Tyquan Thornton Having a Tough Camp

If conventional football practice stands, TT will not be cut or traded this year. So, they either:
1. force their organizational decision onto the roster at the expense of risking losing a potential like Boutte on waivers.
2. IR him for the year, in favor of the potential of Boutte.
3. Trade Bourne and roll the dice with Boutte in his role, while hoping TT provides the spark you need.
4. Keep all 6 WR's on the 53 - and make Boutte play ST.

Currently, I can see them carrying 6 WR's on the first 53, then during week 1, cut 1 to try to sneak them onto PS after all the teams have done their waiver scraping. While hiding a guy like Speed, Bolden, or Perkins through waivers and bring them back as the 53rd guy.

If they carry 6 WRs and just signed Trey Flowers, who are the two guys that fall off the 53?

The 4th RB; keeping just 8 OTs with Onwenu to PUP and Perkins /Jennings.

I do not think it would be wise to have 3 RBs - RB injuries are common. And with the state of our OL, it is risky to keep fewer. Not sure an extra WR that is deactivated on game day is that important.

It depends who the 3 are.
If it’s Rham, Zeke and Strong stick Harris on the practice squad.

If you are stuck with Montgomery on the roster I think you need 4.

That depends on who you had on the 53 before the 2 changes. We've got a thread discussing that issue. C'mon over.

What's interesting, is if MonTy is the odd man out - at least goes to IR dtr - then, it's conceivable to have only 3 technical RB, and 6 WR's - especially seeing how Douglas is contributing. And have a PS RB, or Zeke on the back burner.

The best chance to sneak Boutte onto the Practice Squad is on the day that 1000 players are cut/waived.
Agreed.

In any case, if he is worth a year of development, some other team will be willing to sign him off our Practice Squad.
Are teams still allowed to give their PS players raises if they're approached by another team?

To be clear, if we value Boutte enough to develop him for 2024, we would need to have him as a developmental player on the 53. There is room for a player or two like that. For me, the bottom line choice is whether we want to have Boutte or Thornton as a developmental player on the 53.

I've also wondered if all this eventually does indeed become an either Thornton-or-Boutte situation... Let's hope that both of them (and everybody else too) remain healthy enough to make that decision a harder one, if one even has to be made yet.

Flowers will go to the PS during final cut downs. He didn’t draw enough interest now to show any other team will pick him up when they’re all trying to reduce their rosters.

PS can carry the insurance RBm if concern about protecting developmental WR from being poached motivates carrying six.

I like Bourne so it’d be sad to see him traded or cut. But if he is the odd man out I can see Montgomery being kept as a WR who can play RB in a pinch if injuries mount up.

Something like: JuJu, Parker, Douglas, Thornton, Montgomery, Boutte

Rham, Strong, Harris, and would J.J. Taylor be PS eligible?

isn't everybody PS eligible these days?

I don’t see Bourne being odd man out. He is one of only three WRs on the squad that have produced consistently at the NFL level. 2022 was a down year for him and he still out-produced Tyquan:

Bourne 2022 season stats ; GAMES. 16 ; REC. 35 ; YDS. 434 ; TD. 1 ; AVG. 12.4.
Thornton 2022 season stats ; GAMES. 13 ; REC. 22 ; YDS. 247 ; TD. 2 ; AVG. 11.2.

Bourne catches/game 2.2; Thornton 1.7

Bourne got more yards per catch, more catches per game played.

If a PS player is approached by another team, the offer is to be on 53 man roster for at least 3 weeks. The player can accept or not. We are free to make a better offer. And yes, we can always raise a PS player to the $20K vet max and promise to have him on the roster a certain number of times to make staying with us more likely.

My concern is the cap hit (over $6 million) might make him expendable if BB doesn’t think he’s one of the top 3 WR’s on the roster. I hope he sticks around, I haven’t forgotten his 2021 performance or the fact that the receiving corps is woefully thin on experience outside of JuJu and Parker.

Tyler Thornton FLOPPING at training camp? BB failing to DRAFT a good WR yet again?

Wow, so Surprising... NOT!

Well there is good news - our 6th round picks look pretty decent. I'm betting that one of Demario Douglas or Kayshon Boutte end up making the 53.

Douglas is a lock; you can count on that. There is a reason that Troy Brown is spending so much time with him. Boutte is a mystery. He looked pretty good in camp, but is he good enough to displace someone else? Not sure.

FIFY.

Bourne has been in the NFL for 6 seasons. Juju has been in the NFL for 6 seasons. Parker has been in the NFL for 8 seasons. So the three of them are all experienced; you’re right, no other receiver on the roster is.

I’d be surprised if BB doesn’t view the three of them as the core of the receiver corps, at least until one of the others proves they are equally dependable under fire, in meaningful competition. So far none of them has.

Both Parker and Juju are signed for $33million for 3 years so Bourne’s $6million for the last year of his contract is a bargain. He’s in a contract year so he’ll be motivated. BB likes to take advantage of such situations. He’s more likely to keep Bourne than to dump him over his contract I think.

I don’t think Thornton is totally flopping. At least not ALL CAPS flopping. His problem is a numbers game. There are more guys trying to make the roster than there are roster slots available. Thornton has to show he is good enough to merit one of those roster slots. So far he’s not made a compelling case for himself. Pop Douglas certainly has.

BB doesn‘t put players on the field unless they’ve earned his trust. That’s why the three experienced veterans, Parker, Juju, and Bourne, will be the core of the receiver roster. All three can go outside, and Bourne and Juju can also play the slot. So those three would be enough for a gameday roster in a pinch.

Pop Douglas has made his case and staked his claim for a spot on the roster. I expect to usually see those four as gameday actives, with occasional PS callups active for specific matchups or to rest one of the starters especially if they need to heal.

That’s four WRs on the 53. Might leave room for one or at most two more, although with the relaxed PS rules that may be a full WR roster. That leaves Thornton, Boutte, Nixon, Montgomery, Malik possibly all looking in from the outside. Most likely I’d expect the last three to go to the PS. Maybe all of them, but Thornton and/or Boutte might make the 53 if there’s concern they’d be picked up by another team if cut. It’s hard to predict Bill but my guess is that of those two he’d be more likely to protect Boutte. Depending on what he thinks of what he’s seen so far, day in and day out. And injuries, plus performance over the next few weeks, could scramble the field entirely.

Can we just wait?
After this kid got drafted into the Patricia/Judge fiasco it'll probably take him more time to learn than usual.
