Who would of thought in 2004 how bad the next four years would be

Perhaps I am in the minority here, but I could care less about the path it takes to get there. All I care about is how it ends, and the endings of the past four years, whether the end of the Patriots' season or the NFL season in general, have been nothing short of disastrous to me.

I'm not happy the Pats haven't won a Super Bowl in four years, but I am realistic. The Pats weren't going to win the Super Bowl every year and were bound to have years even a 4-6 year stretch where they weren't going to repeat as Super Bowl champs even if Belichick and Brady are due more hardware. It is parity in the NFL and so many teams building their teams to either copy or beat the Pats.

It isn't disasterous to lose in the AFC Championships or the Super Bowl. It isn't even disasterous to lose in the first or second round of the playoffs. It may be disapointing. It isn't bad.

If you look at it this way, every year 31 teams have disasterous seasons.

heh...I've been a Patriots fan for so long I can't even believe we had a season like THIS one. There's a sense of pride in this team that cannot be taught or bought.

Disappointed? uh...hell no

I have to say I am disapointed the Pats won't be playing in the playoffs especially since they have been playing their best football over the last month or so. But I am proud of the way they pulled through all the injuries this year.

I am disapointed any year the Pats don't hoist the Lombardi, but I do not use that achievement and whether it is reached on how I judge a season. I would say this season was a success since they still had 11 wins after losing Brady in the first ten minutes of the season.

No defense = no playoffs.

Maybe we've lost sight of what a bad Patriots season used to be.

I mean, come on.

Ditto. The Pats win 3 Lombardis in 4 years and fans start to assume that trophy is a given, disregarding the personnel concerns, competition concerns, and frankly good luck factor that comes into play to win a championship.

2001 - Patten gets knocked out and his limp body collapses touching the sideline. Fumbled ball is ruled out of bounds because he is touching the sideline. If that doesn't happen, probably no playoffs and no championship.

2003 - Lose Milloy. Team folds against Buffalo. Gels after that game rather than coming unhinged.

2004 - Pats secondary smashed to bits. Patchwork secondary, including a wide receiver, enough to keep the defense together and go the distance.

The fact is in any of the previous championship seasons the situation could have gotten out of control, but player personalities and/or luck kept the team in the race. To whine that we lost a divisional round playoff game in the season a cornerstone of the defense was lost to a stroke, an AFC Championship game when the team had no receivers (minutes away from beating the team that wins it all), a Super Bowl after an undefeated season (again, minutes away from winning), and missed the playoffs after an 11-5 season reflects a distorted perspective on how hard it is to compete for 1 Lombardi, let alone multiple championships. Ask the Bills or Broncos about how easy it is to win the trophy even if you make it to the right game to do so. How bad it's been? Ask a Pats fan for this result in 1993 and they would consider it a great run over 4 years.

The great thing is few pundits rule out the Pats at the opening bell of the season and will not do so next year. This team will remain in the mix next year and into the foreseeable future, and fans of other teams hate the Pats because that team has bounced countless other teams which thought it was their time. I will just continue to enjoy the ride and know the Pats have a shot to win the whole thing on any given year. I just feel lucky to be a fan of this franchise and enjoy its success over the years.

I'd love to see the Pats in the playoffs, but I can appreciate an 11-5 season when some fans were predicting 2-14 after the Miami loss. The team lost the 2007 NFL MVP and perceived cornerstone of the offense minutes into the season. No other team in the NFL would do as well after that hit and the numerous other hits this season.

This thread is unbelievable. Next season I will remember to wear a bag over my head out of embarrassment for not winning a Super Bowl during the last four years.

Yeah we've had some bad luck. This just in! The 0-16 Detroit Lions are in need of some fans. I'm sure you'd be more than welcome on their bandwagon.

See how good things are when you put them into perspective?

2005- Pats lose in a divisional playoff game. Our hated rivals, the Steelers win the Super Bowl.

2006- The disastrous AFCCG and our biggest rivals, the Colts, winning the Super Bowl.

2007- That doesn't need to be explained.

2008- Pats missing the playoffs. Most likely one of our rivals is going to win the Super Bowl. It will probably be the Chargers seeing how the Steelers have already have won one in the past four years.

I see people are still trying to get in their entries for "Worst thread of the year"....

Then don't watch the games--make it easy on yourself. If you "could care less (probably mean couldn't care less....) about the path it takes to get there. All I care about is how it ends," then why bother? Just check at the end of the year if the Pats won and leave it at that.

Terrible thread. We haven't won the superbowl in a FEW YEARS, but we're competitive EVERY YEAR. That's more than I can say for majority of teams in the NFL.

Most teams consider it good fortune to make it to one SB. We went to four, won three. If you think that losing a divisional title game, an AFCCG, a SB, going 11-5 and be only the second team in modern hx to miss the playoffs your spoiled. We're in the mix every year, would you rather be the Jets, Miami, KC, Arizona etc?

Oh give me a dang break. how the last four years have not been bad by any means. It's been no worse than any other team that hasn't won the superbowl. Please..

Dramatic endings to each one, but I think you're looking at it negatively. The Patriots are respected throughout for their stability and discipline, not to mention quality and excellence. We'll lift that trophy again soon enough.
GOD I HOPE YOUR RIGHT. 8 long months we have to wait sigh. excuse me i have to go puke again. the thought of not making the playoffs at 11 and 5 is making me sick.

yah man....its been a rough 4 years.

the pain that we have suffered will be eradicated by another TB SB run in 09

2005 I didn't care about. That was an up and down season where Brady single-handedly carried the team to 10 wins. They "could" have beat Denver if they played an A game, but every team is due for a playoff stinker. 2006 against the Colts hurt worse than a finger wave. 1.)I hate the Colts more than the Yankees and Angelina Jolie combined, which is saying a lot. 2.)The fact that we were up 21-3. 3.)The fact that if we had won, we would have cruised to a 4th Super Bowl against the Grossman-led Bears. Last year was just as bad, because 1.)There was an undefeated season on the line. 2.)They were two minutes and a dropped interception by Samuel away from another Super Bowl and history.

I would have rather lost to the Chargers in 06 (Which they should have and would have if Choke-in-himer had handed the ball to LT in the second half and Troy Brown didn't make a miraculous play), and lost a game in the regular season and just lost straight out in the playoffs in a non-SB game to any team but the Colts than have those two endings.

Not even Heather Graham nude pictures could cheer me up for the month after the 06 AFC game, and I had to schedule my first and last therapy session after the Giants game, literally.

You're rooting for the wrong team. Actually, it's also the wrong sport. I suggest you to stop watching NFL and go see Scottish soccer... just pick Celtic or Rangers, you won't have to worry about waiting more than two or three years for a championship...

Of course, it's disappointing not to win the SB, but I can't say these have been 4 bad years. Each season I've been proud of my team and this time is no different. They had some bad games, yeah, but I care a lot more about the good things they did during 2008.

I don't know whether this applies to you or not, but after Tommy went down it became clear that there were a lot of folks on this Board whose experience of the NFL was more or less limited to the 2001--2004 Seasons. Some of the anti-Cassel posts and threads out here over the course of his first few games were so bad as to become an embarrassment to the Board, which Ian addressed accordingly. So, my point is that there are a lot of folks out here who have no idea how hard it is to succeed at the highest level in the NFL, especially in the Post Cap era.

What the Patriots have accomplished by going to five of seven AFCCG's and four of seven SB's, winning three of them, is beyond remarkable.

"Bad" would have been coasting after SB XXXIX and not contending again these last four years, though we had the personnel to do so.

"Bad" would have been the Krafts deciding to hoard their Cap money rather than investing each year in the best possible team.

"Bad" would have been being unable to resign TB and losing BB to big bucks at some struggling franchise.

"Bad" would have been plugging the gap left by Brady's injury with a pathetically bad backup instead of with a guy who is clearly a high quality NFL starter--and maybe even a great one, though he has yet to earn that accolade.

While they have been disappointing without a doubt, there has been little "bad" about the last four years if we know anything about the league. Climbing the mountain to the Conference Championship and Super Bowl is extremely difficult and we have done it consistently and well.

So, let's have a little perspective here. The Pats have done and are continuing to do what no team in the Post Cap era has even come close to doing. We'll be contending again next year and I like our chances; the Pats are never better than when they have a chip on their shoulder and going 11--5 and missing the Playoffs will give them a huge attitude next year.

Am I disappointed? Would I be happier if we had four or five Lombardi's now instead of "only" three? Am I still unable to watch a tape of last year's SB? Do I find it maddening that we didn't make the Playoffs this year? Of course I am. But do I think any of this has been "bad?" No way.

I don't think the guy was trying to say this has been a "bad" team for the last 4 years, as that would be a simply ridiculous statement.

I think the correct term to use is "heartbreaking".

It's completely fair to say the last 3 endings to our seasons have been disappointing...

2006: 21-3
2007: 18-1
2008: 11-5 / No Playoffs

Now by disappointing, that doesn't mean this season was a disappointment by any means. Just the fact that's it's obviously disappointing to go 11-5 and learn you're not advancing.

That's the price Pat fans are going to pay for the excellence

Point taken, CT. But what have those 49 regular season wins amounted to? Two of the worse losses any team has ever experienced, a loss to the Broncos, and missing the playoffs.

and expectations the organization has brought. When you are going to be in the SB hunt every year the losses are going to be more painful than if you were expecting to go 6-10 to start the year and went 4-12.
