Winovich in the dog house?

When the ball is being returned on an INT the QB like the 10 other guys who were just on offense become blockers. Wino barely touched James G. who flopped around like fish on the ground.
Qb is automatically considered a defenseless player on a turnover. Punter and kicker are at all times too.
part of the wussification of goodells nfl

and he clipped him too

Reiss kept digging and came up with some interesting insight including evidence. Nice job.

Also seems like whatever beat guy claimed that Winovich's final 4 snaps were on the final drive was wrong as he was back on the field for a snap soon after the blindside block.

That's why I'm thinking it's not necessarily a discipline issue.

They implemented a rule giving additional protection to the QB following an interception. Too many defenders were treating it like open season on QBs in those situations.

Pass rush specialist with few obvious passing down opportunities given the lopsided score and SF's run game domination.
Plus
He's too small vs the run

I have no problem with the NFL protecting QBs from blocks when they're making no effort to pursue the intercepting player. They're the most valuable assets in the league and nobody should be proud of going after a guy when he's already taken himself out of the play. The only reason you'd do it would be to hurt him. If he has a serious chance to make the tackle and he's actually trying to do so, then it should be open season.

I was highly encouraged by his play in the early goings, as he looked to be stronger and playing well against the run and as a pass rusher, but his play has dipped. I also feel they're not doing him justice when they kick him inside. I don't see why they do it so often. Maybe he's dominant in practice, but he hasn't been really good at it in games to this point.

I was wondering the same thing. Last week he didn't seem to play much then the same thing this week. I would guess it is because they thought that the 49ers were going to run so they used Copeland, Bentley, and Jennings but why not see if Wino could do something against the run? What did we have to lose? We were getting gashed against the 9ers 3rd string running back. Copeland is a special teamer and Jennings isn't ready yet. One would assume since Bentley is a complete liability in the passing game that he would be a better run LB but looked about as bad as he's been all year. I don't know why we need to overthink these things and why we can't put our 11 best players out there.

Copeland and Brooks are horrible. And Winovich is good against the run too

.

Belichick was just asked if the penalty had anything to do with Winovich's playing time, to which he gave a firm "no" response without any further explanation.

I wonder why. I did not think that he played bad. Was better than our other edge guys in my opinion. In the first games he was one of the best edge defenders in the league someone posted sth. about it in the Wino appreciation thread. He had almost a Sack yesterday where he went inside through an A gap i think. Our other Edge guys didn't play better

I think you nailed it. I am sure the earlier mistake Reiss pointed out helped with the hook as well. BB looks long-term and foolish penalties or a distracted player is something he does not tolerate. Be ready on game day and play smart or sit the bench.
Thats 2 boneheaded plays by Wino, one of which showed total lack of self-discipline (jg hit) and cost the team.
I never expected to see him again that game. But as pp2 pointed out, shanahans offense also requires more interior def. players, not his forte.
Probably a combo of all 3. Hopefully he learns, hes a talented player and we need him.
