Trey Flowers: “We’ve got six, we want seven.”

If Flowers' agent is smart, that agent should be telling him that it's not about that big total number at the end. 4/100. 4/125. 5/120. Whatever. How many of these big buck contracts make it to the end without a cap-reducing extension? Agents should be talking real, attainable earnings with their clients, not these inflated back-end loaded deals that (almost) never pan out.

Flowers isn't a baseball player.

I'm sure he wants to come back, but I don't see how the pats can afford him, unless they are willing to let both hightower and McCourty go next year. If neither rework their deals this year, they both will be cut next if Flowers is signed.

mccourty is going to be a 33 year old FA.......if he comes back, it won't be for a ton of money

hightower has 2 years left so it's not really a concern right now

I don't know what to think I hope Flowers get 3oMill Guaranteed over the First Couple of years. I think Collins got like 26Mill guaranteed from the Browns.

Also knowing that the First two years are basically a slam dunk for the player. Year Three is always telling whether a player sees the rest of that contract or not. Back loaded contracts should be a no no in the NFL it's not in the best interest of the player.

there's a limit to the backloading that can be done....but it's about the guaranteees.......signing bonuses that are pr-rated by year become immediately due upon release......roster bonuses are the ones where a player needs to be on the roster on a certain day to get it.

It’s not at all unrealistic that a player will take an offer that isn’t the most money because of other factors.

sure.

The family might like the weather in FL better, or the fact that there are no income taxes

I do think that giving a discount to the current team is more likely after the first major contract is in the bank. Also, this also happens more with old vets who want a shot at a Super Bowl.
=====
But, sure, Flowers might not take the very highest offer. There may be some value to him in being on a competitive team, or in him believing in the coach or the defensive system.

IMO many pros are just businessmen and I am ok with that. There are a few examples like Brady,Raul Gonzales (Real Madrid), Larry Bird or Magic Johnson who are also attached to the one club, destined to be the icons. Personally I realy appreciate them because of the "loyalty" not so popular in the contemporary world. I know very often they are millionaires and one million more or less could mean nothing for them. But I am believed for many fans it means a lot. Speaking of Flowers I am not saying he is coveted to be an icon for the Pats' fans ( or maybe he is ) but if he feels Foxborough is a home he would skip one or two million per year to stay with us. His words is a signal to me that Patriots is his first choice but BB should offer him descent amount of money. Descent means satisfying him as a player nit necessarily to be the biggest offer. I know it is a bit sentimntal but I hope Flowers is a tender and smart guy thinking that way.

I think your opinion downplays the value of being in a winning culture coached by coaches who help you be a better player.

I’m not saying you take 4/20/10 over 4/60/30. But a lot of players would take 4/55/28 over 4/60/30 to be in the right place.

I was using 25 as one-third of the total value but you're correct that it could be higher. Traditionally the Pats like to put lots of not likely to be earned bonuses to defer costs season to season. Without a CBA extension those might not be deferred so it will be interesting.

Aaron Donald got $87m guaranteed. Now, Donald is the best in the league, but $25 won't cut it for Flowers, I don't think.

Nobody (or nobody smart) making that kind of change gives a rat's ass about a few % state income tax. 5% on a million $$$ is $50k, or a moderately bad day on the market for someone making that kind of money.

The money in the top-end contracts is more about ego (and agents) than the actual extra few million.

Yeah, lot of hopeful signs he might be back.
I think Belichick considers him the most important defensive player, even more than Gilmore.
The defense will take a step back, even with the GOAT HC, if Flowers leaves.
Trey is no cjones or Collins, he's 2x the player either ever dreamed of being.
If he's back, with HT now healthy,Bentley maybe contributing and of course our killer secondary led by yes, the best cb in the NFL, this can be a really good D.

Bob Socci is the latest to remind us that Flowers has the same agent as Belichick, which can’t hurt.

Reiss predicts that the Patriots will re-sign Flowers.

Predictions for all 32 NFL teams' top free agents

If Flowers re-signs a "below market value contract" how many draft picks will we lose due to conspiracy to maintain league domination?
That said, I think Trey will give the Pats the last chance to match any offer he receives. Most likely through Caserio then Belichick lol.

Why? They have 55 players under contract and 24m in cap space.

If they sign all 12 picks that will take another 3m more or less of cap space according to Miguel.

The leaves 21m to sign Flowers, is that amount enough?

We have many needs. Spending everything in flowers is technically possible but woukd leave enormous holes across the roster.

ALL that matter is the gtd money.

Let's say they give him a 5 year deal 35m sign bonus.

His APY could be: 9/10/16/19/21 (15m APY). That leaves 12m for other FA.

They already have 55 players signed and 12 more draft picks, so they will cut players and extend others and this number will increase.

If Flowers leave i repeat it is not about the APY, it will be because Bill don't see him as a 15m player.
