The obvious choice is Solder so Brady can remain vertical. I hope the Patriot's
plan is not to shift Cannon to left tackle. Cannon is a good right tackle but a lousy
left tackle. Shifting him ensures a Brady injury.

Absolutely Solder.
Replacing a left tackle would be a huge challenge, and could have a significant impact on the type of offense the Patriots play.

Amendola is a popular choice - but look at the context. The Patriots currently have Cooks, Edelman, Hogan, and Mitchell returning. Sure he is clutch, but you get Edelman back in a very similar role. Hogan is certainly a capable third receiver if Amendola leaves.

Looking at the needs at LT, DL, LB, CB, RB - hard to see a third/fourth receiver (in his 30's) have anywhere near the priority of starters at those other positions. Unfortunately for Amendola, he is going to have to really want to play for the Patriots to return.

Is Solder even going to keep on playing? He has to be worried about his son, especially with one relapse-after-remission already in the books :(

Tom Curran in the last Quick Slants podcast said that he thought that Solder would keep playing. Nothing firm, just a feeling.

Should we start an Amendola thread and make it a sticky?

Every year, Belichick and Brady make clear that Danny is valuable as a PR and #5 receiver who is capable of starting. Every year, lots of folks want him cut so that we can have some bottom of the roster player make the team.

Danny has taken pay cuts every year. He WANTS to play. IMHO, the team has underpaid him for years.

And just BTW, we should remember that both Edelman and Mitchell are coming back from injuries. Having a quality #5 is a good idea. It is also a good idea to have a punt returner than we can trust, or are you fine with Edelman as the PR, with no backup?

BOTTOM LINE
I'd sign Danny tomorrow, or the day after signing Solder.

Amendola is a popular choice - but look at the context. The Patriots currently have Cooks, Edelman, Hogan, and Mitchell returning. Sure he is clutch, but you get Edelman back in a very similar role. Hogan is certainly a capable third receiver if Amendola leaves.

It greatly increases the odds, that’s for sure.

I think one of the popular thoughts is that they are happy and familiar with the care that he’s receiving, and may not want to uproot and switch hospitals/doctors, etc—at least if the money is comparable.

I hope he does. He turned in two of his absolute finest games as a pro in the AFCCG and the Super Bowl.

Fortunately it’s not an either or situation, and they could keep Solder/Lewis/ and Amendola, as well as others. Forced to choose it would have to be a Solder, as finding a LT of his caliber would be really hard. It’s easier to replace Lewis and Amendola.

I'm going to say Dion Danny and Solder.
Martellus Bennet retires
Dwayne Allen cut
Branch gone retired?
Burkhead gone
Gilleslie gone
Mcclein back he's cheap
Marquis Flowers resigned
2 linebackers signed in free agency.
Hightower asked to restructure and with his injury history and leery teams out there he agrees.
Dion Lewis 3 year contact 15.5 Million 7 Million guaranteed?
Danny Admendola 2 years at 5.5 Million total
Marquis Flowers 3 years at 10.5 Million 4 mill guaranteed
Solder 3 years 34 Million 12 Million guaranteed.
Pats sign 2 additional linebackers in free agency.
We stand Pat at cornerback with The Jones twins coming back.
Stand Pat at defensive tackle with Valentine coming back
Patriots kick the tires on Landry but he's to expensive.
Patriots sign runningback Hill as a change of pace big back 2 years 6.5 Million Belichick likes taking the talent Lewis misuses.

Patriots head into the draft needing a Future QB for the future
LB depth and talent
DL if their are any players better
Oline to replace Flemming and Waddle who get starting gigs and salary elsewhere.

Patriots see this as a good year to trade up into the draft and trade for a defensive playmaker on the line in Veta. Belichick can't help himself when he sees him sitting there at 11.
Belichick trades back up into the draft and drafts QB Jackson
With remaining picks in later rounds Patriots draft pass rushers O line and 2 late round tight ends.

Thoughts?

There are three cornerbacks signed through 2018 named Jones: David, Jonathan and Cyrus.

  1. Lewis
  2. Solder
  3. Slater
  4. Amendola (depends on other moves)
  5. Burkhead (depends on other moves)

That's how I'd slot the top 5 on the list. But I expect that Solder will be the #1 target of the Patriots.

Went with Danny because Dion is more replaceable if we manage to keep Rex and I think, maybe naively, that any decent or average talent at LT overachieves due to Brady and Scar

Solder and Dola. Both will be hard to replace but Amendola has some intangibles that will be very hard to replace
