If they don't move on from Zappe they are beyond incompetent. Sooner the better.
OK, who would you like the team to sign to be the backup for a few games, until Maye and the OL are ready?

The only reason to carry 4 is if we have other developmental guys working carrying. Have hopes for Drake but don't but stop looking for other guys. Jacoby may be the starter for the year and is the vet option if we need it (though i'd rather start Drake. So you carry a 3rd emergency guy who has upside and if you find another guy with upside you carry him too. right now there is no point carrying Zappa. Joe Milton is worth a look.
So, to be clear, if Brisette is injured who do you want to come in during the game? and who do you want to start?

OK, let's be a little real.

Milton is not ready to be our QB unless and until he is our emergency #3 with both Drake and Brissette playing. In that case, he doesn't count as active roster spot. If we want to use him as a player other than in emergencies that costs an active roster spot either early or lete in the year.

The OPEN question is whether the team is willing to have Drake as a backup on Game One. If not, there are three options.
1. Have Drake as the #2 and Milton as the emergency #3
2, Have Milton as the #2 and Drake as the emergency (OK if Milton is ready, which is very, very doubtful)
3. Have another QB as the #2 until Drake is ready for that role. This player can be the "4th QB" or Milton might be cut.
The obvious choice would be Zappe, although someone else could be signed (probably a waste for 1/2 season of need)

Maye had a worse line, worse coordinator, worse receiver at UNC and survived fine. He doesn't need to be "protected"
Miton won't be poached and will be on practice squad. There is a reason he was there in the 6th round.
Nobody is stealing him to put him on the roster.
They are absolutely not keeping 4 QB's on the roster.

When we cut down to 53, It's gonna be Brissette #1, Maye #2, Milton #3.

Zappe we're going to try to flip for a late round pick. If not we just waive him.

Roster spots are going to be at a premium. We've seen what Zappe can do and there just doesn't appear to be NFL level starting QB in him.

I would think Brissett and Maye on the 53 and Milton on the PS.

You're cool with Maye being thrown into the fire with an unproven OL if Brissette goes down in game one?
This site underestimates the NE OL. They would have been middle of the pack at worst last year,, except for the injuries. They had 7 different players with nearly 400 snaps, including a couple of rookies.

They had players in new positions.

Sow showed he has the goods, and now some expert. Onwenu has had some seasoning at RT. Okorafor was a starter in Pittsburgh until he mouthed off.

And the QBs sucked. Couldn’t see a blitz coming if the D put 11 on the line. Mac went into panic mode every time a blitz came, which encouraged more blitzes, to say nothing of a confused and badly coached WR group.

I want to see Maye sit for a while, too, but this “he’s going to die!” attitude is not logical.

I'd rather keep 6 WRs. If you're down to your 4th string QB, you dont have a prayer anyway. I think Milton will be #3 and Zappe will be one of the final cuts to get him into the PS like last year.

Trade Zappe for an 8th
