Besides the fact that being on IR means you can't practice with the team, virtually every UDFA rookie under Belichick who went on IR ended up getting cut before the next draft. I hope the Patriots under Vrabel will give Lampe a second chance.

This isn't just a Patriots or Belichick phenomenon. Generally true around the league. And of all pro sports, the only one where marginal players have any kind of safety net that creates reasonable bounce back odds is MLB because of the minor leagues.

Bell isn’t a TE, he’s an H-Back. And unlike Spencer Rattler Maye can actually play football, and has much better options this season than he did last season.

This ^ is false. Develin was a smaller school prospect just like Lampe… the difference, Develin was a defensive end… 6’3” 260 pounds leaving college.

Lampe was a TE who converted to FB and he was 6’1” 244 pounds… but do you want to know the real difference? Strength… Lampe benched it 22 times leaving college, Develin 39 times. Develin was a beast… the strongest guy in his draft class. But sure… the same.

David Andrews and Brandon Bolden did not go on IR their rookie seasons, period. (Bolden was suspended for four games, though.) JaQuae Jackson is now a Charger, and Roberts didn't play a down for the Patriots.

David Andrews played 14 games as a rookie in 2015. He was NOT placed on IR that year.
Brandon Bolden played 10 games as a rookie. He missed 6 games because the team deactivated him for 2 and he was suspended for 4 by the NFL. Not placed on IR.
Darryl Roberts was IRed and then Waived in his rookie year, only to be claimed by the Jets. He played 12 games that year for them. So, it doesn't fit the scenario mentioned.
JaQuae Jackson - Was IRed. Never suited up for the Pats. Again. Doesn't fit.
Malcolm Butler was a UDFA. He was inactive for 5 games. He was not IRed. So that doesn't fit.

the NFL league rules are kind of grey here
especially for an undrafted free agent.
Lampe received a signing bonus, which he got all of his money.
an injury settlement would cover all, or portions of his remaining contract. the player must wait thru the duration of the covered settlement portion, plus typically 3 weeks.
Lampe could sign back with the Pats, or any team, after waiting out the covered allotted time frame
