I think he has a few scheduled games off this season and tonight is one of them. NBC seems to be starting the transition to Tirico taking over.

Edit: Michaels was given at least three "byes" this season by NBC. His contract is up after the 2021 season, so he might retire then. Super Bowl 56 would be his final game if he does.
