Wide Receivers For The Future?

Another guy who would be perfect in our system is Dwayne Bowe. Has the Size, Strength Hands, Vertical, Physicality, and red zone ability. He is also young and in his prime.

And like Marshall, he has work ethic issues. Big WRs with the required change of direction ability are rare, and it doesn't help that all of the ones that aren't locked up long term have big red flags.

I think you have something here:
...opportunities come up, you act on them, then move on to the next.
(stripped for clarity...)
It's the "Belichick Way".
In my humble estimation, BB will look to acquire talent on either side of the ball, at any time, when that talent (potential or proven) is available. Recent workout reports and signings will bear this out. Though many leave me perplexed (wr's and rb's? seriously??) nobody on the outside looking in could know why BB does what he does. My fortune to be a fly on the wall!
While we've seen the likes of Chad Jackson come and go (I was excited when he was drafted :bricks: ) we've also seen a likely hof receiver come for a few brilliant seasons, only to be jettisoned without mercy.
I've concluded that there's a head coach and infrastructure in Foxboro that I'll never remotely understand, one that makes calculated decisions that nearly always seem to work out, and to argue whether I agree or not is an ignorant assumption on my part. Glad I'm not a Boston beat reporter!
Bottom line is, I love the end result, year in year out. It's been a helluva ride so far... and it looks to be another brilliant campaign coming up!

BB hopefully will look into the nature of the "red flag", before summary judgement.
Many would say there's an enormous red banner waving on our DL currently.
As a fan, I say, "wait a while, we shall see".... but have some reservations about AH's desire, based on his recent resume.
What say you?

I don't think Tate is part of our future. I think he gets cut. He doesn't seem to progress as much as I think BB would like and just doesn't impress.

Price is definitely part of the future.

Edelman's future or lack thereof will be decided in 2012. Right now I believe we're holding onto him until Welker hits free agency next year. Welker is perfect for our system and he seems to fit perfectly with us, but I think some team may offer him money he can't refuse if he hits the open market and that's where Julian fits in. He's a serviceable replacement and would've been in the system for 2-3 years and should be a very clean transition in the case of Welker's departure.

Welker i think will be taken away from us in 2012 free agency.

Branch is gone in 2012 free agency as well. Thinks he's worth more then he really is just like before.

Ochocinco will be here for the 3 years he's signed to and will give us a year or 2 to replenish our WR corps through draft or free agency.

It's interesting how good RBs can always be obtained in later rounds, but the best WRs tend in come in the first. It would be nice to see New England take a chance on a first round WR. We should have drafted Hakeem Nicks in 2009...

I really want to see what Price can do. He seriously needs more playing time this season

Let's not jump off that bridge before we come to it.

The problem is the New England front office just won't pull the gun on a first round WR. They also seem to be allergic to pulling the trigger on a 6'3 + 210lb + wide receiver. There have been plenty of immensely big talented WRs come out of the draft with incredible physical tools that would thrive under Brady's arm, but the new england front office seems to prefer midgets(with the exception of Randy Moss and the infamous chad jackson).

I personally think getting a 6'4 220lb Brandon Marshall(not a deep threat, but a redzone thread and top notch possession receiver) would fit perfectly into the patriot's offense.

I don't think the problem is the front office not pulling the trigger; I think it is there aren't suitable targets.

The Pats are looking for guys who run routes well (or show in workouts that they can learn to do so). If you want a guy who all he can do is be tall and run fast down the sideline - well that isn't what BB /TB is looking for.

Unfortunatley coming out of college; most of these big tall guys HAVENT HAD TO LEARN TO RUN ROUTES. Most so outmatch the DBs physically that they can go on talent alone.

The one or two who can do both are top 10-20 draft picks; and BB has shown he doesnt value the WR position as highly as he rates a top half #1 draft pick. And I think that is entirely justified based on the Diva nature of the position and the bust rate of top picks for wrs.

BB is playing the odds of best AVG Net Return. On average he does better by getting vets with a track record or route runner draftees in later rounds. Taking a top 16 pick WR would be another all your money on 32 roulette play. Not BB's style.

I don't mean to sound critical, but it seems like out of all positions, wide receiver in the draft has been our worst. I don't know why our front office and BB has such trouble evaluating talent at WR, but it's come back to bite us in the ass a few times.

2003:

What were we thinking drafting Bethel Johnson over Anquan Boldin?(Bolding went 10 picks later)

2006: It still pains me to this day that we chose Chad Jackson over Greg Jennings. In fairness, at the time it seemed like a great pick.

2009: Selecting Brandon Tate over Mike Wallace. This one really stings. How badly would you guys want Mike Wallace on our team right now? He'd be the icing on the cake to our offense.

2010: Taylor Price over Mike Williams? Time will tell. I like Price a lot.

I don't mean to sound too critical, every front office has there mishaps. New England did draft a few good WR's like Deion Branch and David Givens. However, under BB's reign, we have not drafted one pro bowl WR. We have done a good job picking up established WR's Moss, Welker, Stallworth, Ochocinco.

It's the Pats curse. Way back in 1998 Tony Simmons was a 2nd round WR pick. We're cursed @ wideout. Our only decent 2nd round wideout left us in FA and we had to draft him AGAIN in the 4th. Time to quit the Pats and become a Jets fan I guess.

One answer is that our top receivers for the future (2012-2013) are Ochocinco, Price and Hernandez plus whatever free agent additions Belichick sees as necessary.

Plus I wouldn't be surprised to see Bill dip into the WR pool at next year's draft,
in addition to having Ocho, Price, Edelman & Hernandez (& maybe either WW or Branch).

Hopefully not Devier Possey. He is the Braylon Edwards of the Browns.
