Cassel doesn't intrigue me in the least. Dude is one of the worst QBs in the league. Ditto Tebow.
You're looking for a backup. Cassel was a borderline Pro-Bowl caliber starter in 2010. That's more than adequate for a backup. The question to be asked, IMO, is whether the Patriots think they can get his head right.
True. But I think you also need to be looking for Brady's heir, whenever that time may come. I've always been a bit (perhaps) irrationally exuberant when it comes to Mallett, but I really like what he offers if he can get the mental aspect of the game down (I wholeheartedly reject the argument that he's not a fit for the system).
Our ‘small ball’ offense is a complete mismatch for Mallett, short-range but very accurate passes are what we’re all about, Mallett has a cannon arm and LOVES to air it out, and has been very inconsistent in his accuracy, which is not surprising considering his inconsistent mechanics. He’d be a good fit for the Raiders, who have traditionally been all about launching it downfield, and they have the speed receivers to do it.
I want AJ McCarron, Brad Sorensen also seems interesting, but not Mallett, send him packing.
Then another question is would the Patriots be happier with Mallet at $800K or a third/fourth pick plus Cassell at $5-6mm. I think the answer to that is no. A mid-round draft pick is not worth $5mm in cap space.

Now it may be that the coaching staff recognizes that Mallett doesn't/will never have what it takes to succeed in the NFL, in which case I agree he should be dealt. It could also be that the time horizons of Brady's eventual retirement and Mallett's ascension are mismatched, in which case he should also be dealt. But I think prudence dictates that we should be looking for someone who is a.) a capable backup and b.) eventually able to take over at the position once Brady is gone.

The idea has merit. Tebow and Cassel should be available next year, so QBs that have worked with McDaniels could be brought in. You can take Kansas City off of your list though. I don't see any way that team's front office can sell another New England QB to the fan base.
That's a product of who we have on the team. Not the system.
Hoyer - UDFA
Mallett - highly rated 3rd rounder
Spot the difference. Not to mention the weakness of this years draft class. I mean there might be not even one franchise QB in this draft. Cassel will be available and we know he works in this system.
Mallett was drafted high in the 3rd round. He was actually a first round talent who had off of the field concerns. He was clearly better than; Gabbert, Locker and Ponder. He played better than those guys in college. And, he did it in the SEC. He's kept his nose clean for two years here. Pun intended. Even has gotten himself in better physical condition. Sleeker and more toned than he was coming out of Arkansas. Not sure he's going to be a good pro. I think he's better than the guys coming out this year and allows you to use your first on rebuilding your ol. Would like to see him get a shot though. I think Arizona would be the best spot for him. They suck at qb. He's got an all pro receiver in Fitzy. Doucet can play. If Michael Floyd gets his act together, that can be a nice troika. The knock on Kolb in Philly was that he checked off too soon. Didn't throw downfield. Was the same in Arizona. Ryan is more of a gun-slinger and will throw downfield and back defenses off of the LOS. They have a terrible OL too. Allows them to spend their 1st round pick on someone to block for him. I'd like to get a 2nd in this draft. With a conditional pick next year based on performance.
Tebow no.
Is there another word even more direct than no?
I'll take that word.
