BPA can't work if you're going to religiously observe a numbered ranking system. In other words, if you think you must draft your no 3 ranked player ahead of your no 4 ranked player. BPA only works if you're basing it upon tiers like below:

Tier 1: Carter, Hunter
Tier 2: Jeanty, Graham, Warren, Campbell, Membou, Walker
Tier 3: Green, M Williams, Loveland, McMillan, Golden, Nolen

In this scenario, if anyone from tier 1 is on the board take the prospect that best suits positional and roster value. However, you must take from tier 1

If everyone from tier 1 is off the board, you pick the prospect from tier 2 that best suits your needs. If there are a number of prospects from tier 2 on the board, you can trade down.

If you trade down, you must select from a player from tier 2 before moving on to tier 3.

1. Who's BPA? A consensus board? Or the teams?
The BPA is the player I pick. In this case Graham.
2. This is a very strong DT class. If you take Graham at 4, what do you do if Derrick Harmon falls to 38 or Tyleik Williams is the best player on your board?
We are onto Cincinnati. That is a clever way to say don't worry about tomorrow, plan for today.
3. Why Mason Graham and not Ashton Jeanty?
Good question. I think Graham is more disruptive.
4. What do you do about LT if at each point you pick in the draft, a LT is not the BPA?
Another good question. Good thing I am not a GM, I am a poster on PatsFans.

Here’s a thorough scouting report on Will Campbell, you can find more over on The Athletic. They have a great guide there, very much worth it.

It would be interesting to see you stack your board in terms of the tier system I laid out above.

BPA is tough because you definitely have to make an exception for QB, and with LT so scarce, probably LT too.

So I understand the attraction of Campbell even though an "athletic Matt Light" at #4 is silly. That is why I say if you have to break the BPA rule and go LT, at least pick Membou (I know the RAS scores are the same but watch the film) because Membou will be a tackle long term (Campbell might be a guard).

The draft board obviously is not set in stone from start to finish. You have to adjust pick to pick. You also have to take into account what teams picking around you might do.

In round 3 we have the 2 picks pretty close together so take this latest sim I just did for example. Who you taking at 69 and hoping falls to 77. Another thing I really like about this one is it not only shows team need but adjusts for what they've already drafted.

There's obviously a handful of WRs to choose from. But there's 3 teams in between with that as their need. So do we risk missing out on the 1 we value most?

I'm fine with Membou if the team judges he can make the switch to LT comfortably and I'm fine with Campbell, even if he does turn out to be a LG long term because it would mean we've upgraded from him at LT which I view as a win-win.

It does seem like Campbell grades higher in front offices and the professional punditry than he does the amateur internet sleuths who don't have access to his coaching staff, teammates and the player himself. Character, intelligence and leadership have to be accounted for in any player evaluation. If the Patriots pick Campbell over Membou, there has to be a reason for that whether it's Campbell's character or concerns over Membou making the switch. Of course, the same applies in reverse.

Here's one of the better explanations in terms of drafting for talent v drafting for need;

“If you have multiple players in the same grade category, then you should take the player at the biggest need or take the player where there is the least amount of depth to fill that spot later in the draft, A properly set up draft board will easily help you figure this out. But you should never dip a grade level below for a player of need as this doesn’t make your team better.

“You spend all year evaluating prospects and then properly setting up your draft board, so you must let your draft board speak to you. If you start moving things around to fit needs, all you are doing is putting a body at a position of need and hoping.

“And hope is not a strategy.”

In that scenario it's pretty clear you take the WR at 69 because they are at the top of your board. However, if you have Trapilo in the same grading range as Noel, Bech and Royals, you make the determination as to whether you need a WR or RT most and how the rest of the draft looks at both positions. If you have Trapilo a step below the WRs, then take the WR.

How in the world was Polk in the same grade category as Fiske and Dejean?

He wasn't. I recall most had Javon Baker ahead of Polk but this still shows he was not any where close to Fiske. Dejean was 19 BTW

They should let the Patsfans draft board run the draft for just one year to see how we do. Patsfans draft board regulars only though.
We would do well. Felger and Mazz throw a black marker at draft magazines and did better last year than Wolf and Groh.

As much as I liked Ladd I knew we were desperate for a LT then and it's not like the class then was all that great either. I liked Kingsley and Kiran. Neither have amounted to much yet. Patrick Paul and Rosengarten were showing some promise as I recall.

I really wanted Fiske or Cooper with that pick. Wasn't a fan of Polk but hoped I was wrong at the time
I liked Fiske a lot too. As Wolf admitted they were too focused on need last year.
