This brings up the larger issue of who controls the franchise. Now that the issues are real, obvious for all to see, and we haven’t had a playoff win in a handful of years, it’s likely the ownership exerts more control over what has been a nearly unprecedented amount of authority Belichick has had.
The first shot across the bow was after a string of disastrous drafts, the Krafts curtailed Bill picking dudes against the scouts’ recommendations. They understandably didn’t like spending millions on the scouting network only to have Bill supersede their recommendations. It became a failing policy.
The last two drafts were much better as a consequence.
It seems obvious to some of us the same curtailment of Bill’s authority will occur with the coaching staff. Hiring friends and family became damaging to the team.
Is this a hill Bill is prepared to die on? The team is not his. It’s Bob Kraft’s.
I’m thinking Belichick will retire from the Patriots at the end of the season because he won’t accept the interference from ownership.
He’ll look to explore other options, such as coaching another team.
