What To Expect From An Attacking Defense

Bruh. He had 19 carries for 38 yards. He had one run over 5 yards.
jeanty was 6 for 24 in the first half, including a 9 yard run.
He was 19 for 38 for the game.
Some arithmetic tells us just how poorly Jeanty's numbers were for the 2nd half, averaging about 1 yard a carry.
=======
There is lot on the internet on just how bad Jeanty was, or just how good our run defense was.

Agreed the defensive front showed a lot of good along with the few mistakes they made, much like Drake or the rest of the team.

Keep the good, fix the mistakes, improve every week.

We have a very different Defense. I expect to see an attacking Defense that has lots of pressure, lots of sacks, one that gives up many more big plays, more interceptions and gives up 17-20 points a game.

The Defense played well enough to win and will get better as the season progresses.

Over the course of the year, the secondary will get more comfortable in maintaining assignments through blitzes while covering the openings from whatever blitz is being called. An underrated talent of the later secondaries under BB/SB/Flores.

Have a look at this and tell me what you think of the run defense.

He had 18 carries for 29 yards the rest of the game.
Please tell me where he turned all those 2 and 3 yard runs into 4 and 5 yard runs. Like I said, he had 1 run over 5 yards the entire game, and you just showed it.

I should have said turning a stop at the line into a two or three yard run, but notice that that run I just showed was a three-yard run, not a "run over 5 yards", as you say.

I think goes to show that you shouldn't just go by stats. I remember that Football Outsiders tried to develop a quantitative metric to relate the successfulness of the run to the situation. Unfortunately, there aren't any stats for who converts third downs and how, but my memory is that Jeanty was unstoppable on those crucial short-yardage downs (in contrast to the Pats.)

To get back to my point, I'll not be convinced by the Pats' defense until I see it make successful run stops on the goal-line or in third-and-short.

Nah. They bottled Jeanty up the whole game. And the announcers were dying to talk about him. The whole “too much power,” thing when he slipped in for the TD was pathetic. He did nothing, and that’s with a couple of Spillane errors that could have stopped him behind the line.

Pats run defense was solid. Not everything was bad

OK. But am I wrong in thinking they also converted on other third-and-short runs? And the Patriots conspicuously couldn't.

No. I'm happy to be told I'm wrong, but you might explain it ...
You are saying the run defense that allowed 24 rushes for 56 years, 2.3 per rush was bad? And to prove it you show one play?

What is your expectation? 24 rushes for zero yards?

What I'm saying is that that wasn't just a three-yard run (win for the defense) but a touchdown run with very poor tackling by the defense. And there were similar short-yardage runs that don't show up on the aggregate stats. One play doesn't prove it, of course, although it is pretty striking. To repeat, no, I'm not joking, and, if you want to argue something different, please engage with what I'm saying by giving some relevant evidence rather than name-calling. OK?

i expect to see receivers get behind / get separation from carlton davis like they did last week
As we go along i expect those coverage break downs to be minimal. Hawkins and Woodson will be in better positions Davis is rangy and can re-route wrs.. coverage will be better and settle down once gonzo returns.. most teams with an all pro are going to miss thier presence if they aren’t playing.

I like this style of defense. of course at times you give up a play here an there. It won't be to the tune of 9 like last week. Playing well enough to win is exactly the key here.. we have the capability to score 20-24 points and the defense can hold teams to under 20.. we can't fully gadge the defense until it gets it's all pro back..

How was I “name calling”? 24 rushes for 56 yards is tremendous run D.
The raiders ran 2 times in 3rd and short and gained 3 yards, converting 1 of 2.
I think you are misremembering. All game they only had 3 rushing first downs and one of them was a scramble by Smith. Other than the play you showed their RBs made 1 sole FD all game.

Relevant Evidence. 24 carries for 56 yards.
22 called runs for 46 yards.

Your take is batshit crazy. That's name calling, btw. Andy didn't name-call you anything. You're just wrong. It's ok to be wrong, and have a brutally bad take.

When someone says "you're joking, right" instead of responding with evidence, that's name-calling. If someone says, but there were these and these plays, fair enough.

carlton davis sucks

carlton davis sucks
I thought Captain and I were the only ones. Welcome to the club. He was okay last Sunday until that back breaking 3rd and 20 where he did the Ellis Hobbs slip and fall. That was bad.

He's got a huge test on Sunday.
