I think he did his job as a bridge hire. He had OC experience in CLE, but behind a head coach who really ran the offense. AVP seems like a good coach to have on staff, but he's just not up to par with the play design/playcalling aspects that you need to actually run an offense. He can't be the guy designing and overseeing the whole offense. BUT, no one really qualified to do that wanted to come here last year so they had to settle for AVP.
Realistically, he should have never been expected to do more than hold the fort for 1-2 years until they got the roster in a spot where a real OC candidate would want to come here. And while the overall returns weren't great, it seems AVP and his staff did enough of a good job with Maye that, despite the other roster holes, they made this a viable place to coach on offense. I think AVP did what it was fair to hope for him to do, and I'll always view his time here as positive in that regard. I never expected him to be our long term OC.
