Who would of thought in 2004 how bad the next four years would be

The problem is defensive and offensive coaching. I miss Weiss and Romeo. McDaniels is a good one, but more of a Marino than a Montana. Pees is just garbage, and Mangini was horrible before him.

You think BB would stand for it? Not be judged by it? That's just as silly a statement as this thread. Just silly.

The OP probably could have framed their question better, but again (surprise, surprise) doesn't deserve nearly the abuse they are taking from the Patsfans.com elite cognoscenti.

Disappointment does not equal "season is a failure." Frankly, the fans of every team not in the playoffs should be disappointed today.

"All I care about is how it ends, and the endings of the past four years, whether the end of the Patriots' season or the NFL season in general, have been nothing short of disastrous to me."

I don't think the response to the topic is due to an unfortunate phrasing of the question. It's just a ridiculous premise to begin with.

Dramatic endings to each one, but I think you're looking at it negatively. The Patriots are respected throughout for their stability and discipline, not to mention quality and excellence. We'll lift that trophy again soon enough.

Those seem to be the even-keel calming words of Patjew.
Did you change your username, PJ?

I agree...the Pats rule. Six teams exhaled when we were officially eliminated (and that doesn't count the NFC poser). We'll be back...better than 2007.

Hey I'm a guy who has second-guessed the team in our playoff defeats the last couple of years but this year we got the very best out of our boys and then some. After Brady went down, I thought we would go 10-6 if everything fell into place (Cassel not imploding, D stepping up). We did one game better, albeit under different circumstances (Cassel stepping up to save an imploding D).

If by defense imploding, you mean the defense having to field 2 LBers who were out of work for much of the season as starters to make it through the remainder of the season, then I can agree with you.

This defense lost the following to the IR:
Rodney Harrison - Starting Safety
Tank Williams - Reserve Safety
Terence Wheatley - Rookie CB
Adalius Thomas - Starting OLB
Pierre Woods - Reserve OLB / Special teams star
Tedy Bruschi - Starting ILB (okay - he wasn't IRed, but he probably should have been)

Then, at various points in the season, they lost the following:
James Sanders, Lewis Sanders, Ty Warren, Richard Seymour, Jarvis Green, Gary Guyton.

But if you are referring to the defense being bad and acting like there is something more they could have done, we'll have to disagree.

Pretty sure more than just six teams exhaled when we were ousted....from reading thru other websites, it also shows that football fans are also happy to not see us in it this year.....

That to me shows some sort of respect....

But seriously....the OP started an interesting topic....I dont agree with it but thats why we are all on here.....to discuss what we think....

2005- Pats lose in a divisional playoff game. Our hated rivals, the Steelers win the Super Bowl.

2006- The disastrous AFCCG and our biggest rivals, the Colts, winning the Super Bowl.

2007- That doesn't need to be explained.

2008- Pats missing the playoffs. Most likely one of our rivals is going to win the Super Bowl. It will probably be the Chargers seeing how the Steelers have already have won one in the past four years.
You have been completely spoiled by past Super Bowl victories!

I see people are still trying to get in their entries for "Worst thread of the year"....

When a Colts fan and a Dolphins fan are the voices of reason on your thread... you know your thread sucks.

Yea. Now we know what it feels like to be a fan of a team like the Detroit Lions. Poor, poor us.

Like I said, he didn't frame it correctly, and it's not exactly the question I'd like to ask, but if someone told you that after the 2004 Super Bowl that from 2005 to 2008 the Patriots would:

Not win the Super Bowl and would in fact miss the playoffs completely one season

You probably wouldn't have been happy with that statement and would have chosen not to believe them. But in reality, stripping away all the 16-0 hoopla and playoff heartbreak, that is the crux of the matter.

Do I consider that a failure? No.

Do I consider that a disappointment? Yes.

Once again, this type of response is 10x worse than any silly/asinine/far-fetched thread topic. And by a moderator no less.

If people disagree with a thread topic or think it is a "waste of time" why post in it? Further, why personally attack the original poster, which is what 90% of the responders do?

Ummm..... If people disagree with people who disagree with a thread topic or think it is a "waste of time" why post it? Furthermore, neither my post nor T-Shirt's post was a personal attack on the original poster or anyone else.

This is a message board. The idea is that people will start threads and people will give their input in response. It's not a blog with the comments disabled, and it is not required that all responses serve as the functional equivalent of "yes men".

I was posting in the thread originally because I thought the OP posed an interesting topic that I wanted to discuss. My third response was the one that addressed how people gang up & attack certain posters, which IMO is different than simply opening and posting in a thread to bash the OP, which is what most people on here have done. Not saying you specifically, and its nothing endemic to this one thread, but it's definite a common theme around here to simply post in a topic they think is dumb and attack the OP. It's doubly ironic given this is the most hyper-moderated board I've ever seen.

And I agree 100% with your second paragraph, but you don't have to not be a "yes man" to disagree with a topic. There are lots of ways to disagree without being immature and resorting to derisive & mocking language/tone.

How is this bad? Disappointing, yes, but bad? Bad is being a Buffalo Bills or Jets fan this morning. What have they got to look forward to next year?

Why should someone who thinks a thread sucks not say that the thread sucks? Are we supposed to expect that the poster can't handle it? I'm sorry, but I don't buy into that sort of P.C. nonsense.

There's a difference between insulting a terrible idea or action and insulting someone personally. To analogize with a saying: "love the sinner, hate the sin".

To each their own. I prefer to not post anything on the Internet that I would not say to someones face or be embarrassed if a present or future employer were to read. Hence I use my real name for my login at every site and try to (for the most part) treat people how I would like to be treated.

Well, considering the fact that the Pats won 3 SB trophies in the previous 4 years, you could call the last 4 seasons somewhat disappointing, since "we" failed to add a 4th (and with "we" I mean the Patriots football team).
However, considering the fact that the Patriots have stayed very competitive, reaching the AFC CG twice and advancing to the SB once, I can't be disappointed. The Patriots have established themselves as one of the best and stable organizations in the NFL, envied by at least 28 other teams, they've shown they can deal with controversy (***-gate), and with rashes of injuries, and as a further sign of success, other teams are trying to take away the coaches and front office personnel that play a huge role in that success. As the NYJets have shown (as well as Cleveland), it's extremely hard to copy that success, if you don't have all the right building blocks in place.

It is extremely disappointing to see the 2008 season end without playoffs, but to be honest, in my mind the season was over when a certain Mr B. Polly careened into Tom Brady's knee, ending his season. The fact that the Patriots have been able to fall back on their backup QB, who has become a very respectable starter in his own right, doesn't get away from the fact that all signs were pointing to a reprise of the 2007-season domination by the offense, with a re-energized and youthful defense providing some extra punch. But, as they say, all the best plans made by men and mice...

Onto the 2009 season, where we hope that the Patriots can regain their dominance once again, and make a successful run for that fourth SB trophy. It would be nice to see Randy Moss being able to lift that sucker

Give me a break. What have we become, New Yorkers???

Do you know how many cities would die for a last 4 years like weve had?

try living in Kansas City, Cleveland, or Detroit.

I would rather lose straight out like a Detroit or go through a 1990esque 1-15 season than lose the way we lost to the Colts and Giants. It's like you go out with Jennifer Lopez for a few months, she finally agrees to sleep with you, and walks out of the room laughing saying "Got ya!" when you're in your underwear. I'd rather not have the chance with Lopez to begin with.

So then go root for the Lions and be happy.

It really sucks being a perpetual contender that plays meaningful football every week. How I long for the days of mediocrity.
