Not a consistent game changer? What? Did you watch the postseason? Rivers, Mahomes and Goff were running for their lives. They got smashed.

It looked as though it was more of a collective team effort than just one guy.

Maybe but if that happened that sounds like a pretty unprofessional thing to do by an agent. Especially because he will get more commission from Flowers' deal than whatever he made from representing BB.

It was a team effort, but in their system Flowers is a great player, not because of stats but because of his ability to play numerous roles. That said Detroit blew everyone out with their offer and it wasn’t going to be matched.

This isn’t the Red Sox we’re talking about. Hit pieces have been few and far between although they have happened.

He was the one that stirred that drink. Teams had to commit guys to him so that you even had nobodies like Simon applying pressure. Clayborn and Shelton for heaven's sake. Flowers was a wrecking crew and he will be missed badly. I have no doubt about that.

By the way, he's 25. It may not be the last time you see him in a Pats uniform.

Couldn’t have asked for a more professional player and apparently great human being. Flowers was one of my favorite players and made a huge impact on this team.

The defensive end market sucks. I think the deal Flowers got is around where Miller or Mack belong among the very top players. Teams are just massively overpaying. It may be true that it’s critical to get to the passer, but there are also a lot players capable of doing that, evidenced by FIVE free agents getting the franchise tag and Flowers breaking the bank. Sucks to depart with a player who you know would be more valuable here than where he’s going, as usual.

Wilkerson on a cheap 1 year deal (like he signed last year with Green Bay) and Houston for ~$10-12m would be nice.

I think Patricia knew that flowers would be open to a home town discount, so just 1m or 2m more per year wouldn’t get him to leave pats, he had to make the gap bigger to bring him on

In my opinion the Pats could've made a better effort to keep Flowers, hell yeah he is that good. We always complain that we don't have a shot at top players in the top 15 of the draft, then we develop a guy that is just as good as what is projected for those stellar DE's then we let him leave, a proven player, also, the guy is a class act, not a thug who make threats about holding up for money.

If the money is really 16/17 per year, that's not even an overpay. That's a fair money for a guy like him, I thought some team would be willing to throw 20Mi at him, that would be an overpay but you never know, the contracts are going up every year, there is no recession. 15mi would be a discount, some mentioned his value is 13/14, I think you guys are out of touch regarding the NFL FA market and tendencies for teams signing certain free agents.

Another factor, Flowers is only going to get better, as a matter of fact I think he is gonna become a monster DE and this is going to be Akiem Hicks to the 10th power. I don't think he is gonna sit on that contract, he wouldn't playing for the Patriots, now in a disfunctional franchise like the Lions you never know, he probably becomes a cap issue if they stay mediocre 2 or 3 years down the road. On the Pats his value would stay on the top of the market barring injuries.

I love BB's philosophy and I would rather not having big signings in FA and competing for the SB every year than the opposite, but the times of discounts are over, we are not going to be able to retain players below market value anymore. Brady is on a discount, Gronk is on a discount, Edelman is on a huge discount, McCourthy signed for top of the market so did Gilmore. The elephant in the room is signing a right guard for top of the market, but that is for other thread (I think it's time to extend Thuney and I'm gonna open a thread specific for that discussion).

I don't know, make some moves but gotta find a way to keep a special player like Flowers, still young, going to hit his prime, he is only 25 and played only 3 seasons, the 1st one was a redshirt year for him.

Now a guy like Trent Brown, let him leave, he is not gonna perform on what he is gonna get paid on that contract.

There is a very deliberate approach to payroll, the cap, acquiring players and assigning value that has been in place here for 19 years with better results than anyone in the sport has ever achieved.
I understand the angst of losing a good player, but I don’t agree the formula should be changed.
We already adding his replacement in Bennett. It’s a downgrade but it’s at a fraction of the cost, and other upgrades will happen with the difference.
I think the part of the formula that people just don’t seem to get is that the a tram is the sum of its parts. Flowers taking up 2 mill of cap was great for us and helped us win. Flowers taking up 15 mil would still play great but by definition would detract, compared to last year, 13 million of value from the rest of the roster.
Will Belichick find other pieces with that money to make the sum of the parts enough to compete for a championship? I’d have to say yes based upon the track record.
