Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

No. BB drafted him in 2000, actually. The only underclassman that BB drafted until he took Wilfork in 2004.

Ok - makes a bit more sense... seemed weird that he'd go back to someone else's guy.

I always liked Pass - he filled in nicely as the RB in a few contests. But, to say I think he'll be a difference maker is the biggest overstatement in the history of Earth.

Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

Hmmm ... Pass must have given up the booze ... too late for him IMO.

Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

Why does everyone focus on a bad play when the guy had innumerable good plays here from 2000-2006? Go back and watch the 2004-2005 AFCCG at Pittsburgh and watch who throws the key block on Corey Dillon's long TD run in the second half.

He was a good player who played a lot of roles and had one terrible play people remember. Everyone says "the coaches hated him".....based on what? One anecdote in a Michael Holley book. He happened to be there for that one. How many has he not been there for over the years for other players? **** happens. Stuff gets said. Doesn't mean that is the end all be all of their opinion because a reporter happened to hear 1% of the comments that were said 7 years ago. He caught Weis on a frustated day. But guess what? Pass was on the team 7 straight years, earning increasing playing time as he went along, and was a 3 time Super Bowl winning player. Now they have re-signed him. Doesn't sound like they "hate" him to me, whether Weis had a frustrated day in 2002 7 years ago with him or not.

Why fans would laugh at and disparage a guy who was a key role player on numerous championship teams, the best teams in the history of the franchise they are supposedly fans of, is beyond me.

J D Sal

I'm a fan of his, too. I think the 2005 version of Pass adds more to the team than Green-Ellis, but considering he's barely played since then it's tough to say what the 2009 version adds. Hopefully he's still got something left.

Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

Boy - anyone wondering why Belichick would bring back Patrick Pass hasn't been paying attention.

Belichick has always been pretty open about the amount of respect he has for Pass
Just because BB has respect for a guy doesn't mean he's going to bring the guy back. He respects Rodney and didn't bring him back. He respects Vrabel and got rid of him. There are many, many guys guys that BB cut or let go that he publicly thought extremely highly of, much more so than Pass.

Besides, when did all this supposed BB praising of Pass take place? I've been paying attention and I don't recall BB praising Pass.

Add : BB was tripping over himself in praising Lynch last year, but didn't even chose him for the 53-man roster. Respect is great, but BB always makes decisions on logic.

Having said that - I agree with an earlier poster : 2005 Pass IS better than Green-Ellis... but what does 2009 Pass add ?

Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

...''but Coach Belichick...I felt my hammy twinge...I HAD to throw the ball on the ground while the play was still live..."

Patrick Pass?.....meh

Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

No? Maybe we were just paying attention to different things. Like how Pass has been floating around unsigned for years, and the Pats didn't call even when BJGE was the only RB the team could roll out for weeks on end. He hasn't suited up since 2007. I have nothing against Patrick, but this signing certainly counts as...unusual.

Honestly, when I saw the thread title I initially assumed it was one of those things where a spambot dredges up a random ancient thread.

Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

If our 4 RBs are healthy he gets cut. If anyone goes down, he'd be pretty damned handy. He's pretty much a backfield Swiss Army knife.

Run, receive, FB, KR special teams. He's done all well when needed. None well enough to start, obviously.

1) Belichick has always been pretty open about the amount of respect he has for Pass - how he's a player no one thinks much of and then one day you look up and he's been in the league for 10 years..

2) How Pass in his heyday just a few years back was an every down player... third down back, first and second down back, special teams player, kick returner

3) He was pushed out by Evans and his better days are behind him to be sure, but what's wrong with bringing him into camp... at the very least he's a good example to the younger guys about how a 7th round pick can work hard, earn the respect of Belichick and have a long and productive career.

You are giving Pass way, Way, WAY too much credit here.

1) Pass hasn't been in the league close to 10 years, even if Bill did say what you claim he said.

2) An every-down player? That's a joke. For a couple of games in 2005, he was the starting Running Back, and an effective one, too, until he quit on the ball - and therefore on the team - against Buffalo.

3) What's wrong with bringing him to camp? Everything. At the very least, he's a bad example to the younger guys. And a "productive career"? Are you serious? There are FBs available - Cecil Sapp, Andrew Pinnock, Brannan Southerland, for ex. - who have/could have more productive careers than this bum. He isn't worth the tree that was killed so that the paper on which his contract was printed could be made.

So many FBs with actual talent who were available, for prob. their vet minimum, and Bill signs this has-been. Un-effin-believable.

Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

The Omar Cuff era ended quickly.

Spacecrime? Spacecrime!

How 'bout this!

Oh, boy, it's PATRICK PASS.

Bring it, space, bring it!

(Man, those were some good times, even if they were more than 3 years ago. :D)

Redemption!

Pass drafted in 2000. So unless you aren't counting the years he was out of the league, he has been "in the league" for 10 seasons.

Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

Wow, Chris - You gotta love Belichick. The dude's mind works in mysterious ways.

This might be one of the weirest moves of the off season, IMHO.

Every recently retired/cut Patrirot just jumped off the couch, ran to Sports Authority and are currently buying a Ab machine and Solofex....waiting on the phone to ring.

I'll agree, this is one the weirdest roster moves I've seen the Pats make in a while. Caught me off guard.

Re: WEEI.com: The Return of Patrick Pass

I'll never forget that fumble. The worst ever.

I can't believe Pass will make the roster.

The hamstring fumble?

I'll happilly accept your view as valid if you've ever suffered a dislocated hamstring - or been shot in the back of the leg - and been able to continue focusing on what you were doing without wincing in severe pain and reaching back to grab your leg.

But most people I've talked to who view this fumble in this way HAVEN'T been shot in the leg or suffered a traumatic hamstring injury.

While hamstring injuries aren't exactly rare, not all are complete tears - and most that I recall among football players are wide receivers who "tweak" the hamstring and pull up lame well before the ball is in their hands.

I'd be amazed if anyone could be shot in the leg or suffer that sort of injury and NOT fumble the ball.

There've been quite a few interviews on WEEI over the past years where Belichick has literally waxed poetic about Pass - and all that he can do and the multiple roles he fills.

I think he seems to take great pride in making a point of publicly recognizing the contributions of underrated players who are hard workers.

Over the years there were countless times that he talked about Pass' versatility and how much he prized players like that and how he viewed him as a likely 10 year player (that was probably back in 2006 or so - maybe even when he cut him.)

Do I think he should have cut Heath Evans and kept Pass back then? Nope.

But do I understand why Belichick would bring him back into camp now, if only to set the tone with the rookies, UFAs and late round choices?

Yup.

You really need to put down the dope and let your brain heal. Pass was drafted in 2000. This is 2009. That is 10 years.

I love how people make up this BS about Pass "giving up on the ball" when his hamstring got hurt. This is just proof that you've never had that sort of injury in your life and, therefore, have no perspective. And yes, I said it back then as well.

3) What's wrong with bringing him to camp? Everything. At the very least, he's a bad example to the younger guys. And a "productive career"? Are you serious? Really? Sapp, Pinnock nd Southerland have all had better careers than Pass? Care to PROVE it? Because I'd bet they haven't. In fact, none of them have a SB ring. Pass has 3. And he was an integral part of those 3 teams.

Cecil Sapp hasn't done anything in his career. Neither has Pinnock. Southerland? You'r pulling names out of your arse there.

I'll let others critique your math skills and ability to count to 10 seeing as Pass was drafted in 2000 (though I think BB said he wouldn't be surprised to see Pass play 10 years when he cut him)

And I do tend to think that NFL Coaches - especially Bill Belichick, don't keep guys employed for 10 years who they don't view as "productive"

If a bad example is a 7th round player who is versitle enough to play 10 years as FB, KR, RB, ST, catch passes, block etc. etc.., - well then I'll take a dozen more "bad examples" on the Patriots.

As far as being an every down player, let's see what Belichick has to say about that:

Bill Belichick said:
Patrick really has played every down for us. He's been a third down back. He's been a first and second down back and he's been a productive special teams player for us on fourth down. He's returned kicks. Even though they're similar, I think there are definitely some differences. He's been a kick returner. He's been a third down back. Those are things that Heath probably hasn't done as much of. He's probably done a little bit more in-line blocking than Patrick, although Patrick has done some of that, too.

What an amusing thread.

Belichick signs an ex-player to the 92 man squad and people go ballistic.

For the record, I don't think that Pass is making this team. Also, I would prefer Pass to Green-Ellis.
