Why Carolina should not take a QB at #1

They will take Cam Newton for economic reasons.

1. He fills the seats.
2. He's the new face of the franchise.
3. He's very athletic and exciting in the mold of a Vick or Mcnabb.
4. He's marketable.
5. They're desperate for a QB.

Maybe they shouldn't take Newton #1 overall. The QBs in this draft don't rate that highly, but most likely they will just because they need to give their fans some hope and sell those season tickets.

I would argue that missing on a first round pick, especially the first overall pick, could set back a franchise for years... add to that, the Carolina Panthers don't possess a second round pick. Would it be economically sound to be a losing team?

Sadly, given my experience, stars sell tickets more so than winning teams. To my recollection, Vick brought more fans to Falcons games with a .500 or less record than Matt Ryan has with a better than .500 record. So economically, they should take him and sell a bunch of Newton jerseys... sell some seat licenses... and ensure they aren't blacked out during the year.

But if you saw him on Gruden's Rookie Camp show, he clearly isn't ready for the NFL. The ego is in outer space... he doesn't come across as smart... looks like he'll struggle with the complexities of an NFL offense all while trying to adapt to taking from under center.
