Week 5: We're on to Indy

Indy traveling on a short week after an OT game and with a lot of nicked up players. I hope this doesn't shape up to be a trap game.

Have the deflategate liars lined up another bogus sting operation with the NFL?

They didn’t know the properties of air before. What’s next, claiming that Brady altered gravity in Foxborough?

They'll probably go after Edelman for the gravity thing. He has a wicked sense of humor.

What I usually do with their ratings is to assume that at least internally they are at least somewhat consistent and just use them to see how players to relative to each other.

The problem is that it's all different reviewers. I really like PFF for certain stats that are more objective or verifiable, and they do a good job compiling information, but something like elusive rating seems difficult to quantify at best, and impossible to regulate when it's done by different internal teams. Regardless, look up Dion Lewis last year, and you'll see that Michel's rating isn't actually that good (yet).

"Lewis ranked No. 1 in PFF’s elusive rating (73.2) among running backs with at least 165 attempts. He also ranked No. 3 in yards after contact per attempt (3.17) and tied for fifth in forced missed tackles on the ground (42) across his 180 carries this past season."

Outside hosting the Bills and Jets, this is easily the easiest game remaining on our schedule (+ all the other aforementioned advantages, eg injured Colts, them coming off an overtime game, home on Thursday night, etc) and I am expecting a blowout.

I’m not ready to lump the Jets in with the Bills and Colts just yet, but all three should be relatively easy.

This is a game the Pats should win in a landslide. The Colts are coming off a home loss, played overtime, have to travel, and have a short week.

With that said, this is the typical game the Pats screw up. I see it being really tight and could go either way.

Colts are facing the big challenge ... Question is how could they over come it? New coach facing coach he replaced kinda... Weird dynamic there.. bigger concern is Reich beating pats as OC in super bowl last year.... Hmmm. Defense better flip that script...

Rather optimistic....

Don't really like the word easy for an NFL football game. I do think pats will out execute colts in key areas... We shall see..

Oh I am not a fan of PFF but I assume that even if you have different reviewers the guidelines and fundamentals are "more or less" similar.

I would never use it to rank players. But I think you can kinda create tiers of players with it. And for now I am fine with where Michel is relative to other players in that range and also how he looked.

By his own words he is getting more comfortable now that he has had actual live reps. His arrow should point upwards.

I think that Reich could end up being a pretty good HC, but the Colts roster (aside from Luck) doesn't seem to offer the depth and breadth of skill that he enjoyed in Philly yet - especially on the OL. If he and his GM and coaching staff can work together well over the next couple years to build and develop that, the Colts could become regular post-season contenders by 2020, if Luck stays healthy.

My opinion on Reich as a HC aside (I don’t think he’s much of one), I actually don’t think that’s out of the ordinary for most teams.

Because I'm nosy as Hell, my curiosity tends toward the "back shop" aspects of this for the Pats - the game planning, Ernie Adams stuff. With just walkthroughs and little/no practice speed reps, is it even worth it or is Thursday just an extension of pre-season where they'll run plays they already have in the "practiced" side of the ledger?

On one hand, it's more basic "beat your man/do your job" football, but on the other in a lot of cases that negates the advantage the Patriots have built up as part of their modus operandi to have an opponent based attack plan designed to exposes their weakness while taking away their strength.

In short, Thursday games suck.

I'm guessing that the "practiced" (and executed well) side of the ledger has grown each week and is now large enough that they have plenty of plays to draw from to create a complete, Colts-specific plan - including one or two wrinkles that they haven't put on game-tape yet.

I'm really not expecting an OSFA/vanilla attack on either side of the ball.

Really hope Gronk’s ankle is good to go.

Apparently, they had him rub some dirt on it, so it's all better now.

Seriously, even if he only plays 50% of the snaps, and most of those run-blocking, it will still give the Colts defense something more to account for.
