A theory for discussion: BB interest in Peppers a ruse?

No way is this a ruse. Bill Belichick LOVES Julius Peppers. I went back to the Carolina game in 2005 to see what he thought of him, and this is what I found. If you don't want to read all of it, he basically thinks Peppers is the Randy Moss of Defense, and even makes comparisons between him and Lawrence Taylor. Now add 4 more years of experience.

Q: They didn’t seem to move Peppers around much.
BB: I don’t think they need to move him. He causes plenty of problems where he is. He’s a hard guy to deal with. He’s hard to run at. He’s hard to throw at. That’s where most of the right-handed quarterbacks have to throw, into that left side. He’s a factor there one way or the other. Because the offense usually extends a little bit to try to take care of him, they like to bring to the linebackers and blitz them up inside, whether it’s [Will] Witherspoon or Morgan or [Brandon] Short, whoever it is. So, as the line widens, to take Peppers and give attention to Peppers, that opens up a lot of the inside pressures for them. So, they do a good job of that. He’s a good player. We talked about last week [Randy] Moss being kind of in a special category offensively for the Raiders. I think you have to put Peppers in that same, whatever category that is, defensively. You have to know where he is every play. If they move him, they move him. If they don’t, sometimes they drop him. Sometimes they stunt him. A lot of times when they move him, they move him after the snap. In other words, the ball is snapped and he’s stunts down inside or he’s on a gain or something like that. It’s not like he doesn’t move off of that spot. But, for the most part, he does align there. At times he reduces down. But for the most part, he is on that tackle.

Q: What about when he was at receiver? Didn’t they throw him a couple of jump balls in the corner of the end zone last year?
BB: Yes. Well, he has played tight end.

Q: What do you do there?
BB: It’s hard. He’s a hard guy to match up against. The guy could probably play… he certainly could play outside linebacker. We know he can play defensive end. I imagine he could probably move inside and play defensive tackle. There's no question he could play tight end. He probably could play offensive tackle. He's 290-something pounds. You're talking about a guy that could probably play six or seven positions on the field. That's pretty unusual.

Q: How has Julius Peppers improved in since you last played him in the Super Bowl?
BB: Well, we played him last year in the preseason. So, we got a good look at him down there too. He played a lot in that game. I think he is essentially the same player, but he is more experienced, he reads some plays quicker, reacts quicker, and uses his hands. He used them well, but he's even improved on that. He's a hard guy to fool and even if you do get him out of position a little bit, he's such a great athlete, he has a lot of speed and power that he can recover very quickly. Again, it's different, but similar to coaching a player like Lawrence Taylor who, in all honesty, was out of position quite a bit, but he was such an exceptional athlete and was so fast and explosive, even though he was out of position, he could recover and still get back in on the play, which most players really can't do, or they can't do it as well as he could. Peppers is a little bit in that category. He makes a lot of plays and then there's times when he is a little bit out of position, but he recovers very quickly.

Q: How does he influence what an offense does?
BB: Well, I think you have to account for him every play. You have to know where he is. He can ruin the game. Just like he did with the Giants. He ruined [Eli] Manning for about a month, too. He went in there, they had him double teamed, he blew past the tackle, strip sacked the ball and messed up Manning's elbow, scooped it up and ran in for a 60-yard touchdown. It doesn't get any worse than that. But, that is the kind of play he can make. And he was supposed to be doubled on the play, too. He's an impact player. You have to know where he is. You have to defend him. He beat us inside on a rush down there in the preseason game last year, I don't know, for about a 15, 17-yard sack, whatever it was. We don't have any quarterbacks that can run away from him. I can tell you that. If he's after us, he's going to get us. He's a lot faster than we are.

Beautiful quotes. Comparing Peppers to Randy Moss and Lawrence Taylor shows how high BB must think of him - that doesn't just sound like hyperbole, and Belichick isn't given to hyperbole anyway. If BB sees Peppers as an "impact player", as he describes him, then he'll find a way to use him as an impact player on the Pats. I'm sure he would move Peppers around using multiple schemes to create maximum havoc. Imagine what he could do along with Adalius Thomas and Mayo.

Ah yes - the patsfans.com BB is a mad scientist playing puppet master to the entire NFL theory.

I'm going to go with this one. After all, the last two times this board told me he pulled this were having Brady fake injuries - in the 2008 preseason and in the lead up to the Super Bowl and both times the mad scientist theory was true and Brady was fine.

You were forgot the one about how BB purposely got caught filming from the sidelines in order to make the NFL stop all teams from doing it.

No question about it. For one thing, the fact that Carucci would even mention the Pats infatuation with Maualuga is so un-BB like. Think about that for a minute. When is the last time the Pats let anyone, anyone even remotely know who they like or don't like in the draft unless they want people to think that way because as we've seen they like someone else.

Articles like this that come out from one of BB's inner circle writers have to make one wonder the real intentions.

I'm sure BB likes Peppers as a player.

Does he like him in the Patriots system as an OLB and a passing situations 4-3 DE while giving up the #34 pick and paying him a salary that will average 8M+/season? It's debatable and I can see arguments for both sides.

I do not however see an argument for BB and the Patriots being the ones who leaked this information. They like to keep everything a secret and that's how they keep other teams off balance.

I think this information either came from Pepper's camp trying to create a market or from Carolina, even though they are denying there have been talks, for the same reasons.

Yeah, those were classics. But this one has a subtle allure too. Think about it for a second: the theory is that BB is planting a rumor that Peppers can be had for dirt cheap (in draft pick terms), in order to convince someone else to overpay. Say wha'? It's like saying "Act now, a $25 value for only $49.99!"

You could be right on the ruse. Maybe BB is toying with Pepper to get Taylor. I don't think a division rival is in the mix for Peppers.

ruse........BB is a head coach and runs the whole operation with the pats.......

he doesn't have time to go around rusing others

No he doesn't.

He also doesn't have time to go around shooting down every agent floated rumor linking a player to the Pats. His indifference and silence on that stuff is exactly why agents do it every offseason and every year at draft time. It is just that around here people like to imagine that it is BB behind the scenes carefully pushing buttons and making everyone do whatever he wants.

So, wait......

Does this mean that Oswald didn't act alone?

It's all Ernie Adams...

It's all Ernie Adams...

Well he was heavily recruited by the NSA and BlackWater before deciding on sticking with BB. Ernie's got his hands in all kinds of black bag jobs.

Maybe we're entering into an NBA-like situation, where Carolina doesn't care about cap space--they're just trying to reduce payroll. Their owner is having some serious health issues, and maybe they just want to improve their cash flow in 2009. With Jake at QB, they're not going anywhere with or without Peppers, so why not move him for whatever they can get, and net out a $15M or so savings in payroll? There are a lot of teams that are way under the cap, and I'll bet a lot of those teams are going to stay that way.

I think it's pretty well established that not only does BB have time for it, he recognizes the entire chess game that goes on by teams providing information and misinformation about draft and free agency moves, and the value to HIS team in doing so.

That, some believe, as stated before, is what happened to prompt the Jets to expend two 1st round draft picks to move up and take Dewayne Robertson, who some look at as a bust at #4 in that draft.

There's of course never any proof of that, as confirming such things would never be done - but generally it's acknowledged that these sort of things go on in the NFL

sure.........in area 51

BB also showed the league a lesson when he moved up for chad jackson

you conspiracy theorists need to go watch more 'Lost' or something

Motivation for Vince to stay. Dangle Peppers out there. Force Vince to expedite the extension. There's only so much money to go around, create a sense of urgency when none exists.

A theory that NFL GMs like Belichick DON'T engage in schemes to inform and misinform to influence the decisions of other teams is the only conspiracy theory I'm aware of.

It's generally accepted as commonplace.

The problem with this theory is that in the past, he was inflating a players value. There is now way to inflate Peppers value. This guy is as solid as they come.
He isn't getting a team to take an overvalued draft pick ahead of him, thus leaving quality guys to slide.
Before you say that his salary would hinder a team... realize that BB could do NOTHING and some team would spend a ton of money on him. Heck, the Panthers already are.
Also, for a team to be a pure Patriots rival, they would ahve to be an AFC team at the least (AFC East is optimal) and as far as we know, the Pats are the only AFC team he would go to.
