Wouldn't restructuring his contract be the wiser thing to do if it can be done? He's our best lineman, why create another need?
Huh?
Thuney signed his one year franchise tag tender. He is locked in $14.78 mill guaranteed.
Only way to lower his cap number is trade or replace current 1 year deal with a new long term contract
Long term contract talks have gone nowhere

Has anyone else noticed that Belichick’s students aren’t following in Bill’s cheap a— ways? The Pats can’t pay a guard $15 million a year, but The Lions, Dolphins and Bucs all run by people who worked for Belichick apparently have no such reservations. I just find it interesting.

What’s the combined W-L of those three teams in the last 10 years ?

I am all for trading Thuney....but not to the freaking Dolphins...it's already bad enough that they have Flores, KVN, Roberts, and Karras.....for Miami...I ask for a first round pick...the same I would for the Jets/Bills. Anyone else, a 2 would be awesome...even a late 2nd...I like about 50 guys in this draft...and would love to double dip in that talent pool.
Though I agree with your sentiment, I don’t think we have the leverage to pull a 1st from anyone. The Fins first 2nd is pretty darn close though, and would provide some great ammo if we wanted to trade back up into the first for a coveted prospect on the 5 yr. deal. That would be the ideal scenario imo, if BB has the guys he wants. Chinn seems to be a riser, Kmet might go into the first (I prefer Traut). Imagine a scenario where 2 guys that can really boost our front 7 start falling down due to the rush that seems to be building for receivers, QB’s and now the Olineman. Might work to our advantage. Score an edge guy, and a rangy backer. That would be AWESOME!!! Remember the first game after we got HT & Jones? I want a repeat of that feeling!

Miami has significant needs at both left tackle and guard. It seems possible that they can move up to get the tackle they want and still have an interest in Thuney. I have to imagine that they would be more likely to move pick 56 or 70 for Thuney rather than pick 39, but that’s me just guessing.
If trading Thuney to the Dolphins, return has to be nothing less than 28 plus 56 or 70. Otherwise move on.

1) They have way more cap flexibility.
2) Are those winning organizations?
3) Do they win?
4) What’s the win-loss record of those organizations within the last 3-4 years?
5) Have they won anything?
6) Winning, they are? (Yoda voice)
7) Winning, they aren’t. (Yoda voice)

I'm thinking the Pats will look to trade Thuney. They have a gaping hole in the 2nd round without any selections. If they can get a late 1st that would be even better but might be hard to get that with him being tagged.

What if he doesn't want to be here? He could pretty much continue to hold this team hostage. The team did decide to tag him. But this is the worst case scenario. Paying a guard a top 5 salary for 2020.

If the Pats don't get any suitors, they may be forced to remove the tag and let him walk. (Correction by @KDPPatsfan85 - he signed his tender. Enjoy the gif).

That would make this one ugly off-season.

He already signed his tender. They cant remove the tag now.

Like your thoughts and agree except that I'd be pleasantly shocked if we got the 39th pick for Thuney. I don't expect anything near that great of a haul. Teams know that BB is up against the cap and since no extension is the word, he has to unload Thuney. Extensions to others will only open up enough to sign the draft class and pay for vets signed to fill inevitable injury voids.

OK we could do stuff like cut Cannon and save $ but eventually somebody has to fill those OL voids.
I have great hope that at least ONE of Frodholdt, Cajuste, and Elumanour will end up becoming a mainstay of our OL going forward, and even money that it's 2 of 3. If 2 become stalwarts along with Wynn, Mason, and Andrews we can have a decent OL with some depth from Cannon. In my ideal world we'd start the season with Wynn, Frodo, Andrews. Mason, and Cannon with Cajuste starting out as the swing OT and eventually taking over for Cannon as the season progresses, We' ve won superbowls with a lot less than that.

I like the optimism.

Our OL is fine even if Thuney is traded. You better deliver the football fast though. OL building is almost exclusively dependent on QB now. As an example people say RW has no Oline but his style of play, coupled with his salary, he never will. Brady made every Oline we ever had good. You can't have a Dallas Oline circa 2017 for free.

Great Tim and Eric sketch.

It’s interesting those franchises haven’t exactly had fantastic success.

Not exactly Stidham’s biggest strength, but if he can improve on that . . .

how can the pats be in cap trouble in BB is cheap?

When I said restructuring, I meant to a long term deal.
