Vrabel's Staff Discussion Thread (Discuss related news here)

Vrabel is playing it smart. Keep McDaniels contact on the down low. Leak that the 2 rooney oc’s have benn interviewed, wait a few days then announce the hire

I still don’t think Vrabel is interested in McDaniels. Vrabel has never shown interest in running a McDaniels type of offense. I think we are not hearing anything about McDaniels because he isn’t a serious candidate for the job.

There is nothing stopping Vrabel from bringing him in for an interview. Every time he is asked about McDaniels, he brushes off the question.

I think this whole avoiding Rooney Rule circumvention theory may be wishful thinking.

Optics aside, the pats have complied 100% with the dumb ass rooney rule

Things are going to start heating up. When do we get an announcement, Monday? Everyone feel like the guy has already been chosen or do they start picking up the interviews? I personally hope for McDaniels. Solid OC with the background to gain serious buy-in. Credibility to work side by side with a strong personality like Vrabes. Not to mention he will be the safest bet to not be a flight risk anytime soon. I’m also interested to see what wrinkles McDaniels has added to his scheme during the year off.

Vrabel said they are going to be considering a lot of candidates and not going to make a quick decision. I don’t know why we should not believe that to be the case.

Next week, Vrabel will have interview access to coaches from other teams that are eliminated from the playoffs this weekend. I am guessing more interviews will be scheduled next week.

I didn’t mean breaking the rules. I meant circumventing bad optics theory. Should have been clearer.

I think this is why people think McDaniels is the favorite and not really based on inside information. It is the Patriots’ MO to hire back former coaches who are being paid by other teams. I think if the Krafts are making the call, McDaniels would be the favorite. I just don’t see him as a Vrabel pick. Vrabel believes in the WCO and Shanahan/McVay disciples, not offensive coaches from Belichick tree.
I do believe RK would love a cheap contract he would get hiring JM
Saying that
If it is McDaniels
There is no way Vrabel took this job to allow Kraft to make the call on who is going to be his OC
If it is Josh. Vrabel wanted him because he feels he is the best fit
If it is not JM then Vrabes did not think it was a good fit

You may be right but McDaniels offers promise of long term stability without need to change OC’s every 1-2 years.
McDaniels can adapt to what Vrabel wants

Did he say they were considering or interviewing a lot of candidates? I dont remember the exact wording. Will be interesting to see how it all goes down. Lips have tightened up on the ship. Are we going to hear about the interviews as they go down or just get a hiring announcement?

I don’t think money really factors in, and I don’t think Vrabel necessarily prefers one system. He seems pretty adaptable.

I don’t think Vrabel would have taken the job unless he was promised he would have complete control of his staff. But that is why I don’t think McDaniels is a serious candidate for OC. Vrabel seems to want Shanahan/McVay guys running his offenses and not Belichick guys. He opportunities to get guys like Chad O’Shea and other Patriots offensive assistants and opted against it.

He used the WCO exclusively in Tennessee and hired multiple coordinators over his tenure. He seems to favor that one. I would say based on his history, he has a preference.

McDaniels can adapt to what Vrabel wants

I don’t think you hire a coordinator because they have no shot at getting a head coaching job in two years. You cannot predict the future. Even in a year with high turnover, there are only 6-7 head coaching jobs open. So even if Maye becomes elite, there is no guarantee that Vrabel’s OC gets a head coaching job in two years. Ben Johnson has been rumored to be getting a head coaching job for two years now and there is no guarantee he takes a job this year.

And I definitely don’t want McDaniels if he is going to be running a Shanahan/McVay offense. Why have McDaniels if he is not running his offense? McDaniels can adapt his offense to fit many different QBs, but that doesn’t mean he is the right guy to run a different offense. And it doesn’t mean that a McDaniels offense adapted for Maye is the best offense to utilize Maye’s skills.

He pretty much said it here. He also didn’t really seem to high on McDaniels here.

Doesn’t change the fact that I want McDaniels to be the guy. Don't crush my hopes bro! Who would you recommend that would be an equivalent coordinator but on the WCO?

He could be waiting for certain teams to be eliminated from the playoffs
It makes sense.
He could have moved on McDaniels by now
Time will tell

At this point, with the Pats fulfilling the Rooney rule & not requesting interviews with Kubik or the other serious options, I’d be shocked if it wasn’t McDaniels. And I couldn’t be happier about it.

Maye/Vrabel/McDaniels is Championship caliber. There isn’t another team in the league with a better trio in those three positions.

I agree and Brady would be a good QB coach in my opinion
TB12 would be amazing at it. But he's already taken a very lucrative broadcasting job and is also part owner of the Raiders so I don't think he'll be doing that anytime soon.

Good. I want them to do a comprehensive search for the best OC possible. Vrabel knows how to run a team and coach defense, but most defense-first coaches really don't have much idea how to run and organize the offense. And that's fine, get the best help possible in the area you're not expert in.

Bro. Vrabel knows offense. Have you seen his TD/Catch ratio? He’d probably be a better WR coach than last year’s group. Teach Polk a thing or two about footwork.

I am not sure. Marcus Brady looks like he might be a good choice. Maybe Brian Griese or Nick Caley. I am not as familiar with the available candidates from the Shanahan or McVay systems.

Sorry for the confusion, but Brady being a QB coach was in reference to Marcus Brady who was interviewed by Vrabel for the OC spot.
