Why did the Pats extend Hernandez last year?

From a pure on-field standpoint, the plan entering last season was to use Hernandez as the #1 receiver, the guy they move around to get ideal matchups. That obviously didn't work out after he got hurt, but the plan going into the year was that Hernandez was going to have a monster season.

I'm just trying to understand something: if apparently, as various Twitter comments, ESPN, PFT, etc., there were numerous warning signs that Hernandez was a potential problem child in the making, why did the Pats extend him this past fall?

They certainly didn't need to do it: they could have said "Let's wait until next offseason" (if Hernandez complained why GRONK got an extension and he didn't, they could point to both the stats and the fact that only one of the two has tested positive for drugs).

So why did they feel it was in their best interest to do it back then?

I guess their crystal ball was broken and they didn't know that a player who had caused no problems for them was going to get involved in a homicide(damn, where is the psychic network when you need it!)

And the Pats knew nothing about this until probably we did. The guy said up until about a week ago that he was shot by two guys he did not know. Hernandez was never linked to this shooting. The Pats never knew it existed.

Appaently, that is thug talk for Aaron Hernandez shot me and was by accident so don't press charges. But you are right, when the police have no idea who the shooter is, they typically don't press charges.

And where is these articles you read that they had the slug and it was linked to Hernandez? Until last week, the police in FL thought he was shot by an unknown assailant and the case was inactive.

So, he covered for him because he knew it was an accident, but is now suing Hernandez to find out if it was by accident or deliberate.

And even if it was accidental, the police would investigate. Hernandez would be guilty of a crime since he most likely does not have a permit to carry in Florida. And if the gun was not legally his, he could b in a lot of trouble.

And BTW, the police in FL didn't know Hernandez was linked to the shooting until the press came to them about the lawsuit last week. How would the Patriots know? I don't care what a guy on the radio said.

Lastly, if the FL police had ballistic evidence proving Hernandez shot Bradley, that would be as big or bigger of a story right now as the Lloyd murder. Right now, the media isn't taken it seriously because there is absolutely no evidence it is a convicted felon and apparent liar's word vs. Hernandez.

It was a bargain for what he can do on the field. He had spent 2 full seasons/offseasons with us and had zero off the field issues (to my knowledge) so it was a good value and nobody could have predicted it coming back to haunt us right now.

The only possible critiques on that contract would be 1) health issues and 2) already having so much $$ invested in the position with Gronk's new contract and many needs defensively but overall I agreed with the signing.

It would seem the reports are an exaggeration or fabrication given the circumstances surrounding the first time they were ever spoken.

These are only his current charges. In 2006, he go 18 months in prison for felony distribution charge. Ironically, he finished his probation only four months before the charge listed above.

I hate the fact that Hernandez associates with this type of scum, but I still think this guy is just looking for a payday and Hernandez isn't the shooter.
