Since Inman isn't the first vet guy to do this, I have a feeling with these older players invited to TC for a tryout, the Pats/BB probably tell them, "Look, at any point if you think it's not working out, you can ask for your release and we'll give it to you," as part of the hook to get them here. It's a win/win, because we get some experience in TC for little $$, we might get a good player out of it if things click quickly, or if not, no hard feelings. On the player's side, you are in camp with a great team, (hopefully) showing you still have the goods, and even if things don't work out here, you have a better chance of hooking on elsewhere as you've shown you can still play (and the vaunted Patriots took a chance on you).

Feel the same way. No hard feelings. Wish it worked out here. Best of luck to Inman on his next team.

It makes sense, though. Detroit is basically doing a complete personnel rebuild, even though the GM is the same. The change from the previous coaches to a BB tree guy has led to a need to ditch most of what was there. And, with Inman having been in camp all this time, he's familiar with the BB school of coaching and culture building.

People ignore the import of that at their own (analytic) peril, IMO.

Patricia probably recognizes better than most when a player isn't going to stick on the Pats. Why would he give anything up for a guy he knows is going to hit the free market in a week?

Doesn't surprise me. I guess we just had too many good prospects. I would have rather kept Inman than DT coming from a torn Achilles. Hopefully it all works out.

He's 30. He was a free agent until the middle of May. Not all players have trade value.

I don't believe that whether Bill releases vets early to find another job, or keeps them all the way to Cutdown Day, makes a dime's worth of difference regarding future vet free agent signings.

If you doubt it, ask players yourself.

If Belichick was to tell a veteran who's asked for his release no because he's keeping him only to protect his important players, there's absolutely no way that doesn't get discussed among players and agents going forward.

How did the Patriots fail to get a draft pick from the Lions for a WR the Lions didn't even want!? I hope someone was fired over that one.

How many players are going to make their free agency decision based upon the softness of the landing if they fail and get cut?

If that original post is what Bill told a veteran player word for word, you're saying that wouldn't have any kind of negative ripple effect?
