Two articles on the Globe about brady/obrien argument

He used to be a decent baseball guy when he wrote for the Herald. He knows NOTHING about football. Jet fans know more football than Mazz. He is now caught up with all the media crap on 98.5 and Comcast. He tries to be Felger II, but he's bad at it. The only time he has ANY credibility is when is is playing "Dirty Mazzarotti" in the morning.. He makes me ashamed to be a Tufts grad.

Tufts grad!?!
Great, can't stand the dweeb. Gotta return my BSEE

I just want to point out the obvious PC racial/ethnic double standard.

Why is it ok to insult the proud Irish people?

If, instead of smearing the Irish, Bedard had led a story with black stereotypes, he'd have been fired and blacklisted.

Why?

Context, that's why. Also history. The biggest difference is that there is no real racial undercurrent when someone writes an Irish stereotype in a Boston Globe article.

In similar fashion, if a black columnist, writing to a predominantly black audience referenced a black stereotype--one that black people by and large didn't even find offensive, at that--it wouldn't be a big deal either. Scoop Jackson does it all the time.

Context matters.

What is it with so many people here that disagreement with a writer's opinion has to be expressed in the form of utter defamation? Why can't you just say you didn't agree without destroying the guy? Happens all the time here - maybe you folks ought to take some of the observations Bedard and Mazz made to heart yourselves. Instead we get hyperbolic put downs that sound (in case you haven't been listening to yourselves) like children who, afraid to disagree with the crowd, flip the uncool kid a nasty name along with everyone else. The behavior has a simple name, it's called insecurity...

Mazz put's people down, we put him down, and you put us down for putting him down.

In the process of walking on holy water you've unintentionally joined that club of children your were referring to.

welcome aboard

Ok, it slightly off topic, but it relates to Mazz's show. Jermaine Wiggins just said a big difference between the Pats and Packers defense, is unlike the Pats' defense, the Packers defense is playing with huge leads and giving up a lot of yards and that is why they look so bad. Seriously, even if are a defense hater will admit the Pats have given up a ton of yards in garbage time this year.

I said it before and I will say it again, if I didn't know Wiggins played 8 years in the NFL, I would think he has seen his first NFL game this season. He must just be incredibly stupid.

He does indeed have a point when he argues the Packers' defense has played with larger leads with more frequency than ours has this season. How could you disagree?

Having a team get pass happy isn't a bad thing taking the turnover potential into account coupled with a superior pats offense. redzone D is usually better, I only remember the TOP being a problem with pitt and the skins could be others I forget.

BB doesn't seem to have pass yards allowed as a high priority, statistically it's always been slightly weighted that way. I see it as intentional not to this degree but overall, anyways open to thoughts.

Read this...

Boston Herald Apologizes To Patriots – Is It Enough?

The week before the Super Bowl, I and hundreds of thousands of other Patriots fans in the NE area within listening range of WEEI listened as Tony Massarotti first declared "I speak for all Patriots fans" and followed that up with "all Patriots fans are morons who can't think for themselves" and in print, mindless lemmings who have filled football stadiums in Foxboro from September through January since Mr. Kraft took over the franchise..

First off, I can only speak for myself. He's a liar and a punk.I've met him in a public setting and told him to his face what I think of him. He begged off and backed down. His main interest is HIS career and doing whatever it takes to further it, no matter what journalistic lengths he has to go to...or stoop to.He wrote a scathing hit piece on Kraft ,BB and the organization based on John Tomase's "scoop" the week of the Super Bowl. Tomase's column was 100% FALSE. The Herald made a tepid apology as you can read.Massarotti NEVER took responsibility for what he put in print, based on 100% total bullshyt.I'm not insecure....I'm STILL angry. Personally, I take offense when someone urinates down my back in print and tries to tell me it's raining .

Maybe if that is what he said, but he said the Packers play with huge leads where they give up yards and the Pats don't. You are making a completely different argument than what Wiggins made.

Besides, how many games have the Packers play with a huge lead than the Pats? Maybe two or three. The Pats had sizable leads and gave up significant garbage time yards to the Dolphins, Chargers, Raiders, Jets (both games), Chiefs, Eagles, and Colts. That is eight out of 13 games where the Pats gave up significant garbage time yards. In many cases like the Dolphins, Colts, and Eagles, the Pats gave up a lion share of their yards after the Pats had multiple TD leads in the fourth quarter.

Yup.

Plus I don't think there are any bars in West Newbury. Unless by "watering holes" he literally means "watering holes" — as in for cows and horses.

(Really, what Bedard wrote didn't offend me; just thought it was a bit surprising to see in such sensitive times).

I guess in 2011 I shouldn't be shocked to see such a thorough example of PC brainwashing.

The way I see it, it's one standard for all races/ethnic groups, or it's a free for all. Apparently, it's all fun and games to smear the Irish, but replace the Irish with the blacks or the Jews and careers get destroyed.

Who's in charge in this country? I guess not the Irish ...

Well, this thread got off the tracks real fast.

Are we seriously talking about one line about an Irish stereotype? :bricks:

There's a plethora of reasons no one makes a big deal about it. Notably, that there isn't inheirently negative about what Bedard said. He just intimated the two guys were fiery. He didn't say anything negative. That's a huge difference.

Anyway, putting that silly tangent aside - I think it's rather clear that Bedard once again delivers thoughtful and insightful material, as always. Yet, his counterpart at the Globe, is basically trying to jack up ratings for 98.5.

Tony Masseroti has never been known for his football smarts, let's just leave it at that. What's disapointing is that you can hardly locate Bedard's articles on the Globe's haphazard website. His gems get buried while they pump up Masseroti's TMZ-style trash.

Well, some would say tying drinking and fighting into a comment about the Irish is a bit negative. But we Irish also are known to have a good sense of humor and so I thought it was actually a good piece of writing/context by Bedard. Hey, to me, raising a (humorous?) eyebrow on Bedard's lede is on about the same level as how big a fuss people are making over the whole BOB-TFB spat; all kind of silly really, right?

I totally agree with you on Bedard. He's an excellent observer of football; one of the few writers whose game-day tweets are worth following. He's not a fanboy like Rapoport and he doesn't have the Breer snark; when he has something critical to say, it carries weight — as do his positive comments.

Patriots Time of possession for the 2011 season is a horrid #27 out of 32 teams.

Only St.Louis, Seattle, Arizona, Tennessee, and Indy are below them.

It's no coincidence that at least 7, maybe 8 out of the top 10 teams will be in the playoffs.

BB's proving stats are for losers more and more each year, if he gets away with lopsided TOP's and high passing yards allowed in the PO's I'll be impressed. What's the win ratio when teams have lower TOPs? besides ours lol, cherry picking the worst case scenario seems popular.

nothing we do counts LMAO

The longer the D helps opposing teams keep Brady off the field, the harder it's gonna be for the Pats to win anything.

NOT!

Are you just begging me to "insult" you? Maybe I'll let Captain Obvious handle this one.

You seriously can't be serious with this?

Go to sports.yahoo.com and actually look at the box score.

Captain Obvious would like to point something out.

Patriots- FIVE scoring drives in FOURTEEN MINUTES.

Imagine that, a "hurry up" offense actually out there like scoring....quicker. Who'd thunk that one?

Captain Obvious would also make note of.......

6 teams hold the ball little.

Of those 6 teams, 5 don't score. 1 team scores more than anybody.

Isn't that obvious?

Captain Obvious actually worries about scoring because scoring more points at the end of the game seems to be important toward who actually wins the game.

That's why Captain Obvious tends to place importance on scoring vs not so important things like total yards and time of possession.

Another thing Captain Obvious notes is if the offense holds the ball for a minute and scores.........the defense will get back on the field. Captain Obvious is not aware of any sustained special teams time of possession scenario.....well, at least it's not that obvious.

I thought Bob Kraft's (they were speaking Gaelic) comments were hilarious, and I'm sure done only to underscore the tempers of Brady and O'Brien in a humorous way.
