Kraft Needs to Back Mayo With His Wallet

Was there any doubt we are gonna spend huge this year?

Depends on what you mean by spend huge. There are nearly zero long term contracts with cap dollars pushed into the future. Those sort of contracts require more cash upfront which I doubt kraft wants to spend.

I don't get this. All teams have to spend to the cap, aggregated over a number of years. And cash spend and cap spend equal out, also aggregated over a number of years. So when Kraft if being accused of being cheap, isn't it just a matter of not wanting to borrow from the future by giving out rich back ended contracts?

The open question is how much Kraft is willing to defer into future years. As of now, the patriots defer much less than most.

This is the issue whether we are discussing free agents or extensions. A $20M AAV player can easily be only $7M under the 2024 cap, or even less.

This is correct - will the Pats defer to effectively have more cap dollars. Deferring usually means a higher contract value which usually means more upfront money. Traditionally Kraft does not want to spend more upfront dollars.

That's why his "being a fan"has been ******** all along. The Patriots are second fiddle to $$$.

As I have said both here and on Reddit, if you want to say Kraft and/or the Patriots are reluctant/unwilling to write huge checks to individual players, that's a perfectly valid criticism.

But it's not reasonable to say that they're "cheap" and trying to pocket salary cap cash. At no point have they elected to use the one means they have for keeping salary cap cash (not rolling over leftover cap space). [It should also go without saying that the teams that have the highest cash spending over the last couple of years also have the least free cap space over the next couple of years; it feels sometimes like some folks want the Patriots to both spend the most and have the most cap space in future years. . . .]

The Pats spend to the cap usually. Kraft is not cheap in that way. BB never had a large staff and you have to wonder how much of that was Kraft's influence.

I don't think anyone thinks the Pats can spend a lot and have a lot of cap space. The questions are 1. do you spend before you have a QB, and 2. how much spending do you push into future cap years.

Tom Brady, Joe Thuney, Trent Brown (the '19 version), Ted Karras, Danny Shelton, Chris Long, Malcom Brown, Trey Flowers, Kyle Van Noy... Etc.

Shelton, M. Brown, Flowers at those huge dollars, and Van Noy who was cut after one year at the Dolphins? Pass, pass, pass, and pass. You are really stretching it to make a point.

The question remains, would you be willing to shell out big bucks for these guys?
I guess we are discussing two different issues. Both are improtant.

ISSUE ONEr
How much of our annual cap should be paid to top players making say $15M AAV or more.

ISSUE TWO
How much compensation should deferred, allowing us to spend lots more in the current year, whether that money is spent on extensions, trades, $15M plus free agents or on mid-level free agents ($5M-$10M AAV).

Only Flowers got big time money. rest of the contracts were more than manageable.

the point is this - if you don't reward your own players who have done well, whats their motivation to do well?

No one said he was special. That’s why he didn’t receive special money. Every team needs specialists like him though. Dependable, team first ballers that just keep their head down and play. Would’ve preferred JM over Jump Ball Parker. Always injured, not dependable. Especially after KB went down. Myers would’ve been nice to have and moved the chains a bit more than JJSS, that’s a guarantee.

@Pape said he was special. And if you disagree, Pape will insult you. Can you imagine getting so worked up over J Meyers? Hilarious.

And the guys were average to below average, and had very little impact in the league after they left. YAGs.

role players and depth are important. instead we replace them with guys like carl davis and beau whatever his last name was - the one who never played...

quality depth is worth keeping around. not a hard concept to understand

It is hard for me to understand because my IQ is much lower than yours.

sometimes concepts are hard to understand. keep trying one day you might get it.

Karen Guregian wrote an interesting article, linked below... I encourage you all to read it...

I agree with this. If there are free agents (ours or theirs) who are worth the investment, pay them... It was disappointing to read that the team wasn't going to try and re-sign Michael Onwenu... We made the huge mistake last year by not retaining Jakobi Meyers... Can't let missed opportunities become the modus operandi under Mayo like it was under BB... That was a cardinal sin by BB - not rewarding his own players for great play... Drove me crazy to see talent walk out the door over minimal dollars when viewed over the full term of their new contracts

A teams willingness to pay players makes them more attractive to free agents... We've had a rough time attracting free agents in part due to the teams fiscal conservitity...

Not saying we have to go out and overspend, but we gotta put some lipstick on the pig at some point... Onwenu & Henry should be first in line...

Onwenu deserves a second contract... We have to break the chain of not rewarding our home grown talent... Henry deserves a new deal... He's stepped up into a leadership role, and has put forth tremendous effort on the field (why some of you are dismissive of his game is beyond me), more than enough to warrant a new deal...

Time to hit it in free agency... We don't have the luxury of picking over the remains of day three in free agency looking for the diamond in the rough...

And in order to do that, Kraft does indeed have to "open his wallet"

Time for the Patriots Organization to be players, not wallflowers

This was always an issue I had with Belichick, by all available accounts when it came time for a new contract Belichick would be really negative with the player, focusing on anything he could tear them down with. And when you think of the physical sacrifices these guys make it has to suck to go into a negotiation, knowing you have been giving it everything you have, and to have all of the focus on on tearing you down. He was a total prick to guys like Seymour, Welker, and Edelman, and they embodied everything you would want from a player. I realize that he had to make good deals with players to make it work under the cap, but you don’t have to be a total bastard to do it. I think they will find it easier to keep and attract free agents with Mayo running things.

Ivan, I agree.

for a better understanding about why they didn't resign so many talented players, you'd better ask @One-If-By-Sea I'm sure he can explain the ins and outs of financial rewards vis-a-vis roster building and the effects it has on team morale when a franchise rarely signs players who have earned it thru hard work to a second contract.

The Pats total spend is near the bottom of the league, has been for years.

On pace for 29th in the league this year. 28th last year. 27th the year before. 28th the year before that.

We'll know a lot after 2024 when we see the respective balance sheets of the Falcons and Patriots to see who was the culprit.

They were first in cash spending in 2021.
