What To Expect From An Attacking Defense

We have a very different Defense. I expect to see an attacking Defense that has lots of pressure, lots of sacks, one that gives up many more big plays, more interceptions and gives up 17-20 points a game.

The Defense played well enough to win and will get better as the season progresses.

I disagree. I think the defense was a disappointment.

I don't know if you were at the game, but the conditions were very bad -- something that doesn't show up on TV. So they favoured the defenses.

Yes, the pass rush was a pleasant change from last season, but the Raiders were more successful running the ball than the Patriots, thanks to Ashton Jeanty, who constantly broke through tackles and made yards after contact.

Bowers and (*sniff*) Meyers carved up the zone defense. On a quick re-watch, Hawkins and Ellis were particularly responsible.

I perhaps wouldn't have blamed Davis for the two chunk plays if he isn't been paid like a lockdown corner. If you're earning like Stephon Gilmore, don't play like Myles Bryant!

Even apart from the first drive and his touchdown, he was turning 2 or 3 yard runs into 4 or 5 yard ones, which makes all of the difference. To be fair, the backups were much less successful, which suggests it was the attacker rather than the defenders who were responsible. Still, I think he gave the Raiders an important advantage.

I don't know about this hyped "attacking D"... everyone attacks. BB had great pass rushing, and cover schemes... really, the best the NFL had seen early 2000's (just ask Manning).
But, what concerns me - is the apparent blind spot in this scheme - which is to blitz on 3rd & 20, while giving up 25yds.

You can be aggressive & physically dominant, without pinning ears back every down and leaving passing zones widely exposed.

How can that be?

Jeanty had 19 rush attempts and produced 38 yards. Albeit, he had 1 run of 9 yards.

17-20 is a a pipe dream. The #1 scoring defense in the NFL last year allowed 17.7. 20 a game wood have ranked 8th.

I guess you're correct. They didn't pitch a shutout. They allowed 20 points. They shouldn't allow 10, given our Offense.

Sure, the runs were short, but they were vital -- 3-yard touchdown, various short yardage first downs. He was a tough runner inside.

You're correct. Lots of coaches and fans do NOT prefer an attacking Defense.

Giving up 25 yards isn't the result of blitzing but of communication and execution of downfield coverage. Many teams (losing ones) just give the other team a free opportunity for a 10 to 15 yard catch on 3rd and 20 and dare the Offense to get enough yards for a first down. They congratulate themselves when they hold the opposition to a gain of 10-15 yards. Get used to it. I don't expect the Defense to change.

A lot of passing success was the result of error, like Jaylin Hawkins outright falling down on the long TD pass to start the game. First game jitters can explain some errors. Teams typically get better in execution as the season progresses if they’re well coached. We need to see a larger sample size to determine what exactly the defense is.
