Tyquan Thornton Having a Tough Camp

The first game of the season is a month away, we've just finished week one.

There's a lot of time between then and now, there's a lot of practices, joint practices and preseason.

Rome wasn't built in a day.
How long did it take to build Rome?
Hopefully it won't take as long to rebuild the Pats into a contender.

PS can carry the insurance RBm if concern about protecting developmental WR from being poached motivates carrying six.

Understood. But I think the team values a player in their system more than PatsFans posters. For example, blitz pickup by the RB. The RB is not simply a "name" on the PS for an emergency, but someone who knows the plays and their responsibilities. There are also incentive laden contracts and you screw with players earnings by bouncing them up and down from the practice squad. There are not a lot of veteran players on practice squads because the PS is a dead end unless the player is young and learning. Trey Flowers will be on a low dollar veteran contract, but that does not mean as low dollar as a PS contract. And there are egos to deal with as well. Players talk and will not sign with the Pats if the Pats are known to bounce veterans to the PS.

There are a lot of considerations other than the "PS rules" that dictate who can and can not be on the PS. Also every year, PatsFans over rates WR or TEs. J Meyers was bounced in a second for JJSS and posters were upset, but the Pats seemed to swap out Meyers without any concern once his rookie contract was up. Boutte might flash, but fans, for some reason, think flashing is more important than the professional GMs in the league.

Wouldn’t managing the roster must effectively be more important than whether a guy you arent sure you even want on it might have talked to other players who tell him the patriots move fringe players between active and ps to maximize results?
I mean do you really make concessions prevent guys you may not even want who gave no other options from knowing that?

Ty Montgomery over Bourne??

Completely agree.

When I was on the Cape last week, Greg Bedard was on the NBCSB late show and said of Monty: He'll be gone in a few weeks anyway...

We should All hope so.

Larry Fine, to Shemp: C'mon hurry up, we're waiting for you to read!

Shemp: Don't rush me, Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither was Syracuse.

Whether he was referring to Syracuse in Sicily (Not Greece!) or Syracuse in NY remains a mystery to this day...

Players are FAs and might not make logical decisions. Guaranteed money is most important, and some players are chasing a ring, and after that, there are lots of considerations for a GM to think about. I was trying to point out other considerations that might be lower priorities.

But those players aren’t ones that would go to the practice squad right?

One thing I'm not sure anybody has mentioned (apologies if someone has):

It's easier to stand out in practice as a WR with DD's skillset vs a WR with TT's skillset. The term "slot machine" exists for a reason. It's a role where 10 catches on Sunday is just another day at the office. TT's role offers more limited opportunities. He can't humanly run a fade 30 times in a practice and be effective throughout. As a slot WR with the appropriate skillset, you can absolutely stand out in practice from beginning to end.

Not taking anything away from Demario (I'm as hyped as anyone else), but putting the comparisons between him and Thornton in context.

That’s four WRs on the 53. Might leave room for one or at most two more, although with the relaxed PS rules that may be a full WR roster. That leaves Thornton, Boutte, Nixon, Montgomery, Malik possibly all looking in from the outside. Most likely I’d expect the last three to go to the PS. Maybe all of them, but Thornton and/or Boutte might make the 53 if there’s concern they’d be picked up by another team if cut. It’s hard to predict Bill but my guess is that of those two he’d be more likely to protect Boutte. Depending on what he thinks of what he’s seen so far, day in and day out. And injuries, plus performance over the next few weeks, could scramble the field entirely.

If Thornton gets beat out in camp and goes to the practice squad, isn't that just another indictment against our drafting of WRs? The Patriots seem to have no idea what we're doing and wound up maybe getting lucky with a Douglas in the 6th round.

A lot of that depends on Mac Jones. Are we going to see the promising young player of 2021 or the deer in headlights, clueless player of 2022?

I'm not worried about our defense as that's the deepest, most highly invested part of the squad, but our offense gives me a lot to WORRY about!

T Thornton woke up the last few practices he has a pulse there's something there.

If he gets beat out by Pop and Booty they’re both WRs we drafted. So maybe it’s a compliment to those drafts?

Maybe Syracuse, Sicily?

From the time Rome was established as a Republic in 509 BC to it becoming an empire in 31 BC, about five centuries. Some posters on this website are anticipating a similar timespan to rebuild the Pats into a contender.

Mac was clueless because his QB coach and OC were more clueless.

Yes, but that will never happen. Do you enjoy predicting absurd "doom and gloom" scenarios?

If Tyquan Thornton doesn’t pan out then he was the 4th-6th round WR that many scouting reports had him graded as, and goes down as yet another Jordan Richards level reach by BB. Could’ve had George Pickens or Alec Pierce, two guys who got taken where they were projected to go. I know everyone goes on about Pickens and I preferred him as well, but Pierce is just as capable of being the go-route guy that BB is hoping Thornton can be. Pierce is an incredible athlete and is bigger and better equipped for contested catches than Thornton with his wiry frame and tiny hands.

It’s a new season and hopefully Thornton can turn it around. I’m not holding my breath.
