Do you want Will Campbell at 4 assuming Hunter and Carter are off the board?

We just don't want to hear that we aren't drafting for need when the consensus among most is that Will Campbell is not BPA at 4.
if drafting following wolfs new scouting system gets you campbell at 4, then release wolf and throw that system out of the window

Nobody knows anything about any teams board. Every website is different. Of course teams boards are going to be, as well. It is absolutely within the realm of possibility Campbell is the top guy left on the Patriots board at 4.

Same applies to Graham, Walker, McMillan, Jeanty, Membou, and possibly even Warren. Just because someone is ranked #8 on a website doesn't mean they aren't #4 on a specfic teams board.

Premium positions get extra value. Left tackle is a Premium position. If the Patriots take an OL at 4, it's to play left tackle.

I have no problem with Campbell at #4 if that is the way the Pats go. But I don't see Campbell as BPA, I see Campbell as a slight reach at a position of need, even a premium position because OTs are tough to find.

Ideally #4 in the draft could be left on an island at LT. Campbell is not that good. He is far far better than we have had in years, but not a #4 generational player.

I dont disagree.

But nobody at 4 is going to be a generational player. You can only rank and draft who's available to you. I WISH Alt or Nabers were available. Unfortunately they're not.

I also thing most would agree a trade down is ideal, but it may not be possible.

So if you have to draft at 4, where do you go?

Do you take a 5'8 211lb RB with a lot of wear and tear to run behind a poor OL?

A borderline wr1 that doesn't have elite speed?

An edge rusher rusher with less than 10th percentile height, weight, and length?

A pudgy, sub 300lb DT with short arms?

Taking a tight end as high as any TE has ever been drafted, without verified athletic numbers?

A guy that's only played RT, that's struggled with speed at RT, most think should stay at RT, and may have maturity concerns?

There's a negative angle to every single prospect the Patriots will consider drafting. None are generational. But there's an argument any of them could be BPA on a teams drsft board at #4. SOMEONE has to come after Carter and Hunter on teams boards. I dont see why it couldn't be the guy with the best chance to be an impact starter at a premium position of that group of guys.

So you’re all in on drafting Ashton Jeanty then? He’s the consensus no 3 prospect not including QBs.

The default should be Campbell, a proven LT with intangibles as well.
The 2nd option is trade-down if they think Banks or another top 5 LT can do the job as well as Campbell can.
The 3rd option is Membou converting to LT if the coaches think he can do it. He's a beast.
The other option is to not take a LT with our first pick, and trade up from 38 to get one. Not keen about the risk of this option.

Applies equally to Graham and Walker if he plays as an edge.
True - but this was the “official” Will Campbell “take ‘em or leave ‘em” thread…

no Mason Graham was the consensus BPA and that hasn't changed for me. Membou is closer to BPA than Campbell so if we were stuck it being that side of the ball because we addressed DT in FA then I'd be happy with Membou.

Simmons without the injury
A Patella Tendon injury for a big man is substantial
A lot more concerning than a ACL
You would be drafting a player with a high pick with a big question mark
If we're good with Simmons meds I'd go him > Campbell. I would lean Membou as well. There's a few other guys I'm tryna wrap up my initial ptp board now.

By “default” I mean the most conservative non-controversial decision - not necessarily the best decision. Taking Membou as a conversion project would be the most controversial but maybe the best.
This is where the coaches will have to earn their pay more than the front office, making the right call on this.

Morgan Moses is 34 so an argument could be made that we need a RT for the future still.
Matt Light was already a year into his retirement. Just sayin. If MM is active for every game this upcoming season, I will do a dance of happiness. But I tend to doubt it.

Everyone we would be considering at 4 has warts - either positon, skills, medical, injury.

Campbell - short arms, might be a guard
Membou - never played left tackle. Might also be a guard.
Jeanty - great player but RB is a luxury pick.
Graham - short arms, limited physical traits.
Walker - tweener with no clear position. Only one year college producer.
Warren - positional value and ceiling questions Some have Loveland higher.
Simmons - serious injury concerns. Also questions about level of competition.
McMillan - speed and athleticism issues. Concerns about love of the game.
Williams - production doesn’t match physical traits
Stewart - production doesn’t match physical traits.

Given all this, you may as well take i) the position of greatest need , and ii) someone with as few risks/flags as possible. Campbell by all accounts is a great prospect in every way bar his arm length. That might of course be his downfall but the alternatives don’t look super enticing either. I’ve been on board the Walker train but it leave us in desperation mode finding a left tackle.
