Trade up to 1 - what would it take?

We are going to need to restock at multiple positions. We need depth at TE, LB, OL, and WR. We absolutely do not have the assets to be trading up.

Honestly I about half expect Bill to trade down, sacrifice a good-but-not-great draft position to someone else desperate to grab their binky, in order to load up with future picks and lower round selections to allow us to get younger and cheaper at a number of key positions.

If we have true conviction on a guy as a future franchise qb and the price is reasonable we need to get that player. I understand the need to restock the cupboard but given the needs we need to get the qb position taken care of (within reason, don’t go crazy with an overpay) and then go from there.

what you don't want to do is get into a situation where you have to choose entirely between one or the other -- because whichever need you don't fill will come back to bite you hard within the next 5 years.

Has Lawrence declared for the draft ? If he doesn't like Jacksonville, he can stay in school. Peyton Manning did that in 1997.

Lawrence has indeed officially declared...Now all the Jags have to do is the smart thing: draft Trevah and banish all thoughts of Urban Meyer & Justin Fields.

The draft chart has some value in giving a rough guide, but it always depends on the circumstances e.g. the willingness to move down, how many competitors to trade up there are etc. QBs also always increase the cost. Ultimately it would take a boatload to move from 15 to 1 as Jax would be giving up a potential franchise QB to move down to a place where they likely couldn't pick a blue chipper. You are talking at least two future first rounders, two seconds, and Gilmore, and that's still probably not enough.

Even getting to Cincy's 5 pick is gonna be expensive. If you go by the principle that a pick next year is worth a round lower, then it's going to at least take the following (the trade chart gap is 650 points): Pick 15 (1050 points), pick 46 (440 points), next years second (220 points). But we know that given it would be for a QB and there are going to be many suitors, next years 1st would likely have to be part of the deal. The Jets for example traded 6, 37, 49 and a future second just to move from 6 to 3 in the 2017 draft.

You just get the sense that this isn't really part of Bill's philosophy, although he might be willing to change if he really thinks one of these guys is a true franchise player.

Assuming we had brady in prime, Brady + belichick + 2 1s will not net the first pick this year..

We are in unchartered territory with no qb or no playmakers... and a middle round draft with recent history not being kind.

If belichick helps to turn the pats fortunes within next 2 seasons it will solidify the GOAT status, else if brady wins and we continue to wallow, there is going to be some serious debate...

The last « sure fire » was Luck and I don’t know how much is give up for that career.

The only way I see is trading up in round#1 is for Florida TE Kyle Pitts who is by far the best TE prospect in the draft.

I would give the farm for Lawrence, but that’s not Belichick’s style.

I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Belichick trade back & take Alabama QB
Mac Jones.

I also love Zach Wilson, but his passing is not as accurate as Jones, although he does
Have far better running ability.

When I watch Tape of Wilson, his receivers are open by a mile, but they always have to slow down for the pass. His highlights show very few passes hitting players in stride.

Jones is very accurate & usually hits his receivers in stride.

Zach Wilson connected on 73.5% (Jones was at 77.4 %) of his passes this year, that’s phenomenal. Wilson also has a much stronger arm than Jones. He also didn’t have DeVonta Smith or Najee Harris on his team.

The difference between the 2 is that Wilson makes nobodies into somebodies. He might actually be able to turn N’Keal Harry into a decent NFL receiver. I like Jones a lot, but he needs to have stars on his team. I don’t think he can create on his own like Wilson can.

Basically, there’s a reason why Wilson will be drafted higher than Jones, he’s just a better and more talented player. Though I would not complain with Jones at 15. I prefer we trade UP for Wilson though.

Somebody working for the Patriots would need to kidnap the families of the Jaguars' GM owner. Seriously, there is no possible way with the assets we have. Maybe if he turns out to be mediocre we could pick him up in four or five years. That is the only way we are getting him. We had our chance. We could have tanked and gone winless. I am glad we didn't. Even if four years from now Lawrence is hands down the best QB in football.

You're not doing this right with all due respect. You don't give up anything for his career. His career is touched, shaped aand molded by competent coaching and front office, OL play and supplemental help like a running game or defense. Did Luck have any of that? What about "weapons"? That's all I've heard the last two years, no one can win with these weapons?

You give up something for his potential, not career. Not sure how someone looks at it that way when landing spot effects a QB for than any position by far.

Thx. I did mean Luck. He - like Ricky Williams - is an example that even sure things can fail to live up to massive expectations. They are excellent examples of why you shouldn’t give up everything to get « the sure thing ».

Luck, the playoff INT machine, wasn’t anything near what experts believed he’d become. He was a good player who’s best accomplishment was getting steamrolled in the AFCCG.

Let me explain something, the only way the Jags trade away the first this year is if they are guaranteed an elite QB in the trade that is young. Watson, Mahomes, Jackson, Allen could get it done along with another 1st (in addition to the swap) and mutiple 2nds.

We have quite literally nothing to offer them. The 15 is worthless to them in context. The only players we could realistically package are Gilmore (who is 30 and on the last year of his contract) and Thuney who we need to franchise anyways (so both aren't good deals as Jacksonville would need to work contracts relatively shortly to keep them).

We literally could trade away this entire draft and next years first and Gilmore and Thuney and Jacksonville would be stupid to take the trade.

Yes. He did get hurt towards the end of the season. But can you imagine having those two OT for years ? I think can’t miss OLs often have a better success rate than can’t miss QBs. And I think there are good QBs drafted throughout the rounds, while many elite OTs are first rounders.

Seriously though what would it take? By the draft value chart assuming the Pats again pick at #15 or so in the 2022 draft, the “fair” deal by draft value would be both our first and second this year and next year + a late pick in exchange for Jacksonville’s first this year. For sure other teams will be giving the Jags a call anyway so that might not do it. Maybe start by adding someone like Stidham or even Gilmore too?

Not saying they should do this but fun to speculate what it would take.

The Pats don't have the trade capital to trade up to #1. Their best shot is if one of the other top QBs fall several spots and end up closer to the tail end of the top ten picks.

The Pats have a better shot at trade for Deshaun Watson than trading for Trevor Lawerence.

I understand if a new coach wants a QB but pairing these two (Sewell - Becton) up is very intriguing. I'd keep Becton at LT and make Sewell really beat him out for that position fwiw.
