Last week Thomas Dimitroff's name came up in conversation about the "GM" spot... found out that he is out of football now, and is heading up a sports analytics site, Sumner Sports... Took a look around their site, and damn, its pretty good...

Came across an article there that really digs into the X's & O's of the Shanahan system... the play concepts are explained, the play diagram is provided and a link is embedded so you can see the play in an in-game situation... Its a fantastic break down of what he does, and after reading it, really helps understand why his offense is so successful...

The article is a loooong read, but if you are interested in the X's & O's, its is definitely worth taking the time and going thru it... Have read it once, and really, I need to re-read it with a more in-depth focus, there's just so much stuff...

was hoping to find a real in depth look at both the McVay system & Erhardt/Perkins ... haven't come across anything that really piqued my interest, but if I do I will post them as well

Thanks.

I know that most here want to resign Onwenu and on the face of it that makes sense, given his production and versatility in the Patriots offense

BUT if they are truly committed to transitioning to a Shanahan-style offense, His body type and relative lack of athleticism are not what you want in an OG or OT. That could explain Fowler’s report that they are expected to let him walk in free agency.

Strange has been a punching bag for many Patriots fans since the moment that he was drafted, but he is the prototypical OG for that system, which is why the Rams liked him (3rd round blah, blah, blah…STFU) and why Shanahan was very high on him, commented shortly after the draft that you’re not going see many OGs with a first step as quick as his.

If you want the Patriots to succeed and they transition to this type of offense, you should be praying that Strange makes a full recovery in time for the start of 2024.

The other thing that is clear, based upon all of the articles that I’ve read about the system is that a team absolutely has to have OL coaches who are well-versed in the offense with years of experience coaching it.

"(The complexity rises when you get into) are you running a full-flow to the tight end with the fullback? Are you running split-flow to the tight end with the fullback going the opposite way? Are you running to the open side with the fullback?

"In addition to that, every one play is actually two because you’re coaching the front side and the back side. Center and guard have to communicate, guard and tackle have to communicate, tackle and tight end have to communicate. And then there’s 36 minimum basic fronts that involve different two-man combination calls. So if defenders ‘mug and bug’ bringing linebackers up you can potentially turn that into a three or four-man combination play. Communication on the line just for that -- we aren’t even discussing 11 personnel or 10 personnel motions and shifts -- is a whole entire language."

Thanks.

Can we FT and trade Onwenu? We wouldn't need two first rounders...but say a 3rd...to get "an advance" on our comp pick?

BB tried installing this offense.

Started drafting offensive players versed in this type of scheme like Strange.

Yet you were one of Bill's strongest backers when he annointed Fat Matt as the OC/OL coach to teach it. Lol

Being realistic here, a new QB, existing mediocre OL and WRs, a new OC, likely new WR and TE coaches, likely new OL coach, plus a completely new complex system that they already tried and failed with (admittedly lacking coaches with experience in the system) means we have to have very limited offense expectations for year 1 and maybe even year 2.

If Purdy and SF can beat KC the Pats are on the right track.

That’s fine, provided the foundation is built based on that and it works. The 49ers had to build a similar foundation. They went 2-14 in 2016 with little talent, fired their coach, and started 2017 0-9 in Shanahan’s first year. They finished 6-1, started 1-1 in 2018 but then Jimmy G tore his ACL and they finished 4-12, and then took off in 2019 and haven’t looked back. Obviously the key here is having the right people; the 49ers clearly know what they’re doing, so much so that they’re able to withstand their major 1st round draft whiffs (Solomon Thomas, Trey Lance).

its not about today, but tomorrow...

If the Shanahan system is the path forward, there will be growing pains... but as you start looking for guys to fill out the roles needed to make the outside zone work, the better you will get...

adding this to the mix... A primer on the McVay system... not quite as detailed, but it is a pretty good examination of what he's currently running... this should be of interest, considering Caley has to be the leader in the clubhouse for the OC position...

What's interesting is those gap schemes like Duo are a lot closer to what we've been using. So maybe this is the best fit for us, with the easiest transition.

Absolutely was thinking the same thing.
