TONY ROMO effect on the SB....

Now if Romo came out and predicted the failed flea flicker, then I would be impressed.

He kinda did. Right before that play he said something about "the Patriots could do just about anything here." It was a situation where the playbook was wide open and Romo saw that coming at least, if not exactly what the Pats would try to do.

Tony Romo was a pretty good quarterback whose profile was exaggerated slightly because of the team he played for.

But he is very quickly maturing into an absolutely AMAZING analyst and booth personality. This is a man who was already borderline elite in one field and has transcended that entirely after transitioning to the booth. He's incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining, and I hope he stays in that job for years to come.

What I don’t understand is how other color commentors like Aikman, who were better QBs and presumably better at reading defenses, can’t do the same level of analysis. Am i missing something?

It is entirely possible that the TV crews for the national broadcast get more access but I'd be shocked if they were allowed to be present for anything that would be sensitive information. Being there for the part of the walk through where some of the common plays are being rehearsed is one thing. But I can't imagine a team letting external people watch portions of walkthroughs or attend meetings where really relevant or surprising things are shown.
ok we're on same page. i wasnt implying they get anything sensitive...but given Romo's experience and being able to see walk through give's him some addtl info on how a play develops. anyway's all good. go pats #youretooOLD

You are indeed. Romo was a good QB but also he always had that showmanship to his style. A pure athlete isn't always going to be able to articulate his insight but Romo was a PR natural so he can.

Another guy I'd absolutely love to see in the booth when he hangs it up is JE11. He has that gift of gab (there's a reason the networks always wire him up) and you don't get as far as he has as a short white receiver unless you know a few things about the game..

Any NFL-caliber head coach worth anything or experienced, good NFL quarterback should be able to read the plays/coverages he sees as good or better than Tony Romo.

And have access to more film too than the stuff we see I would think.

If the best guy in the business is double digit negative for you I don't want to hear your scores on Fouts or Gannon.
I know some people on here think he's great, but I can't stand him. If he just stuck to X's and O's and technical chit chat then maybe I would like him better, but most of the time I find him to be the quintessential "Captain Obvious" and annoying.

Do you also wonder if Brady has a magical ability to look 1-2 seconds into the future when he is at the LOS ?

Romo just studied some NE tape & tendencies and the rest is reading coverages from the press box. He isn't doing anything that any NFL level QB could not do as well. I mean it doesn't require some kind of magical skill to distinguish cover 2 from cover 1 and then their respective weaknesses given what the Pats have on the field. Especially not for someone who has done that while pass rushers were coming his way and from a much worse angle for years.

Romo doesn't stick out because he is some wizard but because 90% of the other crews are just absolute garbage at the same thing and instead talk about irrelevant stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 90% of other crews are bad on purpose, like the networks always figured that the general audience was too stupid for real football talk and they resisted putting an analyst who knows something in. The networks are really bad in how they underestimate the intelligence of their audiences.

All the former QBs (and many other players) could do it. I firmly believe the reason why so many color commentators act so dumb is because they are told to by the networks. The networks are desperately afraid that commentators getting too into Xs and Os will bore viewers. I believe some retired color guys have in fact said this.

I'm hoping that the good response to Romo will result in a change in what networks will let color guys do.

If you need Romo to help you game plan you're either unemployed or working for the Jets in which case you'll shortly be unemployed again.

if the pats decide to assume they're playing the chiefs again.........

if they don't figure the same things out watching game films, they're going to get killed even worse than I thought
I agree. Any coach should be able to decipher film as good, if not better than Romo.

And I think what makes him look so good, as a commentator, is that the others are just so bad

or maybe the way was going and it being against the chiefs, it may be more obvious to a pro......either way, it is not an issue

My friend had the great idea of creating a service where you could pick from like 10 different set of announcers. Some people would want really hardcore technical analysis, other people would want the fan view, others a team-centric (like pro-Patriots) context, some just a minimalist play-by-play without color, other people want to hear a couple comedians get drunk and call the game, etc.

The Pats game plan is, that whatever they have on tape is not what you are gong to be seeing. I think the key to the game, is not to make any defensive shifts until the play clock gets under 15 seconds so McVay can't tell Goff what's going on.

+ send everything you have on the pass rush & Goff will hand you over the game

If Romo were covering the first Super Bowl fifty plus years ago, he could say "this looks like a good time for the Packers to run the power sweep" and be right at least half the time.

You folks are aware that he is not sitting there for practices. He comes by with the rest of the media when they all have access at the beginning (or sometimes end of practice sessions) plus the production meeting where sometimes coaches/players are a bit more open about answering questions.

But it is not like he is sitting and watching the Rams or Patriots go through their practice sessions.
I'm not sure about that. Sometimes after a big play you hear an announcer say they watched them practice it that week.

You're talking about the Patriots here. Bill Belichick. S**t is on lock down like Fort Knox.
