Week 10 Injury Updates (ongoing)

If it's the flu I'd rather we get hit with it now than during the playoffs. I have had the flu shot and I still caught it. Every year before this I never bothered with the shot and never caught it.

If Collins had the flu, I think he would be back by now. This is concerning.

He got it on Saturday. The flu just doesn't up and leave you in 3 days. You could have it for a week It would also would be kind of dumb to have a guy getting over the flu out in chilly, rainy weather today. Especially when you are trying to make sure it doesn't spread thru the locker room.

Didn't know Martin had a hammy issue. Probably explains why he's been inactive and Dobson active.

Not only that, but if it's actually influenza it can leave you weak for up to weeks after you're no longer contagious (and just getting to that point can take a week).

FWIW, Mike Loyko on twitter today was shooting down as "moronic" the rumors of Collins having MRSA.

FWIW, my earlier comment isn't about MRSA, just that it is more serious than I hoped.

I don't know how it is in the rest of the Boston area, but Somerville/Cambridge have had an epidemic of nasty respiratory tract infections in the last month.

I think most people expect Jackson to miss another week or two but we should be fine at guard with Mason back. The bigger issue is tackle. I'm really hoping either Vollmer or Cannon are ready this week. Not sure what the alternative would be. I'm guessing Stork at right tackle, Barker might be a possibility as well but to say he was unimpressive this spring would be the understatement of the year.

Isn't even the "flu" speculation on our part? He could just have a nasty head cold that will take 7-10 days regardless of how healthy you are, and everyone agrees that bed rest is better than practice until say, for his sake and the team's.

I find it hard to believe, in Collins' case, that a 26 year old athlete in peak physical condition, with access to team nutritionists, doctors, and wellness staff would be out with a "flu" for more than a few days. I'm guessing this is more than run of the mill "flu".

What most people call 'flu' isn't actually influenza. People say 'flu' when they mean a cold (when it's respiratory) or a stomach virus. Actual influenza (H5N1, H1N1, whatever, even when it's 'run-of-the-mill') can easily knock someone on their ass for a week or more, no matter how young and healthy they were when they got it. Respiratory MRSA is no joke either (it causes a difficult to treat pneumonia), but it is not easily transmitted.

Not that I'm an expert or anything. I'm no doctor (not the MD kind, anyhow), but I work and teach in the public health arena.

Typical influenza in adults is characterized by sudden onset of chills, fever, prostration, cough, and generalized aches and pains (especially in the back and legs). Headache is prominent, often with photophobia and retrobulbar aching. Respiratory symptoms may be mild at first, with scratchy sore throat, substernal burning, nonproductive cough, and sometimes coryza. Later, lower respiratory tract illness becomes dominant; cough can be persistent, raspy, and productive. GI symptoms may occur and appear to be more common with the 2009 pandemic H1N1 strain.
After 2 to 3 days, acute symptoms rapidly subside, although fever may last up to 5 days. Cough, weakness, sweating, and fatigue may persist for several days or occasionally for weeks.

Collins' illness was described as a contagious type of bug Sunday. No one seemed concerned. Today, someone said, "I hope he's OK."

Am I allowed to be a liiiiiiiiiittle freaked out about this ?

#Patriots LB Jamie Collins, not spotted by reporters today, is battling a virus. He’s very weak, hasn’t been able to eat. Status in doubt

OK, this makes me feel better.
