teams to show up to have a football game. There are a lot of workers that need to brave the elements as well as players, news crews and fans. Right now most of New England is declaring a state of emergency and shutting down airports. I know Logan has canceled almost all flights. The DMV is begging drivers to stay off the roads both for their own safety but also to help out the snow plows so that those roads can stay clear for emergency vehicles.

Oh and did I mention that the news reported "thunder snow" nearby? I lived for years in Minnesota and this was the first time I've ever even heard of such a thing! If things in Phillie are even close to this, they won't be able to handle it simply because they won't be prepared for the snow removal and won't be able to ask for help from surrounding areas.

Jeez, some of you are reading way too much into this. They moved the game because they don't want thousands of people getting stuck in the snow. Whenever there's a major snow storm like this they tell people not to travel unless it's really necessary. It's going to be a pain in the arse getting around as it is; having a zillion cars in the area isn't going to help. Anyone who has ever tried getting out of a game in any kind of weather knows how frustrating it can be, let alone with blizzard conditions.

We had a storm like this across the whole state a couple weeks ago and there were literally people stuck in their cars on the freeway for 24 hours. If they think that could happen in PA, I don't blame them one bit.

I seriously, seriously doubt this has anything to do with spite against the Patriots or favoritism towards Vick and/or the ol' hillbilly. Rescheduling a major event like this is a pain, I'm sure they wouldn't do it if they didn't have to.

Re: Philly-Viking game postponed......

I agree.......

Snow emergency or not.....the game should be played. Sorry, it's pro football and the game goes on. It sets up 4 day s rest going onto next weekends game, which really is crazy.

Goodell is out of control..........where do you draw the line now? Heavy rain which might mean flooding conditions for people driving. Or shapp we postpone it when temperatures rise above 100 degrees because there is a heat emergency with warnings?

Game should be on - period and goodell sucks.
Yep. I hate Goodell for this too. This game should be going on right now.

Play the fricken game..... We are missing out on an instant classic. 3-2 Vikes.
Why must we constantly ***** foot around with these things. A little natural selection might not be a bad thing for those Philly fans. Trim the herd and such......

Gentlemen - Having family who lives in Philly area, they were expecting a severe blizzard. The news was telling people, today, to expect a State of Emergency and no one to be allowed on the roads in the Philly area. I would not be surprised if the Governor of PA or the Mayor of Philly asked the NFL to postpone the game because of that.

Also, I've not heard from my family there, so they may have lost power as well.

While I agree that football is an outdoor sport, in our SUE HAPPY society, I am certain that some ambulance chasing lawyer would find a way to sue the NFL, the Eagles and the Vikings if a fan got in an accident on the way to or from the game.

Re: Philly-Viking game postponed......

Can we stop the dying fans drama?? This is football and its always been played in bad weather. I don't recall any game where "fans died" trying to get to or from it.

Sack up and play the game.

There have been plenty of people who have died in car accidents after games. Maybe you should come out from your basement and realize that there is a real world out here.

a blizzard is NOT a snowstorm...it's a SEVERE weather event...roads closed means game postponed 100% of the time

AN 18 game season won't push the end of the regular season farther into winter. Seriously. Get caught up on events. An 18 game season has the regular season starting 2 weeks earlier because there would be 2 less pre-season games.

Re: Philly-Viking game postponed......

Nice try..they have to fly, not drive.

You really aren't too bright, are you? Did you ever stop to think that the SNOW affects airplane travel as well??? Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Logan and Providence were shut down. OH.. not to mention that it's a 45 min drive by bus/car from the airport to Foxboro when it's GOOD weather..

Re: OT: What's the deal with the Philly game postponement?

Considering the city declared snow/weather emergencies, it's not just your typical winter storm.

I don't mind the NFL re-scheduling the game, but I'm totally against it being moved to Tuesday. Moving it from Sunday due to emergency weather conditions is one thing. Moving it to Tuesday so it doesn't inconvenience ESPN is unacceptable.

The BLizzrd isn't going to stop Sunday night. It's supposed to carry through most of Monday as well..

The storm warning is until 1 pm tomorrow, but the majority of the snowfall should be tonight. I'm sure the league will say it's for everyone's safety to push an extra day, but I'm a bit skeptical.

As of 11 pm EST Sunday night, the Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory had been extended through 7 pm EST Monday.

I live in Charlestown along the coast of R.I.

I got 13 inches of snow and winds blowing a consistent 40 knots...I've been running errands for the local senior center all day and there's nothing moving on the roads except for plows

This game should have been played as scheduled. The NFL has set a very BAD precedent. They are on a slippery slope where the bright red line for EMERGENCIES and just a regular blizzard has been badly blurred.

The Pats played in Chicago a couple of weeks ago in 40 miles/hour wind and blowing snow.

To his credit, Governor Ed Randell of Pennsylvania was in favor of playing the game. He is reported to have said that Lombardi would be turning in his grave.

Goodell and his minions panicked. The same bureaucrats who want to have a SuperBowl at Giants Stadium panicked.

Where did you get the information that the season would start two weeks earlier? I've found more articles/speculation saying the season would be pushed further into winter (as WhoaDirty posted), resulting in the Super Bowl being played on President's Day weekend (which is something the NFL has talked about in the past).

Danny...this is from Bleacher Report

As part of the new NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, the league may add two more regular season games, increasing the season to 18 games.

To keep from extending the season any further into February, the league would cut the preseason in half, from four games to two.

Overall, the players still would have to play 20 games before the postseason.

Thanks. Bleacher Report is a fan site though... anyone can write on there. That article is from June too. Here's something from August:
