Very strange, RT Jonathan Martin has gone AWOL from Dolphins.

This is an interesting dilemma- on the one hand, picking on a teammate is a form of bonding, and also a way to put a rookie in his place, but how far do you go with this?

Obviously full-blown hazing is detrimental to the concept of teamwork; nothing divides a team like taking sides on an issue within the team. Where do you draw the line?

WAY before pretty much the entire team piling on a guy repeatedly, assuming that that's what happened. IF that's so the team captains needed to step in.

Alternatively, it could be that the guy has a fragile psyche.

Anyone seeing this guy last year knew this was a potential disaster, yet Miami let their starter walk and passed on the chance to get a quality replacement.

Incognito is being investigated as a main antagonist for a prolonged period of time. No shock here.

...and now he's sharing texts from Martin with the media to prove it's not his fault.

: Dolphins guard Richie Incognito told Darlington that he heard back from Martin on Friday after he'd reached out to him to see how Martin was doing.

In the middle of a conversation that lasted 19 texts, Martin wrote the following to Incognito: "Yeah, I'm good man. It's insane bro, but just know I don't blame you guys at all. It's just the culture around football, and the locker room got to me a little."

Well said. We'll probably never know exactly what happened and to what extent it was "bullying" vs. him just not being cut out for the NFL.

But what gets me is the people who torment weaker, easier targets who are doing their best, but they just aren't that good. As opposed to someone like albert haynesworth who obviously had the talent but was just lazy and unmotivated even after getting a gigantic contract. I wonder how many teammates tried to "bully" or "harass" haynesworth over the years in NE, WASH, or TENN.

At the end of the day it's supposed to be a team where teammates look out for one another.

When I played in high school, in grade 10, some of us were playing or practicing with the senior team (gr 11 & 12). A group of seniors cornered one of the weaker gr 10 guys in the locker room, and proceeded to take a pickle and a paddle and paddle the pickle up his you-know-what. That kid never played a team sport from that moment on.

You would think that NFL paid professionals would act more mature than high school kids.

I believe the HS story, but also find it hard to believe because it's so messed up. Who the heck thinks of something like that? And then convinces other people to go along with it? In my younger days, I was involved in some hazing, both as the newbie and then later when other guys went through it, but it was comparatively tame stuff. Nothing like the story above, where the reaction should be "WTF is wrong with you?"

If I had to guess, I'd say none of the pickle paddlers had that done to them when they were the underclassmen. It might have been threatened but never actually done, like the fake branding scene in Jarhead. But then someone missed the point of the exercise and decided to raise the stakes.

I don't think enough people here are psychologists to diagnose him with issues.

If someone shoots another person in the leg, most people understand the person who is shot is in pain from the shot, not because he has a leg condition. It seems when it comes to issues like this, people too quickly come to the assumptions the person is a mental case.

You can be perfectly normal upstairs and still suffer the effects of bullying. Not everyone is strong minded or has a thick skin, and that doesn't necessarily mean you are a headcase.

Nobody here is claiming to be a psychologist. Very few of us are experts on anything but that doesn't prevent us from coming to this forum to discuss the idea du jour.

For a team to bond, it seems that some ribbing and teasing is inevitable. I guess, as pointed out, the key is for the captains to know when to step in and failing that, the coaches.

Jonathan Martin of Miami Dolphins has not filed formal complaint due to fear of retribution from teammates - ESPN

Pretty good story outlining the situation. Among the details:

Martin's recent reported text communications with Incognito that indicated he did not hold the guard responsible for his absence also were sent in the same spirit of fearing retribution, sources told ESPN.

Also, if Incognito is trying to win himself a PR war, he might need some help:

Incognito took to Twitter on Sunday, stating that he wants his "name cleared." He called the reports "false speculation" and "slander" and said ESPN was hiding behind sources "who are not man enough to put their name behind the BS you report."

And this from a Miami reporter's Twitter timeline (doesn't sound like a team building thing to me...):

I reported last week that there were other issues, with resentments being harbored between other players. It's about this.

I can now report this: This is a HUGE issue inside the Dolphins' locker room, and not just limited to this situation.

One young defensive player, whose privacy I'm protecting, has literally gone broke because he's been pressured to pay for older players.

Adam Beasley ?@AdamHBeasley 46m
They've gotten sucked into the Miami lifestyle, and the veterans are using the younger players as an ATM, I'm told.

Recently, a younger player was handed the tab for a $30,000 team dinner. The rookie minimum this year is around $400.000.

When I talked about anger, dysfunction last week, this is what I was referring to. This issue extends far beyond the Martin situation.

It was the early '90's and it did happen. There were about 3 seniors who were involved who ended up being suspended for a week or so. I went to a private school so they tried to sweep it under the rug pretty quickly. The guys parents didn't pursue it any further then the suspensions because their son was probably embarrassed enough.

Wow. That has NOTHING to do with "team bonding" or "lockerrom culture" and everything to do with extortion.

The fans around the country who have blithely labeled Martin "emotionally weak" and blamed his "fragile psyche" might want to hold off a bit.

Handed the tab for a $30,000 dinner to a rookie or younger player who probably makes less than most of the other guys. In these kinds of situations the rookie just has to realize that he is a grown man and tell them it ain't gonna happen. You want lobster and porterhouse and champagne? Buy it yourself like a self sufficient man, I'm not your ****** dad.

Given that NFL stands for Not For Long for most of these younger players, you can't let your own teammates take your money like that. I really hope that team implodes this year, even more than normal.

And the extortionists will just say "hey, that's cool bro," slap you on the back, and do nothing whatsoever to sabotage your chances of staying in the league?

I think it's fair to assume that if it were that simple and friendly, rookies wouldn't be going broke in Miami.

Where are the team captains in all this? Where is the team leadership? How can any of those incidents happen without one team captain knowing or hearing about it?

There is a serious leadership void on the Dolphins.

Possibly enjoying their free meals.

Good point. I realize the complexities involved, but in addition to the coaches and team elders having more character, part of the dynamic is standing up for yourself. The best way to deal with a bully/extortionist is to confront him straight on. People like that thrive on being able to intimidate.

If it was me, I would say "hell no, i'm not paying that 30 grand tab," and if that ends up making me a friendless outcast on the team, then so be it. At least i'll be saving my money, especially for the younger guys who may not be long for the league.

And by sabotaging their chances at staying in the league, it depends exactly what they were doing that would determine how I would handle that.
